serendipity

everyone is denying shane his ginger ale, which is basically the only thing he ever wants or tries to ask for. at the restaurant with his parents, they don't have it and he's forced to settle for water. meanwhile his parents are pressuring him to drink wine and go to wimbledon with a swedish princess, which shane does not want and doesn't have time for.

with hayden at the aquarium, ginger ale is available but the supply is contingent on keeping hayden's wife happy, and apparently hayden's wife's happiness is contingent on shane going on a date with her (female) yoga teacher friend.

[in ep2, shane says his mom told him to bring wine to the team's stanley cup watch party after hayden's wife asks "what am i supposed to do with this?" which mmmm i have a reading for but it contains spoilers...]

at the club in montreal, the bartender does have ginger ale but he's SO judgy about shane ordering it that shane orders something else rather than insist on it, even as he says "shane hollander can have whatever he wants here" as suggestively as possible. this makes me crazy because ginger ale isn't just about sexuality anymore -- ginger ale is ilya. there isn't just baggage for shane tied to being a gay pro hockey player, but even plausibly gay montreal metros fans who give him elevator eyes and won't let him pay for drinks are not going to be chill about him secretly fucking their rival team's captain.

and then of course at ilya's house, ilya not only keeps ginger ale on hand specifically for shane, but checks to make sure it's the right temperature. everything shane is going through to get a sip of some fucking ginger ale and ilya is worried it might be too warm and he won't like it.
