Final Project: Creative Manifesto

I struggled with finding just one thing that not only displayed the why I do things but also displayed my what, and who, and how I do things. So I picked three photos that came out of a series of photos taken on a trip with my family to Rome.

These four words are things that I think about and reflect on every single time I take a photo, every time I post one. Why am I taking this? I am taking this to display Gods love, I am showing the beauty that he has made and the beauty he created for us in this world. Who am I taking pictures of/ for? I often take photos of my friends and family, you can often find them as the subject of my photos. They are the most important thing to me, besides christ, and through my pictures I want to capture the memories with them, the fun that we have together. What I take photos of, what am I feeling as I take these? I find peace through taking pictures, it is my opportunity to take a break from the craziness of the world. My photography is almost like a safe haven for me, its how I display my emotions and where I feel in my life.

Class discussion

Comparison is one thing that we fall into day, to day. We often compare what we are going through, the way we do things, the way we look, the way we dress to the way that others do. In class we discussed the downfalls of comparison. We can often sink into this pit and we can get lost in that. But it is important to know that our journey is not there, we cannot compare the way that people do things, they do the process.

We are unique, God made us each one of a kind. So the way that we do things, the way that we grow, is dependent on ourselves and not on the work of others. When we begin to think about and reflect on how others do things. When we begin to do this we begin to lose ourselves and what we are doing,

Week 15 Assigned Readings & Videos

I’m having a hard time shifting back from my break mindset back to school mindset. How about you? I know its a challenge, but I’m excited to share this last week of course content for you to consider in our semester long dialogue about what it means to be an artist of faith in our 2020 world.

Please take some time before Wednesday to:

1.) Read “Art as a 21st Century Calling” PDF. It is available on moodle. This is another chapter from the book “Art & Soul: Signposts for Christians in the Arts”.

2.) Watch The Art Assignment video “Love the Art, Hate the Artist”. It is linked here on youtube and should also be watchable above.

3.) For an artist’s perspective, rather than a written interview, I’d love for you to check out episode 2 of the series “Inside Pixar” available streaming on Disney+. This episode is called “Inspired: Deanna Marsigliese, The Art of the Pivot”. This is a short video of an artist who works at Pixar talking about her creative process. If you do not have access to Disney+, you can sign up for a free trail and cancel it within a particular time period to avoid being charged. If this is too complicated for you to access, please skip this part of the week’s content. However, I think this video adds some great notes to our conversation and hope you are able to check it out!

We will meet via zoom for our discussion this week during our regular scheduled class time on Wednesday starting at 1:15pm. The zoom information will be posted to moodle shortly.

Art has the power to tell a story, to invoke an emotion. The way that these art pieces are made and how the stories are told change over time. I think that when looking at an art piece there can be many different stories that can be told, I think that there are many pieces that can make you feel something, can make you see something that reflects what you are needing to see what you are needing to hear. Through this, I think that the artist is also telling a story through the art process, through the emotions that they are feeling, through why they are making it. I think that art is such a powerful thing and it can tell those stories and to make us feel a certain way, a way that can help us or a way that can tell a story. We are able to see this and learn this through the reading “Art as a 21st Century,” where it discusses the importance of these stories and how people look for those stories, to find comfort in, to relax to much like we can find in the Bible.

Has an artwork ever deepened your understanding about something?

This question pulls me back to a time where I watched my best friend dance on stage during chapel, through this dance she shared her testimony. As I watched her perform this dance I began to understand her more, it allowed me to see what she is going through, and it allowed me to experience the pain that she has endured throughout her life.

I believe that this effect can also be felt through other art pieces as well. One of the biggest ones that I have experienced was through photos. Through photography of experiences and places, through people's lives and what they have gone through. I think that through these pieces it allows us to connect what others are going through and allow us to put ourselves there. It opens our eyes to things we never saw before and it makes us feel a sort of way.

Having art in our lives is so important, it allows us to hear things that some people find hard to say out loud, it allows us to connect with them and grow with them and I think that that is so beautiful and an amazing thing to think about. The power of art can connect us to those around us.

Happy Thanksgiving aka Week 14

Happy Thanksgiving!!

While we will not be meeting this week for our class to celebrate thanksgiving.

However, please continue to post your thoughts about the question of the week and take some time during this break to read the following pdfs:

1.) Read “Let the Games Begin” by Stephanie Sabo. There is a pdf version of the physical printed copy I had available for you in class last week available on moodle for you to read. This was printed as an exhibition essay, part of the printed exhibition catalogue that was created in conjunction with my 2018 solo exhibition “Love is an Action Word” at Duke Art Gallery on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. Please read this short text as another artist perspective on what it looks like, practically, to be an artist of faith in our time.

2.) “Art as a Proper Job” PDF. This is available to download on moodle.

Take some time to consider this information in light of the larger conversation we have been having this semester about what it means to be creatives of faith. Post a written reflection of your own thoughts and conclusions about all of this content onto your blogs.

This can be a posted together with next week’s content or posted on its own. Either way, this info should be posted to your blogs no later than Wednesday, December 2nd to prepare for our zoom class discussion during our regular scheduled class time.

First off, how cool is it that we have an opportunity to read through an article made about our professor and to read about the passion that she has for the artwork that she makes and the time that she puts into that process. I think that is so special and cool for us to not only read about it but also see that passion throughout our time in class.

While reading through this article, “Love is an action word,” the biggest thing that stood out to me was the word fun. AS artists i think that this is one of the biggest things that we should have, much like anything we do in life with any job. We need to find that aspect of fun and that passion for the process in what we make. I think that that is so important, do you love what you do, do you find fun in it? I think that once you begin to lose that aspect of fun, that aspect of enjoyment then you begin to just go through the motions.. However i think that when you have fun, when you have that joy in what you make and in what you do then your artwork will expand and excel!

Has an artwork ever changed your mind about something?

I am sure I have looked at an artwork or an art piece in my life that has certainly changed my mind about something. Although it is hard for me to pinpoint a certain time where this did happen. However, I do believe that there is a possibility that artwork can change our perspective, it can change the way we see the world, it can show us things that we never saw before, or things that we never thought to experience.

Though there are many different forms of art that can bring this experience, the one that I have felt it with the most was through photography. I believe that photography has the ability to transport you to places that you have never been, it has the ability to show you things you have never seen before and I think that because of that there are things that it can change your mind about. It can change the way that you feel about something.

Class discussion

Throughout this week, within our reading, question of the week, and class discussion we discussed the concept of what makes art beautiful? This question is one that I feel like is often asked by artists. How can we make our art beautiful and pleasing to others. I found that many of my classmates had the same opinion as myself, “who are we to judge and who are we to call an art piece not beautiful?”

I found that many of us stuck with the thought that we are not god, we are not the ones that make these decisions, what are we to say that someone's handiwork, someones and to say something like that?

As, christians we are called to love one another, and I think that through that we are meant to build others up, it is something that someone took time on, and something that someone cherishes. I think that rather than us making that choice or that opinion we need to think about the effect, think about the mark that it leaves, and the artist's statement and the why behind what they made.

ART MUST BE BEAUTIFUL

This idea, this phrase is one that we say to ourselves as artist time and time again. In the video, titles art must be beautiful, it opens up with a woman chatting the phrase “art must be beautiful, an artist must be beautiful.” Looking at this idea and hearing this be said brings me sadness, why is it that we often get so caught up in the idea that everything we do everything we present must be beautiful and pleasing for others. Why does this idea that what we make MUST be beautiful? These questions are ones that often fill my head and drag me down. I will often look at something, something I do, where, take pictures of, etc etc, and I will think wow this is beautiful. But the moment someone points out a flaw to me in that, it is the only thing my eyes see, that something no longer becomes beautiful to me. Why is it that we as humans wish to please those around us so much? We tend to get so caught up and mixed up in the chaos and rabbit hole of pleasing those around us that we often forget the most important thing. Is what we are doing beautiful to us? Is it beautiful and honoring to God? Those are the thoughts we should be thinking about, not what is beautiful to those around us. This points to another comment that was made in the video “beauty is objective,” It is! It is something that everyone will have a different perspective and opinion on so what can we do with that knowledge? I think it is just further proof that rather than getting stuck in the rabbit hole of trying to please others we must go in and ask ourselves those two questions: Is what we are doing beautiful to us? Is it beautiful and honoring to God?

Does a work of art need to be beautiful? Why or Why not?

Does a work of art need to be beautiful? Well I think that it all depends on who is creating the art piece. When I take photos, I look for things that I like, what I think is beautiful and what honors and pleases the Lord.

With this question, another question comes to mind, Who and I to judge what is beautiful and what isn't? Is that not God's job to decide. IN the bible it says, anything that is honoring and pleasing to the Lord is beautiful. With that, I believe that anything that pleases and honors the lord is beautiful. Anything that displays the beauty in God's artwork.

Think of an example of an artwork you consider to be good. What made it good?

One piece of artwork that comes to mind when i look at this question is a collection that my uncle made for me. These pieces were beautiful and depicted these cats that he would paint in a gorgeous and beautiful way. However, it wasn't the art piece that made it beautiful in my eyes, even though it was a beautiful piece, it was the heart and the mindset behind it! My uncle was one that I never really met, I never had a chance to spend time with him, but how we did communicate was through these. He would send these to me almost once every year and it felt like christmas every time I got one. These pieces were beautiful because it showed his love and care for me through these pieces without words. For me, that's what made these pieces beautiful and what made these pieces good to me.

Spiritual Habits

This week, I want you to take some time reading the remaining chapters of the Emerge text which loosely group around the idea of the soul and some spiritual habits to answers the question of how you might live life as a creative.

Please do the following before Wednesday:

1.) Read Emerge (truth) pages 66-72

2.) Read Emerge (usefulness) pages 117-125

3.) Read Emerge (part 3) page 127 to the end of the book

4.) Take a 20-30 minute walk. Use this exercise as an excuse to be present to yourself and the world around you. Pay attention. Be open. Recharge. No written assignment is necessary, but if there is anything of note that you notice or experience during your walk, feel free to write about it on your blogs.

This is an exhibition view of a show called “Abacus” that is on view in New York right now by artist Thomas Scheibitz. From the gallery press release:

“Over the past two decades, Thomas Scheibitz has developed his own conceptual language that bridges the realms of figuration and abstraction, at times dissolving them entirely. By using language and forms that suggest numerous meanings, Scheibitz challenges the viewer to consider multiple perspectives.

From an ancient counting device, the uppermost division of a column in architecture, a software for banking systems, a research consortium, to a cult object, Abacus is a word with many different definitions and uses. Beginning with a vocabulary with multiple perspectives, Scheibitz uses this as a parallel to his painting and sculpture practice. Drawing from classical painting and architecture, the contemporary urban landscape, and popular culture, Scheibitz deconstructs and recombines signs, images, shapes, and architectural fragments in ways that question traditional contexts and interpretations.”

Romans 12:2B states “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

I found this chapter so interesting, it focused on the way we acted, the way that we behave, how we speak towards others, how we interact with others. This is something that I am constantly thinking about or focusing on, it's hard for me not to. I tend to think about how I act, how I treat others. How I treat others is always at the forefront of my mind. But how do we bring that into art? Well our art tells a story, it lets off this feeling and this experience. I strongly believe that what we look at and what art we observe has the power to control our emotions and have us feel a certain way. Now I want to ask how this works as an artist and as a christ follower? I think that it's important more for the artist to think about the emotions that they are invoking or the why behind what they do, and what form of art they are making, hopefully that makes sense. I think that it is such a tricky question and it has so many different answers and so many different possible ideas depending on the person.

Question of the Week:

How can art be made “to the glory of God”? What does that look like? What doesn’t it look like?

How can art be made “to the glory of God”? What does that look like? What doesn’t it look like? I truthfully believe that it is all behind the intention of a person that the art work is being made for the glory of God. Which is easier said than done, I understand that however i think that god gives each of us talents, and it's what we use those talents for that I believe gives God that Glory. I think that when we use the gifts god gave to us in an unselfish way, one that only benefits us, rather than God. I don't know, it's such a tricky question, with so many possible answers. I think that overall I genuinely believe that it is all behind the artist's intent.

Rules, they are something that we live by. Whether its rules that we give ourselves, rules that other people give to us, or rules that we don't know where they came from we just have to follow. Right now, more so than ever we are faced with so many rules, how to interact, how to work, what to wear, how close to be with people, no touching, and so on and so forth. We are living in a rule filled society. So it was rather refreshing to see these rules that will help us with our college journey and how to best learn because it is something that is at the forefront of our lives right now, it is not something that we need to follow but it is one that we can choose to follow. This comes from the Immaculate Heart College Art Department Rules. These rules are rules that I have used without noticing or realizing. One of the rules that stuck out the most to me was rule number 9.

These past couple weeks, months, heck even this year has been one that has been so hard to find joy and to be happy. So when looking at this rule it is reminding us to be happy whenever we can amangage it. I would even go as far as to say find time, schedule time where you can recenter yourself, spend time with christ, take a break, and take a breath. Find joy in those moments where everything else is so difficult and hard. I think that that is something so important and so desperately needed for me and for many people this year. TAKE TIME TO BE HAPPY!

How should art be used in the church? What should that look like? What shouldn’t that look like?

In what ways does God “renew” our minds? This is a hard question for me to answer. For as long as I could remember, I have always been a christian, I grew up in the church with my dad as my pastor. Now this is great and I will never be sad about the way I was raised however when I started growing up and hearing all these stories about how people transformed and changed after accepting christ I was always sad that I never had that experience. Now that I can look back at my life, I have realized that everyone's journey and experience with christ is different, and that is okay. With that there was a shift in my life and my walk with faith and that was when I was truly able to explore and grow in my faith without my parents, and without my family helping me. I was able to make it my own and in doing so I have grown closer, and deeper with christ.

How should art be used in the church? What should that look like? What shouldn’t that look like? I think that this question is a tricky one. On one hand, God created the practice of art and I truly believe that there are people that were given this gift. On the other hand I believe that there is a line between creating art in the honor and glory to God and creating these idols. Learning and balancing these things are very difficult and important when bringing these pieces into a church. I think that the way that my church does this is really great, for one service every year they have someone come and paint an art piece, each of these pieces that they have made have depicted and tell the story of christ and as they are doing this there is a story being told through it, once he is done this art piece is put up around the chapel. So when you walk in at first glance you wouldn't see it, but once you look up at the walls you then see them. I think that this idea is so important, because this artwork is still being honored and displayed, all the while honoring christ through those pieces but they are not distracting from the messages or the true reason we are there. I think that once this artwork becomes distracting, and takes away the importance of worshiping Christ, that is when it should not be used in the church.

WEEK 10 - CLASS DISCUSSION:

In art there are many times where we can learn. One of which, which is one that I learn from more, is through learning from others. I like to learn from their process and learn from the way that they attack their pieces. In our class this is one of the quotes that stuck out to me the most was when we said “you can learn from others and the way that they address situations, the way that they address their art.” I think that this is such a powerful and important thing to do as an artist, learn from and reflect on those who know more than I do. Along with that I believe that it's important for us to have these conversations and learn from others ideas and opinions and reflect on them.

When thinking about what it is to be an artist I feel like there are many characteristics that come when looking at the artist, the art process, or the art piece. From our reading this week we went through the idea, mastering, messiness, and habit, through these four there was one that really stuck out to me, and one that I hope to grow in. That is the idea of messiness.

Messiness is one thing that I cannot stand, I like to have everything in order and a certain place, so when my life is crazy, my area tends to become messy. Which I am not going to lie, drives me even more crazy. But this idea and this practice tend to reflect this example and this idea into my artwork. I tend to be very focused on those details making everything in place, the editing is done and done well, and I tend to post it. When my life is crazy, and when the area around me is messy, I tend to feel like my practice is as well, I do not edit and I tend not to post it or share it.

In this chapter it really hones in on the idea of messiness. I feel like through this chapter it really focused on the importance of not giving up when it gets messy but to work with the messiness. Continue to grow, continue to persevere. In this chapter Perni retells the story of the dot, in this story the teacher is encouraging a student to paint, to explore, to try and not give up. The teacher tells her student “just make a mark and see where it takes you.” I think that this quote is so important, I could take one photo and it not be my favorite but I need to continue to shoot, to continue to grow through the mess and eventually it won't be messy anymore.

How is the art you make different than the art you like to look at or engage with as a viewer?

Has reading the Bible ever provided you guidance about looking at, thinking about or making art?

How is the art you make different than the art you like to look at or engage with as a viewer?

Personally, I think that the art that I look at is very similar to the art that I look at and observe is very similar to my own personal art work. How I go about my personal practice is I like to be natural, but I also like to reference other peoples art work. It allows me to learn more in how to pose people as well as how to edit people. I love to look into other peoples art and into other peoples art practice in see how far they have come and it allows me to aspire to be like them, not like them but to go from where they were at the beginning to where they are now. I aspire to grow up to be like them.

Class Discussion

What is it like to be an artist? Oftentimes we go to the idea of a struggling artist, or a torchered artist. Those stereotypes can affect someone so much more than we can ever imagine. It creates so much of a mental stress on someone to have these expectations and these thoughts and ideas made up about them.

Mental health is something that is so important to so many people, and it's something that is often used and abused. It is something that I have noticed more from artists, because they get placed in this box that you have to be struggling, you have to be torchered in order to succeed. This thought and this idea is something that makes me so sad and it's this idea and its this stereotype that I pray we oneday grow out of it.
