Something I've been thinking about for a while now is that "identification of enemies as a unifying cause", because I've been seeing that one *everywhere* on all political sides, both online and in meatspace, and I think it's been a warning sign for years.

It takes a lot of different forms, but it's always "we can only trust those who are Like Us" -- often repackaged for oppressed groups as "the Other can never truly understand Us and *therefore* can't be trusted". I personally see it the most with trans groups because that's who I hear the most chatter from (I was in one trans-heavy fandom group online that deliberately drove out all cis fans). I know it's a thing in other queer groups -- biphobia has been on the rise because bisexuals are too Other for the True Gays, how dare they stray outside their own sex -- and of course the whole "queer is a slur" trend started (twelve years ago, christ, I remember when it was new discourse) as a way to fragment the community by destroying the accepted umbrella term. I don't know for sure if the same trend has hit communities of color, me not being involved in any of those for obvious reasons, but I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Can this trend be reversed, in nominally anti-fascist spaces? Hypothetically. I don't think it *will* be, because fascism speaks to feelings that a lot of people, most people, find really alluring. It's an instinct to want your own community, to feel safest with people who are like you, to distrust those you can't predict. It's hard fucking work to consistently remind yourself, hey, that person saying "this is why we can't trust The Cis" is not actually on your side -- that outgrouping people according to their inborn traits is *inherently* the weapon of the enemy.
