after months of mulling on it, I am Absolutely Certain that not only is spamton textually trans, but he was created Specifically to be in conversation with the trans representation in undertale

if i could reblog this 1000 times i would. i need people to know spamton is canonically trans I'm serious. you cannot take trans spamton away from us — he is nbtm trans you can’t deny this much coding without being purposefully ignorant. especially given the fact the addisons CANONICALLY USE THEY/THEM. that isn’t even trans subtext that’s trans fact

 i fucking love how casually Toby puts so many trans and nonbinary characters in his games. including characters using it/its. i don't think i realized just how groundbreaking Undertale was in this regard because i was young and hadn’t realized i was Not Cis, but it having multiple nonbinary characters plus a trans man and two trans women is still incredibly rare now

toby is a genius for making spamton trans I'm ngl. lmao i love the fact that so many dudebros who love spamton have no idea he’s a trans guy. by which i mean i wish they would know and accept that fact and still love him but lbr a lot of them would not so

i feel dumb for not realizing he’s trans before ch3 honestly. like it makes so much sense even just considering his many connections and parallels to mettaton. and of course a lot of cis ppl argue that none of this is ‘proof’ of anything but if they think toby fox is unintentionally putting in this. much trans subtext into that many characters they are 1000% coping at this point

i only noticed the Addisons use they/them on my last Snowgrave playthrough a few months back. Noelle has this line referring to the Pink Addison, after she attacks them and traps them in the Freeze Ring while under a trance, and the screen goes black:

and considering Spamton says “once I was like them” i was immediately like. wait. spamton is canonically trans? and in the exact same way Mettaton is (enby/agender-to-male)? that makes so much sense and HOW have more people not already been pointing this out?? it’s not like it’s hidden, that moment happens on every Snowgrave playthrough — it’s just overlooked by the majority of the fandom and it shouldn’t be. i myself somehow missed the implications when i saw it the first couple times. and then i felt like my mind was blown when i first connected that with the mannequin. like, that blue dress is only worn by 2 people in Undertale, both textually trans, and Toby decided to put that on Spamton’s mannequin and add the dialogue about Spamton squirming and not fitting in it. it’s genius honestly.

the dress is literally exclusively associated with trans characters, in both Undertale and Deltarune. obviously there’s Mettaton and the lioness in Undertale, and in Deltarune there’s Kris, who is explicitly nonbinary, being the only character able to equip it, although Ralsei will call the dress “cute” if you try to put it on them, in a nod to them being transfem but not ready to confront it yet; there’s Spamton, obviously; and now this has been even further proven through Pink/Mad Mew Mew in ch5, who, as pointed out in the post, is canonically a trans woman like Mettaton is a trans man.

as this post points out, you can try to give the Spamton mannequin with the dress to Pink/Mad Mew Mew, and the dialogue will say the exact same thing it did when you try to put Spamton in it — that it “doesn’t fit.” this is significant, as it’s the only armor you can attempt to give her, meaning it was specifically done to draw a parallel to Spamton’s dialogue. it represents both of their pretransition selves (Mew Mew through it being an unmovable, unchangeable dummy, as she was before actually bonding with her body, & Spamton through it being an unremarkable plain white Addison forced into feminine clothing he had no choice in), as well as it simply being a dummy/object, something both of them hate being.

the Mad Mew Mew/Spamton parallels in general were also greatly expanded on and called attention to in ch5 (and of course, both of these characters also parallel Kris & their relationship with the player); Pink directly invokes Spamton multiple times by accusing the Fun Gang of wanting to steal her body like a “little grubby puppet gremlin” (even though she did the exact same thing herself, lol), green strings are used to show the struggle between the Darkner and the ghost controlling her, and Mad Mew Mew realizes in the end that she was wrong for trying to control her body, literally saying that she was “puppeting” her. the rest of this dialogue also seems like a parallel to Spamton’s feelings on NEO.

Watching the trailer last night sent me absolutely buzzing because 1. it's Larian. I cannot understate how badly I need to disappear into one of their worlds again and 2. as I sat there I thought "someone involved in this has seen The Wickerman about two dozen times". So, I thought I'd spread a little folk horror cheer to tide us all over until we get more info about the game.

The Wickerman (1973) dir. Robin Hardy This movie is about a cult that you kind of want to join. You’re so bought in, it seems so cool, but by the end [SPOILERS] when the flames are licking up the wicker man and Howie is screaming and crying out to God and the goat is bleating and the chickens are shrieking you have to take a step back and go “oh shit, maybe that was…bad actually.” Wickerman walked so Midsommar could run.

2. The Wickerman (2006) dir. Neil LaBute The 1973 version's inferior but much funnier cousin. This Nic Cage remake is so stupid and so fun and you can actually watch it over and over because Cage chewing the scenery to a rotten pulp makes his eventual death go down a little easier. 

3. Midsommar (2019) dir. Ari Aster The obvious choice to get hype for a game with flower crowns and horrible burning deaths. An opiated Swedish lullaby where the sun never sets and the yonic energy never ceases. The movie that made a whole generation of women realize they're susceptible to cults.

4. Men (2022) dir. Alex Garland A flick about that grieving urge to go hide away alone in the countryside and why you SHOULDN'T do that. The landscape is lush and beautiful, the central cabin cozy and secluded, the town quiet and full of....men? What starts as a weird encounter with the cabin's owner ends with protagonist Harper arming herself against an army of nude men all wearing the same face.

5. It Follows (2014) dir. David Robert Mitchell An early Maika Monroe (think Longlegs) entry that isn't really folk horror but does embody some of my favorite folk horror tropes i.e. a shapeshifting antagonist with unclear motives and weird, sort of uncomfortable sex.

6. Woodshock (2017) dir. Kate and Laura Mulleavy Kirsten Dunst goes crazy with grief (and off a powerful, hallucinogenic strain of weed) and takes her death wish to the local woods where the trees speak and murder starts to ring in the undergrowth.

7. Enys Men (2022) dir. Mark Jenkin Another Woman Alone in the Wilderness movie but this one with an ornithological twist. The unnamed Volunteer becomes obsessed with a strange flower that unfurls into a Cornish folktale about past and future selves and places set against a backdrop of creeping, coastal lichen.

8. Fréwaka (2024) dir. Aislinn Clarke Part Irish folktale, part doomed sapphic romance, Gaeilge-language movie Fréwaka is a dizzying depiction of epigenetics and the way female trauma can soak into the very roots of a place. So good my friend and I bought horseshoe necklaces immediately after we watched.
