Yes, it’s about the music, and yes, it’s about politics, but it’s also about much more than that.

It’s about a love for the morbid, the macabre, and the taboo. Much of goth music and gothic literature explores darker themes, so if you’re uncomfortable with that, you probably won’t connect with most gothic art.

It’s also about fashion and makeup. It’s about going against the norm and rejecting traditional beauty standards. Even if that’s not the most important part of the subculture, when you strongly identify with a community, you naturally begin to express that identity outwardly. As your worldview expands and solidifies, the way you present yourself often reflects that.

Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.
