agreed that it shouldn't, but in comics fandom especially, a/b vs b/a does feel like a different ship sometimes. jaytim and timjay should be the same ship regardless of who tops, but a lot of the fandom doesn't actually read comics so they just use the other character as a generic domtop for whoever is their favourite (jason is a bad boy with a heart of gold, tim is a cold and domineering type a, or some other romance genre variant). same for jaydick and dickjay. so clarifying which t/b you prefer actually is signalling a different ship with a completely different dynamic and characterisation in certain shipping spaces. and the more these groups separate (from each other and the actual comic-reading community) the more divergent they become

i actually dont agree that its extra prevalent in comic spaces or that its necessarily an issue driven by a lack of comic reading. partially because the trend of using a/b vs b/a in ships to denote who tops and bottoms started in eastern fandom cultures and then spread to western spaces. and partially because i know people who read comics who still fall into the pitfalls of kind of flattening out or changing characterization for their ships to make them fit into the archetypes they personally enjoy

the divide in how a/b and b/a come to be two different ships is about how people will use their preference as a hard rule, instead of admitting that characters can be viewed through different lenses and still be correct. like i do agree that people are using it to signal their preferred dynamic between the characters but i dont agree that its an issue between comic readers and non-comic readers Specifically

the problem isnt "this person doesnt read comics so theyre just making them whatever archetype they want" (though that absolutely does happen, even with comics readers). but no, the real issue stems from the viewpoint of "im right that this character is the top, and people who say differently are wrong" as if you cant read into a character in multiple ways. ill use tim as an example, because there are two separate camps that seem to either only view tim as a calculating seductress or as a poor little uwu with little to no in between. where the truth of the matter lays that tim can be calculating but tim can also be led. and you can look into any character trait and use it as a reason to have him be either a top or a bottom. like i know people who say "oh well tim is a control freak so of course he would be like that in bed too and need to be in control and calling the shots and in charge so he HAS to top and/or dom" meanwhile personally i see tims control issues and see someone who needs that control wrested away from him in bed so he can truly relax. who's right? is he a top? is he a bottom? does he prefer domming or does he like subbing? or maybe its neither and hes out there having super vanilla sex! the beauty in fandom is that no one is right!! you can dig into his character truthfully in any number of ways. so the issue isnt "i dont like seeing a/b because i prefer b as a dom", its buying so far into your own opinion that a character is a top or a bottom that you start to see the opposite as "out of character" which is where the fights between a/b and b/a ships start
