For as much as they tell you about Stop Drop and Roll as a kid, I really expected to be on fire more times in my life.
All jokes aside, the real reason kids get drilled on âstop drop and rollâ so aggressively is because it needs to be a reflex. Sure, getting set on fire is unlikely, but if DOES happen, you will be terrified and in a lot of pain, and youâll need to handle it FAST. The default response your brain will have to that is the standard monkey brain instinctive reaction to being terrified and in pain - get the fuck away from the danger. Which is the worst possible response to being on fire, because panicking and trying to run will just fan the flames and make it much worse. But if youâve had âstop drop and rollâ beaten into your head a thousand times all your life, thereâs a good chance that in that initial moment of âoh fuck Iâm on fireâ, instead of panicking, your brain will jump straight to the trained response of âhit the ground and smother the flamesâ.
And the fact that itâs NOT a common threat is why we need to drill it so hard in the first place - instictive reactions to pain/danger are usually the correct response! Itâs survival instincts! Like, if you get a bad cut, your first reaction will be to slap a hand on it and keeo it there, because âapply pressure to bleeding woundâ is the correct response! But being set on fire just doesnât happen enough to be a serious concern as a species, so the instinctive reaction to that happening will actually cause horrific burns and/or death, because we donât really need a naturally programmed in response for such a rare problem.
But it does still happen sometimes, and the correct reaction is very simple, so basically programming kids to stop drop and roll if on fire is easy, harmless, and probably saves a fair amount of lives.

Itâs really irritating to me whenever I see videos of other severely disabled people saying itâs hard to wash their hair because of their illnesses and people suggest âjustâ cutting it off. As if hair isnât a huge part of peoplesâ identity a lot of times, if not self expression. And the misconception that shorter hair means it wonât be as bad for someone with severe myalgic encephalomyelitis is just incomprehensible to me.
If theyâre not suggesting something, believing itâs a one size fits all solution (bed hair washing set ups, shampoo caps) their solution is to just⌠get rid of a part of our identity to suddenly âmake it easierâ. Long hair isnât the issue when every movement and sensory input is punishing. Making it easier isnât always the point. Sometimes the point is just sharing âthis is what I go through because of my disability, something you might not think of if youâre not disabled/donât have my disabilityâ. Itâs no different than any other person showing a day in their life or how they care for their hair. Itâs just not conventional for you to see people still struggle with all the added help.
Why would your first suggestion be to remove another part of myself? Why would a positive resolve to you be for my friends and people like me to change more of who we are just because we are simply sharing something that will affect us regardless of the length of hair we have? We will always struggle with personal care tasks/ADLs but that doesnât mean weâre looking to make it the easiest way if it means losing more and more of ourselves. Sometimes even with a struggle it is the easiest without giving up the final fight with something. Respect that.
AHAH found my post before my blog was nuked. Iâm never shutting up. I was made to haunt to the internet.
I wanted to also say that even if it is more work, youâre allowed to want to keep that effort as long as possible. Youâre allowed to want to be âextraâ in your care. Youâre allowed to want to feel dolled up and pretty. You donât have to give in to people telling you to either thin or cut your hair if YOU donât want to. You are allowed to have it as you are, even if you have rapunzel length hair and it technically âWOULDâ be easier, youâre not wrong for wanting to keep that part of yourself.
MUAH.
