Painter's Palette Inscribed with the Name of Amenhotep III New Kingdom, Dynasty 18 ca. 1390β1352 B.C.
This painter's palette was carved from a single piece of ivory. Six oval wells contain cakes of pigments including blue, green, brown (?), yellow, red, and black. The oval cartouche at one end encircles the throne name of Amenhotep III, Nebmaatre, and the epithet "beloved of Re."
Amenhotep III (lit.β'"Amun is satisfied"'), also known as Amenhotep the Magnificent or Amenhotep the Great and Hellenized as Amenophis III, was the ninth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty. According to different authors following the "Low Chronology", he ruled Ancient Egypt from June 1386 to 1349 BC, or from June 1388 BC to December 1351 BC/1350 BC, after his father Thutmose IV died. Amenhotep was Thutmose's son by a minor wife, Mutemwiya.
His reign marked a time of exceptional prosperity and grandeur, during which Egypt reached the height of its artistic and international influence, making him one of ancient Egypt's greatest pharaohs. He is also one of the few pharaohs worshipped as a deity during his lifetime.

The 2,400-Year-Old 'Skeleton Mosaic'
The Skeleton Mosaic, dating to the late Roman period around the 3rd century AD, portrays symbolic scenes reflecting life and mortality.
Turkish archaeologists discovered the ancient mosaic in the remains of a house from the 3rd century that features a skeleton enjoying a large loaf of bread and pitcher of wine. It was found in 2012 in Turkeyβs southernmost state, Hatay Province, in the provincial capital of Antakya, (Antioch in antiquity) during construction of a cable car system.
Dating back to the late Roman period (around the 3rd century AD), this mosaic is divided into three panels that offer a rare, symbolic reflection on life, urgency, and mortality.
The central scene features a reclining skeleton with a pitcher of wine and bread, inscribed in ancient Greek with the word βΞΞ₯ΦΑΞΞ£Ξ₯ΞΞΞ£β (βBe cheerful, enjoy your lifeβ)βa bold message that subverts typical portrayals of death. Another panel shows a man rushing to dinner, losing a shoe in his haste, with the caption β΀ΑΞΞ§ΞΞΞΞ ΞΞΞ£-ΞΞΞΞΞ‘ΞΞ£β (βHe is in a hurry to get dinner because heβs nearly out of timeβ), reminding viewers of the fleeting nature of time. The final, partially preserved panel shows a servant preparing a bathβhighlighting the social importance of bathing in Greco-Roman life.
Scholars continue to debate its meaning: some see it as a celebration of lifeβs pleasures, others as a subtle warning against excess. Either way, itβs a vivid window into the philosophies of one of antiquityβs most vibrant cultures.
On display at the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Turkey.

Such a quaint little museum and it fills me with joy how much pride they take in Mary Anning and her work.
Medieval Reliquary in the Shape of a Three-Legged Fish, from Germany, c.900-1350 CE: this artifact was created as a vessel for the relics of Mary Magdalene
This strange-looking vessel is usually described as a "fish with legs," but some sources refer to it as a "flea-like insect" instead.
The body dates back to the 10th century CE, but the legs were added a few centuries later, likely during the 14th century. The vessel itself was carved from rock crystal (i.e. quartz) while the head, legs, and frame are all made from gilded silver.
As this book describes:
Around 1400, a grotesque animal was created whose rock crystal body, with a simple head and three stilt-like legs, encloses relics of Mary Magdalene in a drilled cylinder.
Apparently, a rock crystal container dating to the 10th century β according to Gerard Lemmens, βan oriental perfume bottle in the shape of a fish," or, according to Henk van Os, specifically one of the coveted Fatimid flacons β was reworked. It appears that the fins of the flacon were ground down slightly on the sides to allow the two twisted metal cords of the holder to fit more closely along the back and belly.
This reliquary was originally commissioned for the nuns of St. Vitus Church, located in Emmerich am Rhein, Germany, where it was meant to serve as a display case for the alleged relics of Mary Magdalene. It was later moved to the nearby Church of St. Martin, which is where it's currently housed.
The vessel contains a piece of parchment that may be wrapped around a human bone (or bone fragment), but the exact nature of that relic remains unclear.
