Somehow, Reg was never prepared for Lore to act soft. At all. It was easy to forget that he was a parent, too, until he did something like that. He watched curiously as Lore reached out to Nik, wondering what his son would do.

Nik slowly stretched out a tiny hand to grab Lore’s finger, as if investigating. Confirming that this was not, in fact, his daddy. Then, just as slowly, he lifted up his sippy cup to offer it to Lore. Reg caught on immediately. “Oh – you’re sharing?” The kid loved to share.

Lore thought for a millisecond that this kid was gonna unhinge his jaw to reveal some eldritch horror and rip his face clean off. Instead, he took his finger. That was nice. It occurred to him that Nik was one of the only organic beings that would grow up used to the feeling of bioplast sheeting. Aside from Lyra, of course. He probably thought it was normal. 

And then he held up his cup. Lore examined it, thinking maybe it was broken or something, or thinking maybe he was trying to hit Lore in the face and just was too slow to gather momentum. 

Oh, sharing. He took the cup from Nik. “Thanks, Kid.” He stood back up and held the cup, but didn’t go anywhere. If he was anything like Lyra at that age - and apparently most kids were - he was going to want the cup back in like thirty seconds.

“Well… there have been some rough days, definitely. But I’ve gotten used to it. There’s something sort of comforting about… always knowing how he is. Always having him there.” Reg kissed Nik’s little head again.

“He’ll get used to you. Eventually… probably…” But the staring would continue. “…Rhea didn’t like the staring at first either.”

“Smart kid.” The staring was creepy. Something told Lore that Reg was sort of happy he was so creeped out - he wouldn’t put it past him. He seemed to have an uncomfortable grudge against Lore, and, honestly, he didn’t blame the guy.
