“Nu-uh.” You cross your arms (well, as much as the anesthesia lets you), lips wobbling into a pout. “You’d never date me. You’re too sparkly. You’re like a sparkly piece of muscle. You’d want someone better.”

Abby’s grin softens, though his eyes are shining. He leans closer, brushing his thumb over your warm cheek. “Babe. It’s me. I already chose you. A hundred times over. I’m not lying, I promise.”

He catches your hand before you can slap it to your forehead in despair. His grip is firm and grounding. “I wouldn’t want anyone else.”

You blink rapidly, tears pooling. “Wait… seriously? You’re not lying? Because if you’re lying, that’s— that’s cruel. You’re too beautiful to lie.”

Romance presses your knuckles to his lips, dead serious despite your gauze-filled cheeks. “More than breath itself.”

You burst into ugly sobs, half from anesthesia, half from overwhelming emotion. Romance strokes your hair, absolutely glowing at your reaction, whispering: “Even in this haze, your heart still calls to mine.” Later, he recites the entire scene back to you like it was Shakespearean theater.

BABY

When you’re wheeled out of the room, loopy, your cheeks puffed with gauze and your eyes glazed, Baby is already grinning like the devil in his chair. He’s been waiting for this moment.

Your teary eyes widen, and you turn your head toward the little mirror on the side table. You squint hard at your reflection. “…Huh? I look like that, too…”

Baby LOSES IT. He doubles over, laughing so hard the nurse has to shush him. But you’re still staring at the mirror in shock. “Wait—so your girlfriend looks like me?!”

He wipes his eyes, grinning like the menace he is, and leans close. “That’s because you are my girlfriend, dummy.”

You blink at him in utter confusion. “…Huh?”

“You’re my girlfriend. Already. Like… we’ve been together. For real.”

The realization slams into you, and your jaw drops. “THAT’S SO MEAN! Why would you trick me like that?!” Your little voice cracks as you try to smack his arm with your weak, wobbly hand.

Unfortunately for you, your balance is so off that you hit the air next to Baby which makes you almost fall onto the floor.
