whatever stranger things content netflix decides to release later i will never forget how noah schnapp was spreading raging zionist propaganda and giving people "zionism is sexy" stickers and yet the creator of the series and the directors decided to defend him calling him a brilliant young man and how his co stars have continued to hang out with him outside the set as if nothing had happened .
hello!!! i saw your that your requests were open so i was wondering if you were able to write a hurt/comfort zoro x reader story about how the reader gets injured from a fight, but they donât wanna be a burden so they hide it until they collapse on deck :)))
tell me that weâll be just fine (opla!zoro x you)
wc: 1.74k
cw/tags: hurt/comfort with happy sappy ending, swearing, canon-typical violence, descriptions of blood and injury, mentions of drinking and alcohol, zoro just loves you and you worry the shit out of him
note: yassss i love hurt/comfort injury prompts (it's the innate desire to just be carried and be vulnerable and have someone care in my weakest hour and and and and) hope you like this, thank you for your request !!
likes, reblogs, and replies are always appreciated <3
âGuys, I am about to get so wasted.â
âWe still have that good shit from Baratie, yeah?â
âHiding in the back of the cellar, baby!â A loud smack rings out into the harbor as Usopp and Sanjiâs hands clap together, deliriously excited after winning a scrimmage with a rival crew. Their proud vocalizations are added to by their captain and devolve into giddy skipping down the remainder of the dock as you make your way back to the ship. Zoro walks just ahead of you, glancing back every so often like he was worried you would collapse. You were planning to, but not now. Just get to the ship. Get to the ship and weâll be fine.
âI vote Zoro for vomit duty tomorrow morning,â Nami mutters next to you, nudging your arm with her elbow. Itâs a light touch but it feels like the world tilts sharply and you pray she canât see the panic in your eyes when you try to remain upright. Despite her best efforts to remain mature and indifferent, her eyes were sparkling with self-assurance that you only saw from her when she felt a mission went well. She carries the folder of coveted Marine intelligence under one arm, her other hand holds up a bag of goodies youâd snatched from the base that would make good money down the line. âPlus, it gives us some time to take our share of this stuff. Nice finds, by the way. Iâm impressed.âÂ
âThanks. I learned from the best,â you reply, relief flooding you when she turns back to watch her idiot crewmates and not further inspect the limp in your step. Zoroâs eyes meet yours over his shoulder and you give him a strained smile, well aware that you probably looked like youâd crawled out of hell. When he turns away again, you exhale with great difficulty, fighting off another wave of nausea that threatens to send you stumbling into the water. Itâs just a flesh wound, you figure. No need to halt their celebration just because you got a silly cut. âWhatâs your first pick out of the bag?â
âThereâs a pretty little jeweled chalice I was looking at,â she says casually. The waning afternoon sun makes her hair look like a fire, bright and warm. âWe could scrape off the rubies and pawn them at the next island.â
âOr, you could drink water from it and look like a pompous asshole.â Just keep it casual. Be normal. The pulse in your ears becomes slightly faster when you notice the foggy spots in your vision. âFreeze some of the diamonds from that candlestick and use them as ice cubes.â
âVery true,â she laughs and you force out a chuckle to mirror her, wincing at the aching pain in your side. Her eyebrows furrow and her mouth falls into a frown. Your attempts to seem fine were starting to fall through. âHey, are you okay? Youâve been walking a little slower than usual.âÂ
âIâm fine, I promise. I just got punched in the gut a little harder than I anticipated,â you lie straight through your teeth, well aware that it wasnât just a fist that had you losing enough blood to fill the galley sink. To be fair, the guyâs second blade appeared out of nowhere. You were outnumbered five to one but still held your own; only when there was a single fighter left did he resort to cutthroat tricks. One minute, youâre parrying with ease; the next, a small dagger pops out from the fighterâs left sleeve, cutting a deep wound into your side before you can block it with the saber in your right hand. It was a dirty move and you mentally kicked yourself for not anticipating foul play much sooner. To make matters worse, you were only able to staunch the blood so much before Zoro found you in the courtyard. Though you sufficiently covered your injury, he was still eyeing you like he knew that something was off. Like clockwork, every minute he was checking on you. It was wordless, but you still knew he was inspecting you, waiting for you to reveal that something happened and that you needed help.
That moment came the instant your boots met the wood of the deck.Â
In seconds, your vision violently careens to the right and youâre conscious just enough to expect the thud of your head against the floor. But, the crash never comes. When you fall, your mind registers another body that you fall into, strong and stable. One arm slips effortlessly under your exhausted legs, lifting you from the ground while the other supports your upper back. Your eyes blur the image of your panicked crew like an oil painting, smearing it every which way until the colors are bleeding together more uncontrollably than the blood dripping from your side. Everything sounds like youâre drowning, rising above the water for a moment only to be pulled back down into murky disorientation.Â
âIdiot,â a low voice says. Itâs wrought with worry, even though you can tell theyâre trying not to hide it. Itâs clear enough that you know itâs coming from whoever is holding you. âWhy the hell did you wait?â Youâre barely able to distinguish far-off shouting from Sanji, ordering Luffy and Usopp to grab his knives. But, if all three of them were over there and Nami was throwing open cabinets looking for the med kit, that means the person holding you was⌠âFuck. I knew something was wrong.â You have half the mind to articulate a weak response, but it comes out as nothing more than a groan when youâre placed onto what feels like the galley counter. The pounding in your forehead starts to become airy, like when youâre walking down the sidewalk after a night of drinking until you were on the verge of passing out. Zoro doesnât let you go, though. His calloused fingers gently brush the dirt from your face, quietly pleading for you to stay with me, stay with me, stay with me. âYouâre okay. Weâre okay. Just stay with me.âÂ
âTheyâre losing a lot of blood and I canât find the damn med kit.âÂ
âWhereâs everyone else?â
âAbove deck, having a collective panic attack.â Namiâs voice sounds like itâs coming from miles away.Â
âFigures.â Zoroâs, on the other hand, is the only thing keeping you rooted and stopping you from drifting off. Itâs sharp and strained, nothing like youâd ever heard from him before. Sanjiâs lanky steps enter the kitchen and you hear the zip of his knife bag somewhere close to your ear.
âThis is bad; I need to stop that bleeding or they mightââ Zoroâs grip on your hand is tight, physically holding you down to reality. Whether you laced your fingers in his or the other way around, you didnât remember.
âWell, letâs fucking do something about it then, waiter,â is the last thing you hear before darkness wipes your vision.Â
Your eyes blink open after what feels like seconds, but the starry sky outside the window tells you it had been hours. It takes a moment for the details to come back to you, as does the soreness where they must have patched up your wound. The hard stone of the counter has been replaced by your bed and the comforting sway of the ship tells you Luffy ordered the ship to depart. Itâs healing, in a way, the rocking back and forth motion of the ship that reminds you how close you were to slipping away. After a minute, you muster up enough energy to look at the rest of your room and you canât help smiling when you see Zoro sitting at your bedside, tensely sleeping with the Wado Ichimonji laid across his lap. His eyes fly open when you whisper his name, delicately setting his blade on the floor before crouching at your side.Â
âYouâre okay,â he breathes and it sounds more like a reassurance for himself than for you.
âIâm okay,â you confirm just as softly, threading your fingers between his and squeezing lightly. He squeezes back, looking at you like you painted the constellations outside your window. âHow long have you been here?â
âSince Sanji and Nami fixed you up, about six hours ago.â
âYouâve been sitting there for six hours?â
âI would have sat longer. Iâd wait for you, no matter how long you slept,â he says and it sounds like a vow. âYou scared the shit out of me, you know that?â
âSorry,â you apologize weakly, giving him as much of a shy smile as you could. He rolls his eyes in exasperation but canât help the corner of his mouth quirking too. âI didnât want to bother you all while you were celebrating.â
âYou really think Iâm going to give alcohol priority over you?â
âDepends on the alcohol,â you point out and he shakes his head at your teasing. Your hand fits in his like a puzzle piece and youâre struck by the overwhelming feeling of safety you have whenever Zoroâs around. âBut, really. Iâm sorry for worrying you.âÂ
His eyes darted to the side like youâd said something that embarrassed him. The only thing he could think to do in that moment was bring your hand to his lips and press the lightest kiss to it. A promise that heâd always take care of you. He never was the best with words, you realized in your friendship-borderline-relationship with him. The things you said tended to short-circuit his brain and it was fascinating to watch him try and think of a coherent response. In times like these, however, when heâs simply unable to find the words for how much he feels for you, his actions are infinitely louder.Â
âYou should go back to sleep. Iâll still be here when you wake up. Do you need anything before you rest? Water or blankets or something?â
âNo, just you. If you got in here with me, I wouldnât mind,â you suggest nonchalantly and you giggle when his face becomes pinker. He obliges, though, slipping into the covers with you and carefully pulling you into him until youâre pressed against his chest like your own personal heater. His breathing is slow and steady, but you swear you can hear his heartbeat racing. âYouâre the only one Iâll ever need, I think.â
âFeelingâs mutual, sweetheart. Just donât do stupid shit like get stabbed again.â

the first time opla!zoro says he loves you, he's not even sober.
"just so you know, i'm never dragging your drunk ass out of a bar ever again. this is a one time thing," you huff, breathless from dragging the muscled, unofficial alcoholic half a mile down the hill toward the harbor. "and you better leave me some of those tarts from sanji as payback for lugging you home."
"you're so fuckin' pretty when you're mad," he drawls, eyelids heavy as the dirty boots on his feet. "even prettier when you're fighting in those fancy clothes we got from...where did we get 'em from?"
"that's a nami question, zoro. i have a bad memory. for instance, i don't remember why the fuck i came out here to get you in the first place," you groan, shoulders aching and legs sore from constantly steering your crewmate away from falling into the gutter. "heavens forbid one of our enemies catches you off guard; we wouldn't hear the end of it from luffy if you got your ass kicked while you were out drinking-"
"i can't wait for the street to stop spinning so i can tell you a secret," he grins stupidly and you recoil slightly, unfamiliar with the sappy expression on zoro's face. the wood of the ship's deck creaks under your feet and you pray no one wakes up to question what you're doing.
"what's the secret?"
"the secret is that i'm in love with you, but i can't tell you 'cause it's a secret," he states as matter-of-factly as a drunk could and you suddenly feel lightheaded, like you were the intoxicated one and not him. "yeah, i really am in love with you. it's kind of bad, honestly."
"and why is that?" your mind is running at two hundred miles a minute, wrought with confusion and laughing at the irony of how loose alcohol makes a guy who usually has a stick shoved as far up his ass as it could go.
"because it's a secret and i can't tell you that i'm in love with you. promise you won't tell anyone my secret?"
"i promise, zoro, but sober you and sober me are going to have a long talk in the morning," you say gently, helping him into his hammock and making sure he doesn't tumble out of it.
"am i in trouble?"
"no, but you're gonna get me in trouble." you sigh and he frowns like you'd told him someone had died.
"fuck, what'd i do?"
"you made me fall in love with you too, stupid."
"oh! well, now that's not so bad, is it? i promise i won't tell anyone. trust me, i'm great at keeping secrets."

đŹđŽđŚđŚđđŤđ˛: you just can't get to sleep thanks to a terrible rainstorm terrorizing the ship. luckily, your tossing and turning inspired nami with an idea: just go sleep with the swordsman.

With how the hail storm rattled against the hull of the ship, and how the vessel careened on the waves, you were at a loss as to how Nami was fast asleep already.
The crew had settled down for sleep hours ago, the laughter and teasing from dinner falling into a soft silence draping over each and every one of youâwell, except you, that is.
Even after months at sea, the incessant rocking had you curling into yourself, headache blooming under the skin of your temples. Groaning, you rolled around on your sheets, burying your face in your pillow as you shoved the blanket off your shoulders and down your body. Chill air hit you instantly, a contrast to the sweat rising from your skin. All you wanted was sleep, but your ears rang with the sound of rainfall and the far off thunder rumbling through the sky.
You tossed and turned again and again, rest ever so far away and the sway of the Going Merry making kept your mind alert with all its tilts and jumps. Yet another grunt of frustration huffed from your lips, and Nami finally sprang up, glaring at you from across the cabin.
âWhatâs wrong?â she demanded, her eyes heavy and her annoyance high.
Great. Now Nami was upset, which usually lasted a whole day if you were unlucky. You didnât bother turning back to look at her, digging yourself deeper into your blanket. âSorryâŚâ
She sighed and rubbed at her cheek, gaze drifting over your exhausted form, taking in what she could in the dark. Settling back down, Nami said what sheâd been thinking for the past two hours of listening to you loll around restlessly. âJust go sleep with Zoro.â
A beat passed, your eyes slowly opening as you tried to convince yourself youâd heard her wrong. You flipped around and gaped at the girl slinking into her sheets with a smirk you would catch through any dark room. âWhat? Why would IâWhy would youâNami!â
She chuckled darkly, her bright eyes finding yours. Nami propped her head up on her hand. âIt wouldnât be the first time, right?â
Trying and failing to make a comeback, you opened and closed your mouth like a gaping fish, settling on crossing your arms over your chest. âThatâs none of your business.â
âUh-huh,â she drawled. âBut Iâve got dawn watch and am in desperate need of sleep.â All you did was stare at her, your glare fading. Nami rolled onto her back, offering into the silence, âItâs not like heâll turn you away.â
You tried so very hard to let her logic roll off your shoulders, but it was cold (Zoro was warm) and you were tired (Zoro was a good napping buddy). As appealing as the idea was, you didnât want to bother him. Zoro was probably just getting back from his night watch, Sanji heading up to the deck in his wake. Zoro wouldnât turn you away, but he might grumble at you, and sometimes that was worse.
âStop overthinking,â Namiâs voice whispered through a hiss. âHe likes you.â
She was just trying to give you heart palpitations saying stuff like that. âDoes not.â
âMhmm. Get some sleep⌠with Zoro.â
You threw your pillow across the room, missing her bed by a longshot. You could throw pillows and shout whispered words at her all you wantedâit didnât change that she had a point.
It wouldnât be the first time you crawled into Zoroâs hammock late at night, seeking shelter from sleeplessness that seemed to miraculously melt in his embrace. Nami mightâve been right; Zoro might like you, at least more than he liked anybody else. It was confusing most days, but your mind was so mushy with fatigue you didnât bother running over the finer details of your affections for the swordsman.
You puffed out a huff, eliciting a growl from the dark, âGo. Or neither of us will sleep.â
âFine.â You threw off your blanket and marched out of the cabin before you could lose your nerve, trudging through the nearly pitch black hall of the Merry.Â
You yelped as you tripped over a discarded broom, cursing into the night as you kicked it aside and kept on toward the boyâs cabin. As soon as you laid eyes on the closed door, your footsteps faltered, heart stuttering.Â
The ship leaned on the waves and sent you teetering into the wall, and the decision was suddenly easy. You inched the door open gently, wincing at the momentary creak, and slipped inside.Â
The boysâ cabin always had a⌠unique scent to it. Somewhere between burning socks and musk is how Nami described it. Honestly (now, you would never tell her this), you just thought it smelled like Zoro. Though Zoro mightâve been slightly less odorous on good days, you mused.
The swordsman of your infatuation lay in a swaying hammock tied up between two support beams holding up the ceiling. A flash of lightning illuminated his peaceful face for a brief moment, and the room was back to black.Â
Collecting your wits, you approached him slowly, careful not to step on any of the clutters the boys left lying about. Lip pinched between your teeth, you stepped around a crate of slingshot ammo Usopp had crafted, catching your foot on the slingshot itself and jumping out of the way.Â
You swept the room fretfully, yet no one stirred, the usual snores rising and falling. A sigh puffed form your chest as you turned back to Zoroâs hammock, only to lock eyes with the stoic swordsman as he gazed blearily up at you.
Lurching back, you calmed your racing heart and huffed at him. âYou scared me.â
Zoro leaned up on his elbows, confused. âYou scared me.â His gaze flickered all over your face. âWhatâre you doing?â
You fisted your hands, feeling like a deer at headlights, and blurted, âNami kicked me out.â
Zoroâs brows drew instantly. âWhat?â He rose halfway when you hand found his chest, gently pushing him back down.
âI mean,â you amended. âI couldnât sleep, and she got tired of me rolling aroundâŚâ Bashful in how you averted your eyes, swaying on your feet, âI⌠sleep better with you. Yâknow?â
Not even a second later he tugged on your arm to draw you closer, shuffling over to offer you some room. You smiled softly, falling into the space beside him, molding right into his side. âYeah, I know.â
Your face warmed, your heart swelled, and you rested your head on the rigid outline of his shoulder, adjusting to find a comfortable place. Zoroâs arm slid under you and curled you further into his side, a sigh pulling from his chest, his muscles literally relaxing under each of your touches.Â
There wasnât a name for what you and Zoro were, not yet anyway, and somehow you were fine with that. He was there, and you were there, and that felt like enough. For now, you let your eyes finally give way to exhaustion, the pelting of the rain growing fainter and fainter.Â
Nami was a tease, but she made some good points a lot of the time. Youâd have to thank her in the morning, after you finally got to sleep in the arms of your swordsman.
âLove?â you mumbled, eyes still hazy with the sleep youâd dragged yourself from. You held a pair of bone white mugs, steam swirling up from them. The bed dipped as you set one knee after the other on the stiff mattress, inching forward to leer over him with a lovely smile.
Zoro was only just conscious enough to acknowledge you, blinking awake and leaning up on his elbows. âWhatâŚâ
Again, you smiled, leaning over to set one mug on the nightstand before lifting up the covers to slide in beside him. You balanced your mug in one hand and curled into his side, warming your hands on the glass. âI brought you coffee.â
His eyes drifted to the window, alarmed at the brightly shining sun. âWhat time is it?â
You hummed, adjusting to sit up a bit as you sipped at your own mug. âAfternoon probably.â
Zoro huffed as he shoved the blanket off, ignoring your annoyed puff and rubbing furiously at his eyes. There were black spots in his vision when he dropped his hand. His shoulders ached and the bandage around his arm felt like a shackle of some kind.Â
Nearly frantic, he clawed at the tight fabric, digging into his skin when it didnât budge. Your mug clinked onto the wooden nightstand and the sheets rustled as you followed him, your shoulder at his shoulder, your hand over his. Zoro softened entirely the moment your fingers brushed his own, your movements fluid and gentle as you removed the bandage in one swoop.
He heaved, stiff shoulders drooping over at the light caress of your hand over his worn, tanned skin. Your other hand came to nurse at his hair, nails scratching at his scalp and drawing a softer, more relaxed sound from him.Â
Your cheek rested on his arm, your body wrapped around him. âLove?â
He liked it when you called him that. It made him feel loved, despite everything. âYeah?â
âI love you.â As if you needed to say it out loud. He knew. He knew that above anything else, really.Â
âI... me too.â
A little snort left you as you turned to bury your face in the sleeve of his shirt. âIdiot.â
You knew he felt it too, despite everything. His next sigh lifted and lowered your head. âYou tired, big guy?â
He grunted, turning his face to brush his lips over your temple, closing his eyes as a draft floated in and out of the room. âNah.â
You laughed again. Conversation fled the room, leaving your intertwined breaths alone with the quiet. Zoro couldnât explain this feeling well; if he tried, heâd say it was warm. Like a bonfire, the flickering light reflected in his eyes, the warmth wrapping around his entire being till he could hardly breathe.
But he couldn't articulate all that, so it was just warm.
His eyes fell to the nightstand. âYou didnât need to make me coffee.â
âI donât need to do anything,â you reminded him, and that was simple enough.Â
Zoro reached to take his mug and leaned back against the headboard of the bed, waiting till you took up your own coffee and settled into his side again. Only then did he cast his mug a look, admiring the rich blackness swirling inside.Â
A sweet scent filled his nose and his gaze found your coffee, a nice taupe from the cream and sugar you surely flooded it with. You took three long sips before you noticed his lingering eyes. âYou do like yours black, right?â
âMhmm.â He tipped the mug back and drank half the coffee in a matter of seconds, grimacing slightly. That's one way to wake yourself up. Still⌠âCan I try yours?â
You obliged, of course, lifting the cup to his lips and tipping it. His hand hovered yours to make sure it didnât spill, and the taste was nearly too much. Whereas his coffee was still scalding and bitter as all be, yours was⌠warm and sweet.Â
Much like you. He offered you a small smile, downed the rest of his drink, and set it aside. He was so bitter much of the time, too angry and sour. But you were consistently different. âYouâre⌠too sweet for me.â
A beat passed, and you sputtered out a laugh. You set down your mug and swung a leg around his hips, straddling him as you cupped his face, your smile incredulous as you shook your head. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
His ears burned red, and he lost his sudden conviction. âYouâre just⌠so nice.â
You raised a brow. âAnd youâre not?â
He didnât answer, and once more you laughed in his face.Â
âLove,â you nearly whispered, your eyes too deep and attentive, leaving him no room to hide. âI donât know if youâve met my boyfriend, but heâs very nice to me.â You pressed a kiss to his forehead, then his nose, then his cheek. âHeâs very sweet to me.â And his other cheek. âI can tell he loves me, even if heâs too shy to say it.âÂ
Zoro could hardly breathe, trying so very hard to not let out the soft gasp rising in his chest as you grinned like a devil. âHe should know by now Iâm not too sweet for him.â
His hands found your hips and his eyes darted to the side. He scoffed, âWhatever.â
âHey.â You hooked a finger under his chin and made him face you again. âI love you.â
âYou said that already.â
âI know.â
A piece of hair fell over your eyes, obstructing Zoroâs view of your face, so he reached up to brush it away. Your eyes flickered to his approaching finger, and in an instant your teeth clamped down on his hand. Not too hard, of course, but he still jerked away with pursed lips. âWould ya stop biting me?â
You cupped a hand over your mouth, unable to stop the laughter bubbling up from within you. âIâmâIâm sorry! I dunnoâdunno whyââ You dissolved into giggles, careening forward into his chest and tucking your head into his neck.Â
Zoro didnât bother fighting his smile, wrapping his arms around your back and resting his chin on your head, completely forgetting that the day was halfway through and that work was a thing to be done.
nami
The sound of humming shouldnât have made Nami so on edge, but it was only because she knew exactly who the melody belonged to that her defenses were on the rise.Â
Slowly, she rounded the final row of tangerine trees. Sheâd gone thereâto the place she used to call homeâintending to find her sister. What she had hoped she wouldnât find was you.
Yet there you were, up on a stool trying to reach the ripe tangerines at the top of the tree. You usually helped Nojiko with the harvest this time of year. Nami should have known to expect you.
Your rose up on your tip toes, tongue poking out, and your fingertips barely grazed one last tangerine. One foot left the stool in a last final effortâyour fist closed around the fruit but your foot missed the stool by an inch.Â
You hit the ground unceremoniously, landing on your back with a harsh thump. Namiâs first instinct was to run up and make sure youâre all right. Well, noâher first instinct was to laugh at you.
Turning your head to the friendly sound, you ignored the pain in your butt to smile wearily up at the ginger girl now looming over you. Her shadow blocked out the sun and a halo formed around her body.Â
âClutz,â she murmured, reaching out a hand. You took it with a roll of your eyes, jumping to your feet and dusting off your pants.
Your smile was easy even as a bruise formed on your skin. âWhatâre you doing here?â
âNojiko,â she replied simply, not wanting to say that really, Arlong was in one of his tempers again. Youâd only worry if she said that, and the smile would leave your face, and Nami couldnât have that.
âRight,â you nodded, ignoring the sting in your chest that she wasnât there for you. She never was, so you shouldnât bother hoping, but oh well. âSheâs in town.â
Nami pursed her lips. âRight.â
The pair of you locked eyes, sucking all the air out of the moment and leaving it rather suffocating to stand in. Nami knew you knew. You were always around, being Nojikoâs close friend (being Namiâs best friend, once upon a time). Nami knew you knew of her plan. She said nothing about it, and neither did you.
This was only the fourth time sheâd seen you in six years. She ached like every other time, her skin blazing where youâd grabbed her hand. In six years, youâd both grown older, taller, stronger⌠in your case, prettier.
If distance made the heart grow fonder⌠Nami killed that thought where it stood.
She started to turn and clear her throat. âI should go.â
Nami barely made it three steps before a hand closed around her wrist and she forgot how to breathe. Nami didnât know you and you didnât know her, not anymore. There shouldn't be any reason for her to turn around. Nami should be able to rip away from you and storm off with no trouble.
But Nami turned around slowly and met your eyes, losing herself as you smiled softly, hopefully. âStay?â
âI canât.â
âI wanna talk to you,â you pleaded. âYouâre still my friend, right?â
Yes. Please. âI donât have friends anymore.â
Your grip tightened. âButââ
âYou donât want to be my friend,â Nami snapped. âAny attachment you have to me is just clinging to the past, okay?â
Hand slackening, Nami nearly breathed a sigh of relief as your hand started to slip, only for your fingers to intertwine with hers. âI donât believe that. Nami, I am your friend. Iâve always been. And I worry.â
This was the longest conversation youâd had with her since Arlong took her away. Arlong. You gritted your teeth and sent out a curse. If only you were strong enough to do something, to save the friend who gave up her life to save that damn village.
Nami watched the clouds enter your eyes, darkening the lively glow she so admired, and she found the strength to pry your hand off of her. Nami could hardly stand to look at you when your face fell, but she managed. âDonât worry about me.â
âNamiâŚâ
She couldnât bare to drag you down a similar path as her. You were too sweet. Too good. The world needed good people you, and so she wasn't about to go around tainting you with her darkness.Â
She took a step back, then another, and turned away, hopefully for the last time. âGoodbye.â

Having a human boyfriend wasnât as hopelessly romantic as the girls in your pod made it out to be. Sure, the idea of star-crossed love was appealing, and the physical nature of human boys was certainly something to admire. But really, you didn't care much for human men in the carnal senseâZoro was your exception.
Usually, you were nothing but doting on him, flaws and all, and he did the same for you. The pair of you slouched together, brooded together, gossiped together, napped together. You both wore the otherâs sensual markings dotting your skin with pride, flaunting them even.
But sometimes, tensions do rise.
You watched as Nami and Robin headed down from the ship to the sandy beach down below, wanting nothing more than to join them, but you would find it much more enjoyable if your swordsman joined you. But all Zoro wanted to do was sleep.
You stood over him, fangs peeking out as you bit your lip. âEveryoneâs gone down to the beach.â
He grunted in reply, eyes shut contently. Narrowing your eyes, you stepped sideward and let the rays of sun youâd been blocking hit his face. Zoro contorted uncomfortably, blinking up at you. âHuh?â
âIâd like to swim with you,â you stated simply.Â
âWhy?â
âBecause itâs fun.â
He rolled his eyes and shifted away from the sun. âHard pass.â
The deck went dangerously silent aside from the far off sounds of the sea, so he wasnât all too shocked to crack one eye open and find you fuming over him. âSomething wrong?â
âYes!â You huffed and crossed your arms. âMy boyfriend wonât swim with me, his beautiful, amazing, awesome mermaid girlfriend.â
He gave you a single sigh, and you knew you had him hook, line, and sinker. A pleasant smile spread over your face as Zoro heaved himself to his feet, barley sparing you a glance even as he slung an arm around your shoulder. He sported a scant grin, so he wasnât too frustrated. âCan we go on a walk after?â
âOh, so now youâre contributing?â You nuzzled into his side and stepped onto the soft sand. âYeah, we can go on a walk.â
Zoroâs cheeks dusted pink, chin ducked like he wasnât a big romantic under all that muscle. But you knew the truth, even when Sanji pleaded with you to see sense and leave the mossheaded swordsman. Like youâd ever listen to the stupid cook anyway.
âThanks,â you murmured into his skin, kissing his hand draped on your shoulder. âI couldâve gone without you, but I didnât want to.â
Your bluntness always warmed his heart, even when your words came out less than tender as they just did. He kissed your temple briefly, Zoroâs attention caught by Luffy and Usopp splashing each other in knee deep water. A bright laugh left you and you were gone, fleeing his side to bound into the ocean. Ten seconds later, you yelped, falling head first into the lapping waves, a vibrant tail flipping up where your feet should be.
Chuckling after you, Zoro waded in to just below his knees, arms folded over his chest. Your soaked form floated through the shallows, arms gliding your way through. He watched with amusement as your ducked underwater and raced at Usoppâs legs, clamping your hands around his ankles and sending the poor guy leaping back to the beach. Thatâs when he bellowed out a laugh. Your eyes darted to find him in an instant, warmth spreading from fin to face as his smile consumed you whole.Â
Laugh fading, Zoroâs eyes fluttered open to your hot-cold gaze. You always bit at him harshly when he said youâre an open book, but itâs the truthâZoro loved being able to tell what youâre thinking, never having to make complex deductions like he often does with everyone else. And though it made his skin feel warm and tight, he could see now exactly the depth of what you felt for him. Something in that was immensely assuring.Â
He shed his shirt in one motion, hurling it back on the sand and trudging to meet you in deeper water. Standing over you, he let slip a warmer smirk than usual. Your eyes peeked up over the water, smile warped below the surface. The water lapped at Zoroâs chest as your hands reached for his shoulders, and you dragged yourself up in his body to hang off his neck, nose inches away from his own.
âHey, sailor,â you giggled.Â
He huffed a laugh. âHey, fish.â
You swept your tail around his legs, curling around his limbs till he nearly toppled over, your lips a stiff line. âCareful, Zoro-Mine.âÂ
His eyes took on a darker tone, the name youâd gifted him some months ago capturing his attention wholly. Zoro nosed at your cheek, humming softly. âWalk?â
âIâve barely cooled off!â You snorted, pushing his face away as you slipped right through his arms, ducking underwater and darting off before his hands could catch you. You emerged at Namiâs side, scaring her out of her skin, a laugh stifled by your pruning fingertips.Â
Maybe an hour rolled off your shoulders before you scanned the area for your swordsman, finding him sitting atop the powdery sand with his eyes set on the horizon. Zoro practically glared at the sky, so much so that he didnât notice you dragging yourself up the shore till your soft grunts of effort met his ears. Jolting to attention, Zoro reached to scoop under your arms and pulled you closer, resting you between his legs. He leaned his head on your temple, your body melting into him as his warmth spread to your cold skin.
âReady?â he mumbled. You nodded gently, and when the sun dried out your scales and made them retreat into your skin, Zoro clutched your hand to alieve that familiar sting all through your body. Your tail parted down the middle and formed two ever-awkward legs. By some ancient magic neither of you understood, your clothes sparkled to existence along your skin.Â
Zoro gripped your hands and rocketed you off the ground, relishing in the little laugh you gave when you landed on your feet. You called over your shoulder absently mindedly, not entirely caring if the others heard you, eyes fixated on Zoro alone. âWeâll be back before dark!â
You faintly heard Namiâs, âYeah right,â before you led Zoro into the forest with a slight skip.
Having a human boyfriend could be exciting at times. Zoro never frowned at your questions, always ready with a reply whether he really knew the answer or not. He could toss you over his shoulder and race you through the trees (and somehow you always win despite your fawn-like legs).Â
You just broke through another low-hanging branch when Zoro caught your hand, swinging you around into his chest. Bubbling laughter, you flashed a fanged smile up at him, gaze swallowing him whole. Zoro traced your cheek with a fingertip, simply admiring your expression as it softened into one of blissful content.Â
With a shake of his head and a gentle grin, Zoro slung his arm over your shoulder and started to walk back to the beach. âLetâs just walk back, yeah? I donât have the energy to lose another race.â
You chuckled into his shoulder. âSure. I donât care to win anymore anyways.â
(The fact that he always let you win hung in the air, unspoken and tender on your heart).
Time slipped right through your hands, and soon enough the sun dipped below the treeline up above. You watched it disappear through the dense branches. âNami was right. Weâre gonna be late.â
Zoroâs shrug shook your body. âSheâs usually right, but she doesnât need to know that.â
âSo⌠we should stay out all night to scare her instead?â
He cast you a smile. âRead my mind.â
Having a human boyfriend could be annoying too, sure. At times their kind perplexed you, turning you around till you didn't know left from right. Yet the only ones who held you steady were on that crew--Zoro's crew.
Zoro was human, and he couldn't help it, and you found yourself caring less and less with every day that went by, till he was no longer your human boyfriend, but simply Zoro-Mine, who happened to be human.
And with every day that passed, you lost the title of mermaid girlfriend in his mind as well, and became only yourself, who happened to sprout a tail when he took you up in his arms, ran out to the moonlit ocean, and tossed you squealing back into the waves.

The last island had warned the waters to come were infested with dark creatures of slithering scales and tempting voices. Creatures that pull you in deep and leave you out to dry a corpse. Born from seafoam, storms, and desire. Mermaids.
âMermaids?â Zoro drawled.Â
âI met a mermaid once,â said Usopp, and everyone groaned unanimously. âShe tried to take me down, but my charms were just too much, so she let me go.â
Everyone surely believed him, of course.Â
And of course the motley crew ignored every reservation and warning and sailed headfirst into the treacherous sea. At first, nothing at all was out of the ordinary. The morning fog hung tentatively over the water splashing at the ship's hull as it powered through. Sure, the sun couldâve shined a bit brighter through the thick clouds, but it was a lovely day for adventure.
Nami stood at the helm keeping an eye on the horizon, relishing in the breeze hitting her face, when you heard an odd buzzing in her ear. She swiped at the air and rubbed her ear on her shoulder, but the sound only grew louder. Puffing her cheeks, she turned to ask Sanji to get her the bug spray, when she noticed he too was messing with his ears.Â
She laid eyes on each of the crew scattered around the deck, enjoying the cool weather. Everyone shifted uncomfortably, faces screwing up as though in pain.Â
âDo you guys hear that?â she asked needlessly, gathering their attention.
Zoro cupped his ears, nodding. âYeah, itâs likeâŚâ
âBuzzing,â Luffy finished. He kept swatting at the air, searching out for some fly assaulting him.
âNo, itâs⌠itâs singing.â Sanji faced the waters, the words of the village folk coming back to him as his eyes widened. He whipped back around to lock eyes with Nami just as she put everything together too.
She gasped. âMermaids.â
The ship rocked and the weather shifted drastically in seconds. Already thick clouds doubled in number, drawing close and creating a swirling mass in the sky. Waves rumbled and rose to crash over the deck, sending the crew into hysteria to grab their bearings.Â
And on top of it all, the most beautiful melody rose above the chaos, filtering into the ears of the crew and blocking all else out. Usoppâs hands slackened around the rope he held steady, eyes glazing over as he leaned toward the far off sound. Sanjiâs eyes flickered up to the sky, roamed over the gray clouds, and fell to the waters below, his mind dizzied by the beauty and lithe of the voices. Zoro stumbled drunkenly over his own two feet, desire furling in the pit of his stomach, legs carrying him to the edge of the ship to catch a glimpse of the one singing to him. Luffy froze midclimb up to the crowsnest, head darting this way and that, mind clouded. Nami gritted her teeth, resolve formed to not give in to the angelic, mystifying, amazing song sung just for herâshe left the helm unguarded, leaping to join her friends in calling out to the seas.Â
The crewâs voices overlapped in thier pleading for the woman to come near, to give them all that the song promised. Their every dream would come true, if only the mermaid would help them into the water. The pod of mermaids encircled the ship, their harmonies intertwining in one mind. The ship might have kept on drifting, guided by rough waters manipulated by the mermaidsâ hand, and crashed right into the reef and all the crew would be scooped up by the she-beasts, thrust into the deep to drown,
If not for one voice which rose above the rest in a demanding, desperate order: âSTOP!â
Instantly, the clouds parted and sun bled through. The song fell through to indignant shrieks, splashes dying down to ripples as shiny tails descended into the blue. Nami blinked awake, feeling hungover and headached, looking blearily out on the water. Vision clearing, she caught a sight she would never forget; a woman lain on the far rocks, a single beam of sun illuminating the vibrant scales running along her skin till they met at a tail dipping into the water.Â
The fact that their ship was headed right for those jagged rocks was an afterthought. She lurched back and sped into motion, barking out furious orders and smacking the men upside the head to push them into gear. Sanji stood frozen at the shipâs rail, gripping the wood in a vice, eyes glued to the creature. âNami, itâsââ
âI know!â She gripped his shirt and whipped him around, slapping the side of his face a few times. âWeâre going to crash!â
Sanji blinked, shook his head, and raced to grab a flinging rope, jumping high and tying in down in one swoop. Nami bolted to the steer, an eye out the window as she pulled with all her might to change their course. Usopp soon joined her, guiding the ship bit by bit to the leftâs clear passage. She fell backward when Zoroâs shout reached them, âWeâre clear!â
Risking a moment of peace, the navigator cupped her hands over her face, allowing her body to calm all its flighting-fighting instincts. The calm lasted for all of five seconds before the screaming began.
âLuffy! WhatâWhyâWhat?!â
Nami sprang upright, locking eyes with Usopp, and the two sighed in unison before heading above deck. Whatever Nami expected, it wasnât the terrified, shivering form of a mermaid baring her two fangs at a looming Luffy. The others stood a ways away, unsure what to do with themselves, but certain they didnât want to get involved with this.
âLuffy!â Nami cried. âDid you drag her up here?â
Given the mermaidâs following hiss, Nami assumed that was the case. Luffy inched closer still, and the mermaid lost all her gusto, face falling as she scrambled away form him, dragging her tail behind her.Â
The mermaid was beautiful; that was the common thread of thought. Her damp hair hung all around her face, nearly covering her deep eyes. Scales creeped up her torso and faded into skin around her chest. Her every movement was caught by the sun, her scales shimmering rainbow reflections into the air around her.Â
âStay back,â she hissed out, eyes narrowing upon Luffy. âDemon.â
Usopp scoffed, grabbing the mermaidâs sharp attention. âWhat, long-nose?â
Ruffling, chuckled awkwardly, he looked around at his friends for help, receiving nothing but raised brows. âI just meanâyouâre the mermaid.â
The mermaid blinked slowly. She seemed to have forgotten the threat before her, all attention directed at a quivering Usopp. âIâm the demon? Iâm the one who saved you. You think my people decided to let you live on their own?â She laughed, and the sound had a pretty ring to it. âNo. I commanded them.â
Her eyes darted back to Luffy as he took to sitting criss-crossed in front of her. âI should have let you and this demon-child die on the rocks.â
It soon became obvious she knew Luffy ate a devil-fruit just by one look at him, and she was not happy about it. Luffy only tilted his head at her hostility, a little frown on his face. âAre all mermaids this rude?â
You balked, gaping before snapping your mouth shut, not dignifying him with a reply. Luffy persisted. âI like your tail. What do you mean you saved us? Why?â
Curling your tail closer to yourself, hands holding your upper body up, you glanced from the pirate captain to each of his crew. They didnât look too threatening, but youâd learned long ago to never trust a humanâs looks. Many a mermaid died on the grounds of humans looking nice. So Luffyâs question begged an answer. Why did you save them?
You shrugged a shoulder, eyes drifting out to sea. âMy people need to eat.â
Usopp gulped. âWeâre very gamy. You wouldnât like usââ
âI wasnât done speaking,â she quipped back, a brow raised. âMers are carnivores by nature. Normally, we steer clear of humans.â You sneered at the word. âWe find your kind to be a predator, and weâre a peaceful people.â The swordsman scoffed and rolled his eyes at that.Â
âBut times have changed. The fish have fled this sea.â You took a deep breath, shakily letting it out. âMy people are starving, and they look to me as their princess for guidance.â Quickly clearing your throat to hide how the topic gloomed you, you snapped, âAll that is to say that I strictly forbade the hunting of humans despite the starvation. They disobeyed me. That is why I helped you.â
You faced them all as your tail began to glimmer even brighter, slowly but surely parting down the middle. Your face contorted slightly as your scales seemed to mold into your skin, leaving you bear before the crew of pirates. You shivered in the breeze, raising your gaze once more. âAny other questions?â
There seemed to be none, silence running around the deck, and you prepared to jump back into the water before your parents sent the guard to find you, when the demon-child spoke up.
âYeah,â Luffy nodded, face taken by seriousness. âHow do we bring the fish back?â
You blinked once, then twice, and then a third time for good measure, but nothing in his expression betrayed hilarity. He wasnât pulling your fin. The devil-fruit eater meant to help you.Â
Demon. Thatâs what he was. You knew this fully well. Itâs what your parents taught you from a young age. Devil-fruit eaters are the enemy of the sea, and thus the enemy of the mers. Youâd followed this rule all your life⌠but then you looked at the one they called Luffy, you really looked at him right in his face⌠and none of that made any sense anymore.
Sure enough, Luffy led the charge against the oil corporation mining near your peoplesâ home, threatening convincing them to move elsewhere. Within a few days of the minersâ departure, some mers managed to coax schools of fish back to their reefs. With the ecosystem and chain of life restored, the Straw Hat Pirates had no reason to stay.
And really, neither did you. What you did have, however, was a reason to go with the pirates. Adventure, the life youâd always dreamed of, away from the reef youâd felt tethered to for so long⌠and a certain member of the crew who had caught your rapt, undying attention.
Thereâs a legend that mermaids only fall in love once, never to find another who would fill the gap in their hearts. You would always call it foolish romance⌠but really, there might be something to it.
LUFFY
You were a goner the moment he offered to help you with those big, genuine eyes of his. As much as you tried to deny itâand you did try to deny itâyou were falling in love with a human. A devil-fruit eater at that. What had you been reduced to?
And yet, there was no denying it. Especially not when you couldnât bear to go an hour without laying eyes on him. Your mother said it was normal for mers to feel⌠possessive over the one who holds their affection, and that fact was not lost on you as you slithered through the water, approaching the pirate lazed out on the rocks heâd dragged you from about a week before.
Your eyes rose above the water first, little grin still below the surface. Luffy looked so relaxed, eyes on the clouds, every once in a while glancing at his crew on the anchored ship nearby. You braced your hands on the cool stone and launched yourself upward, fanged smile gleaming as water splashed Luffyâs legs. His laugh had you keening closer, dragging your tail along the rocks. Luffy grinned for all of two seconds before the seawater sunk in. Instantly drowsy, he tried to offer up another smile as you winced.
âSorry,â you giggled. âI always forget.â
He laughed it off, already recovering as he shifted to face you. Luffyâs eyes followed your tail to where your fins dipped into the sea. âIf only I could swim with you. Bet itâs fun.â
âIf only.â You shared a smile for a little too long, but it never grew uncomfortable. Lingering in the moment, you gazed over at his ship, melancholy taking over as your smile faltered. âSo⌠youâre leaving soon?â
âIn the morning.â You clicked your tongue and tried your best to act nonchalant, failing miserably as you pursed your lips and combed through your hair.
âWhy not tonight?â you offered with a tight grin. âYou should get away as fast as possible. I donât know how one becomes pirate king but it's not by sticking around a boring reef and its boring princess. Ha! Iâll even help bring your anchor up faster! Then you can be out by sundown.â
The silence crept up your spine, getting you all antsy as you lowered your gaze to the rippling waters. Shoulders tense, you could feel Luffyâs eyes on your profile as you picked at the algae along the rocks. He probably thought you were an idiot, rambling like that. And if so, that was fine. It would make him leaving so much easier.Â
Luffy inched toward you and ducked to meet your gaze. âCome with us.â
âWhat!â You hit an octave the best soprano would envy, losing your grip and slipping right off the rock back into the water. Your hands grabbed at the slippery stone, panic all over your face before you plunged under the surface.Â
You drifted under the waves, unmoving as the words replayed over and over in your head, leaving no room for misinterpretation. Glancing up at Luffyâs bright laughter, you caught sight of him peering down into the sea, his face muddled by reflections and ripples. He couldnât be serious. He just couldnât.Â
Luffy grew nervous when you didnât resurface, leaning over the water to catch a glimpse of your shimmery tail, when as quick as lightning you broke the surface and came nose to nose with him. Blinking wide, you breathed deeply, so close you felt his every exhale on your skin. âYou mean it?â
ââCourse!â Luffy offered you his hand despite the fact heâd lose all his strength the moment he touched your sea-soaked skin. âWanna join my crew?â
Yes. You wanted nothing more than to follow him to the end s of the earth and then some. Part of you had been hoping he would ask. The rest of you longed to take his hand and smother him in hugs till he pried you off him. But⌠the water swirled around your tail, threatening to carry you off in a current, and your lips quivered down.Â
âI⌠I canât!â you cried, dipping underwater before he could catch you, darting off into the blue. Panic bubbled in your chest, strangled gasps sending pops of air into the water around you. No matter what you wanted, you were bound to this reef. Your home, your kingdom⌠and above all that, to ever think of running off with a human was foolish beyond measure! So you wasted away all night long, lamenting around the sea, hiding above the coral and sands.Â
Luffy watched the water all morning, trusting you would show despite your disappearance implying otherwise. Nami set a hand on his shoulder. âLuffy, sheâs not coming.â
He had to hope. You wanted to go, he saw it in your eyes, and he wanted you to go too. Luffy didnât think he could bear leaving without you, and he wasnât exactly sure why. He knew from the moment he met you that he needed you on his crewâbut why? He searched his head for an answer, coming up short. Giving the sea one last hopeful glance, Luffy sighed and gave Nami the go-ahead.Â
The ship had barely sailed off when a shimmery, sparkling thing leaped out of the water, shouted his name, and plunged back into the blue. Luffy raced to the shipâs edge, a smile creeping up his face. You raked a trail of seaspray behind you as you darted just below the surface. Again, you propelled yourself out of the water. âWait!â
Luffy threw his head back laughing, holding down his hat on his head. He shot Nami an I told you so look, to which she rolled her eyes and turned, lest he catch her pleased smirk. A round of chuckles ran amongst the crew as they slowed the shipâs leave, not that it mattered; Luffy was already slingshotting his rubber arms out at you, and the next time you appeared arcing through the air, your shout turned into a yelp as his arms wrapped around you and pulled you in. Another panicked shout of his name left you before you collided with the rubber man, the pair of you rolling to the deck.
You worried your tail crushed him, the hefty weight of it landing on his legs, but all reservations fizzled out the moment his arms wrapped you up in a warm embrace. Luffyâs head found your shoulder, your hands hooking around his shoulders. âIâm covered in seawaterâŚâ
âDonâ care,â Luffy muttered into your skin even as he weakened and sank into you. âI knew youâd come with us.â
âWith you,â you corrected instinctively, pulling away to stare right into his eyes. âIâll follow you anywhere.â
He giggled softly. Luffyâs arms unraveled as he opted to instead cup your shoulders. âGood.â
From then on, where one went, youâd soon find the other. Not only on your end; Luffy quickly grew so accustomed to your presence that he began to wait for you to start eating, much to the amazement of his friends (Zoro almost admitted he was jealous before he saw the hints of puppy love in his captainâs eyes, and decided to let it go for now).Â
You still had some things to wear off before you fully let yourself admit you were falling for a human. Luffy seemed to be completely comfortable just going around holding your hand, swinging them between your bodies as your cheeks warmed. Luffy never strayed far from your side, comfortably resting an arm on your shoulder or some other contact. You never completely told him off for it, somewhat liking how his warmth contrasted with the cold of your sea-ridden body. Â
Now, itâs a given that Luffy cannot swim. He ate a devil fruitâeveryone knew this fact very well. But now Luffy had his mermaid with him! All his faith went into knowing you would always swim to his rescue should he need it, so whatâs the harm if he got a little bit more reckless surrounding the sea?
(The harm is to your stress. By God, he would be the end of you one way or another).
The number of times one of the crew has called your name, given you this tired and sorry look, and pointed out to sea. Luffy was likely to be flapping about in the distance. The most recent occurrence, Sanji set a hand on your shoulder and went to let down a rope ladder. âIâll help you back up, lovely.â
Outwardly, you might gripe about holding his hand and having to save his devil-fruit ass from drowning every other weekâbut inwardly? Youâd turn hell over before you let Luffy die. So you held his hand tightly in yours, wearing a smile so small only Luffyâs keen eye could see.Â
NAMI
Without really realizing it, Nami had fallen headfirst for your awkward, waterlogged, fishy kind of charm (and she wasnât at all going to complain). She first started feeling it when the freshly victorious crew met your mer royalty parents at the surface, your tail mesmerizing as it dipped just into the water, your upper body propped up onto some scattered rocks. Your eyes filled with hope the longer you spoke to them in words too far to reach. Majestic. Thatâs the only word to describe you.
Well, majestic and graceless. That second descriptor was added when you rolled off the rocks into the water, beaming up at your parents before doing a figure eight around the sea and vaulting into the air. You flipped tail over head, cackling as you hit the water with a splash. A tiny laugh left Nami, eyes shining.
She was the first to help haul you up a rope ladder, hands clutching your damp arms. Nami met your smile steadfastly. âWhatâd you tell them?â
You giggled, cheeks warm at how you practically laid across her legs, the rest of the crew gathered around. âI just told âem I found something worth leaving for.â
(Youâd told them you found a pretty human girl and had to leave with her or else you would probably die).
You promised to return for your birthright throne one day, though that promise hurt you. You had a duty to your people after all, no matter how pretty Nami was. But until then, you had today, and you would make the most of it.Â
Love wasnât enough of a word to describe what you felt looking at Nami, and obsession was a bit too extreme (though Usopp would teasingly disagree). You simply⌠couldnât help but gravitate toward her any chance there was, ever in her orbit. Where Nami was, you were soon to be found. Nami never told you to screw off or give her space; on the contrary, when your shoulder brushed hers, she pressed into you fervently, skin to skin and warm.
It only took a month for you to throw all caution to the wind and do the only thing you knewâgo forth with the mer courting rituals (you were hopelessly at a loss, only doing what youâd seen the older mers do to beckon the attention of their intended).
Nami, clueless, accepted each gift of dazzling seashells and shimmery pearls with alighted smiles, taking you in her arms even when you smelled of the kelp forest youâd swam through to find the treasures. She laughed off the bites you gave her wrists, arms, and sometimes shoulders, snickering about how it tickled. And she sat and listened to every song you sat her down to listen to, closing her eyes as the melody calmed her, never needing any actual enchantment to draw her in.Â
In turn, you assumed her habir of buying you things was some sort of human ritual. Why else would Namiâs cheeks be so rosy as she handed you a luxury hairbrush youâd raved about seeing in a shop window?Â
âDid you see this new pearl she brought me?â Nami leaned toward Robin giddily, rolling the pearl in her palms. Her lip between her teeth, she stifled a too bright smile. âIâll have enough to make a bracelet if hse keeps this up.â
âThen Iâd say youâll soon have a bracelet,â Robin mused, turning a page in her book. Nami tilted her head, eyes narrowed.
âWhatâs so funny?â
Robinâs lips curled up into a grin, eyes darting up to meet Namiâs. She barely contained her mirth as she flipped the book around and handed it over. âNami, sheâs been courting you.â
Jaw slack, Nami poured over the open page, heart stuttering. She slapped a hand to her temple, huffing a laugh. âSo by giving her gifts, Iâve been courting her back?â
Humming, Robin took her book and closed it gently. She turned to face Nami entirely, brows raised. âYou donât seem upset.â
âIâm not,â Nami quipped, cheeks warming instantly. Robin chuckled behind her hand. âIâI meanâUhmâŚâ
The older woman stood and set a hand on Namiâs shoulder. âIâd expect an invite to swim fairly soon.â
Sure enough, not a day later, you shyly slinked up to Nami as she headed to the galley for dinner. Your hand found her wrist, tugging her aside as Zoro and Robin passed by wearing matching grins. You stared at your feet uncharacteristically, shuffling back and forth. Nami felt hot all over. She reached out a lissome finger to wrap around your pinky, whispering, âWhat is it?â
Swallowing thickly, you huffed a confident breath and snapped your head up. âWould-you-go-on-a-swim-with-me-tomorrow?â
A little smile worked its way up Namiâs face. Your eyes squeezed shut the second you finished your sentence, wincing like she might lash out. âIâd like that.â
Your whole face lit up, eyes wide as saucers. âO-Okay. At sunset. Weâll be docked at that island by then, right?â
Nami nodded and pulled you into the galley. Right as she passed through the door, before she could catch the teasing glances of the others, she turned and mumbled, âItâs a date.â
Nobody questioned it when you hissed your fangs at poor Usopp, booting him out of his seat right next to Nami, and promptly plopped down next to the grinning navigator.
Sunset came to slowly, in your opinion. All day youâd been tripping over nothing, nervous hands making your awkward legs even more coltish than usual. Around evening, the ship tipped too far left far too quickly, sending you careening right into Nami. You dragged the both of you down to the deck, face hidden in your hands as she laughed brightly.
And finally, the sun descended across the sky, shooting oranges and yellows and pinks into the clouds.Â
The wind kissed your face as you leaned against the shipâd railing, eyes darting back and forth over the rippled waters below. Fish flittered at the surface, bubbling her and there, muttering awful curses at each other. Nami sidled up beside you, eyeing your profile before gazing down.Â
You snickered, drawing her attention. âFish hear all sorts of swears and insults from the sailors. I wish you could understand them because I will never be caught translating that mess.â
Your laugh trickled off as you looked at her, eyes trailing up and down her form. She wore one of her bikini tops and a pair of shorts, nothing too special, but something flared up in your chest at the sight of her. Skin prickling, you whipped around and found Sanji not too far away. The cook took a drag of his cigarette, admiring eyes set on Nami. Your fangs peeked out of your lips, trilling a low hiss. Sanji choked and nearly dropped his cig into the sea, catching it betwixt his fingers at the last second.
Namiâs laughed gently, taking your arm and swinging one leg over the ailing, then the other. You gazed into her eyes deeply. âCâmon,â she smiled. âI thought we were swimming?â
With that, she jumped off the ship and plunged into the sea. You jerked forward, watching bubbles fizzle up from the deep before Namiâs head popped back into sight. She kicked into deeper water, calling for you. Taking a moment to sike yourself up, you stood precariously on the shipâs railing, preparing to make a graceful dive after herâwhen your foot slipped.
Yelping, you tottered offbalance and fell face first off the ship, just barely flipping around to land feet first in the water. The water fizzled and bubbled all around you, the usual sting of scales surfacing from the depths of your skin causing you to squirm slightly. Your senses enhanced instantly, so Namiâs rich, boisterous laughter flowed down from the air to the sea, embarrassment flooding your body. Slowly, you swam upward, water parting over your head and dripping donw your face.Â
Eyes hooded, you came to face to face with Namiâs state of hilarity, clutching her sides as she struggled to remain above water. You waded toward her, hands finding her sides and giving her a break from kicking even as your eyes avoided her own. She hooked her finger under your chin, grin cheeky. âI thought it was cute.â
âWasnât meant to be,â you grunted.Â
Nami rolled her eyes and kicked away form you. âI thought we were swimming?â
âNot here,â you said, coming back to your sense. You reached for her hand and led her along the coast. âThis way.â
You placed her arms around your neck and sped through the water, taking the pair of you far from the prying eyes of the crew and nearby sailors. Nami tucked her face into the crook of your neck, chuckling as seaspray stung her skin. Your tail propelled you toward a secluded cove you once visited with your auntâs migrant pod, and you reached your destination in no time at all.
Now, Nami had done her research. She knew what to expect⌠But then you actually started to swim, your tail not making the usual constant up an down movements. You took a deep breath, eyed her hopefully, and parted the water by arcing your arms outward. Using a single, powerful thrust of your tail, you glided through the water like a piercing arrow, rotating in a spiral corkscrew. You circled Nami, who treaded water with a confused furrow in her brow.Â
She had been picturing the Dance of Sea Hearts all day, and yet she hadnât come close.Â
Taking a breath, Nami gulped some air and ducked under the surface, flinging open her eyes. The salty water stung her eyes but she remained wide eyed, gaze trailing after your lithe curves and spirals. She caught your eye and the whole world seemed shifted all at once.
Suddenly pickiing up speed, you swam on your side round and round Nami, creating a current that spun Nami in a circle. Cheeks puffed of air, she went up for another bout of air and sank back down in one fluid motion. It was odd sort of dance, your fins brushing her skin and your hands tangling in her hair, taking her hands and spinning Nami in circles till the girlâs lack of oxygen and dizziness created a euphoric lightedheadness. But she trusted you, so she rose up for air and descended under the waves once more.Â
When you finally started to sing, Nami wasnât entirely sure she wanted to return to the surface. You were one person yet your voice sounded like a choir, echoes forming under the water and overwhelming every living creature in the vicinity with the beauty of your vocalizations. She remembered when she heard your people singing her crew to thier watery depths⌠and this was nothing like that. Their voices beckoned her forth with promises of jewels and safety of wealth⌠but you didnât promise anything other than the safety of your love.Â
Namiâs lips returned to the surface, sucking in as much air as she could. As the water closed around the crown of her head once more, you floated right in front of her, careful to not allow any enchantment into your voice. You wanted to do this right, not the way your people usually took the hearts of humans. Lips parted, you strung out your songâthe song your father sang to your mother, and her mother to her father, and his father to his partner, and so on.Â
The dazed look in Namiâs eyes was nearly concerning, and you nearly feared youâd let slip some magic, when her hands cupped your cheeks and her forehead collided with yours. Bubbles flew form your mouth, song halted instantly. Nami gave you a tilted grin, picking up the melody where youâd dropped it, and you were putty in her hands.Â
Deeper the pair of you sank into the waves, your arms enveloping her body and holding her close, your tail curling around her legs. Noses brushing, your voices twinned together as your smiles rose to greet each other. Nami tapped your arm rapidly, on the brink of suffocation, and you swiftly swam the both of you back to the surface.Â
Gasping in air, Nami curled her arms round your neck, lungs no longer straining under the power of the sea. âAre we, like, mermaid married now?â
You laughed awkwardly, nosing her cheek. âNot exactly⌠Do you understand what Iâm asking?â
âI do.â
âAnd?â
She pecked your lips. âI like you too.â
Though your heart threatened to sink, you accepted her kiss wholeheartedly, vowing to someday make her understand the depth of what you felt for her. The night grew long and full of laughter, splashing water hitting your faces as you committed a dance of your own making: having fun.
ZORO
Zoro knew the moment he laid eyes on you that you were dangerous.Â
With sharp fangs, fins that flared when angry, and the most hypnotizing eyes that made him feel things when he looked in themâyou were close to the myths he heard growing up on his home island. Except, unlike the myths, you were kind, and maybe thatâs what made it worse.
Zoro also knew something else the moment he saw you jump in the way of a sword strike from an oil miner and proceeded to tear him to shreds. With a mumbled curse and flushed face, he felt a thump in his heart as you heaved, dark eyes taking him in like you intended to devour him whole. But then you smiled, corners of your mouth curling to reveal shiny teeth that should have been threatening, and all he could think was a very firm shit.
He wasnât getting a crush on a mermaid.Â
Yet, he found his eyes always drifting to you one way or another. And that voiceâyou swore you never used your enchantments on anyone, finding it unethical, but you had to be doing something to him. Each morning you went up to the crows nest and sang a song. Zoro was able to name every single one by now, but heâd rather die than admit it.Â
(But you knew, having a keen eye to catch his eyes fluttering closed whilst you spun your melodies).
You composed yourself far better despite feeling a similar tug in his direction. You were a princess, after allâalbeit a feral sea princess, but you held poise nonetheless. Of course, that didnât change the fact that every time you laid eyes on Zoro you had this innate desire to bite him. Maybe then the cook would get the message and stop staring.
Either way, it was really only a matter of time before the culmination of looks, touches, and songs took its final toll on you both.Â
You sat with Robin on the steps leading up to the helm, you head propped in your hands, eyes unabashedly laid upon the swordsman training on the deck below. Robinâs eyes drifted up from her journal, flicking between you and the source of your admination, before shaking her head. âYou could talk to him, you know.â
Blinking, you glanced her way. âI do talk to him.â
âI mean,â Robin laughed. âTalk to him. About you and him.â
âOh no, I canât do that. It would complicate things.â
âAnd constantly undressing him with your eyes doesnât?â
You cast her a little glare. âDonât test me.â
Rolling her eyes, Robin shoved your shoulder, nearly sending you falling donw the stairs. âIâm sick of watching you two. Itâs sickening. Iâm sure I donât have to remind you of your own romantic customs?â
Cheeks burning, you stammered over incoherent words and wobbled to your feet. Pausing to breathe, you peered over your shoulder, losing yourself for a moment as you caught sight of the grace with which he moved. He moved on from lifting weights, instead going over his katas and form with sword, the Wado Ichimonji.Â
Robinâs chuckles brought you back to reality. Pouting, you gritted out, âShut up.â You whirled around and meant to march right up to Zoroâwhat you were going to say was the issue of future youâbut you walked head first into a broad chest and fell in a heap of limbs on the ground.Â
Zoroâs eyes went wide, motionless as you glared up at him only for your eyes to soften instantly. Zoro huffed a laugh and reached out his hand. You eagerly accepted his help, jumping back to your feet and falling right into your habit of admiring every detail in his face. Your surprisingly strong grip remained on his wrist, your eyes darting between the flesh of his arm to his chesnut eyes. Zoro frowned deeply, confused, trying to tug his hand away and reeling at how strong your vice was.Â
Blinking quickly out of your trance, you released him, stared blankly, and bolted below deck. Zoro watched carefully, having half a mind to call you back; heâd walked over to talk to you, after all. He liked talking to you (it was a shocking revelation he was still having trouble accepting).
Robin felt like an intruder on such moments, yet always found herself in the middle. She snapped shit her journal and Zoroâs head snapped in her direction, quickly darting his attention elsewhere. Robin let loose a sigh of exasperation.Â
âRidiculous.â Before Zoro could process whatever that meant, Robin was gone, leaving Zoro clutching his hand ot his chest and wondering why his skin crawled with the lingering sensation of your touch. He really couldnât take much more of this. And neither could the crew.
âEvery time they speak I feel like Iâm walking in on a hook up,â Nami complained to Sanji. âThey make asking about the weather feel sensual.â
Sanji chuckled to that. âPatience. Not everyone is as emotionally aware as you, darling.â
A week passed, and the usual brief glances and looks of longing exchanged readily. And then came the night of your watch. Everyone always knew when you had watch because you made it everyone elseâs problem the whole day. Groaning and grunting, you lamented your lost sleep, and the others usually chuckled behind their hands whilst you sighed.
Usually, you spent your watch alone, charting the stars to pass the time and singing old sea shanties to keep yourself awake. But tonight was different; tonight, someone joined you.
Zoroâs footsteps thunked against the deck, startling you from your daydream. Shoulders dropping, you sent him a smile and went back to leaning against the mast. âCanât sleep?â
âNope,â Zoro sighed. He followed you gaze to the night sky. âHave they moved?â
âHave theyâ?â You paused to stare at him, mirth glittering in your eyes. âHave the stars moved?â
He flushed from his neck to his nose, only worsening at the sight of your blue-moon smile. âYou knowâare there new ones? Constellations. Donât new ones appear when weâre in different areas?â
His frantic explanations only humored you more, dragging tiny chuckles out of you even as you nodded. âI know what you mean. Sorry for laughing⌠There are new ones. See there?â You sidled up to him and pointed to the left side of the sky. âThereâs the South Mother. I could never see her back at my reef.â
Zoroâs brows met. âSouth Mother?â
âI think you call her Ursa Major,â you explained. âTo us, sheâs our ancestor, banished to the stars for loving a human.â Realizing how close youâd drawn to him, you glanced at Zoro before swiftly clearing your throat and stepping away. The tranquil quiet filled the space between you, before the stories of your childhood rose to the surface of your memory.
âMy mother always told that story as a warning. Never deal with humans. They get you cast among the stars.â A tiny scoff left you, smile forming. âBut my father? He told me South Mother was a revolutionary. Why shouldnât she have loved a human? If she found one worth her time, then thatâs her choice.â
You chanced a look at Zoro, locking eyes with him. You found it in yourself to not look away. âI always liked my fatherâs version better.â
Zoro nodded tentatively, unsure what to say if he should say anything at all. He settled for sitting against the mast, motioning for you to join him. You dropped down quickly, taking a spot on his right and resting you head against the wood. Minutes went by in blissful silence.
âCan I bite you?â
The question caught him off guard, Zoro lurching up to stare at you. His jaw agape, he found your expression to be one of utter seriousness, blinking at him expectantly. His swallowed thickly. âIâIn what context?â
You shifted around to face him, waiting for him to do the same. âIn the context that I want to bite you so no one else does.â
Reeling, Zoro managed a laugh, lips curling upward. âI donât think you have to worry about anyone else biting me.â
âSo you donât want me to?â
âI didnât say that.â Gods, what was he doing? He lowered his gaze, watching your hands fidget nervously with your boot laces. You were nervous⌠Glancing up, he saw that same nervous energy swarming your face. âCan I ask why youâre worried someone else will bite me?â
You thought back to your conversation with Robin, and her advice, and regretted ever bringing any of this up in the first place. It was all so stupid. Youâd done so well of pushing all of this down⌠but he was waiting for an answer, and youâre quite certain youâd give Zoro anything he wanted.
âIn my culture,â you started, âwe bite those we⌠feel things for. It lets others know theyâre talking with someone.â
Zoro understood what you actually wanted to say, no matter how hidden in your words it was. âAnd you want to talk with me?â
You wanted so much more than that. Honestly, you were clinging to your composure. Heâs lucky you even asked first. âYes. I do. And I donât want you⌠talking to anyone else.â
Squinting at the space over Zoroâs shoulder, you awaited the blow of rejection. Surely, Zoro had other options. He was a warriorâstrong, wise under all that moss on his head, and kind. Yet slowly, Zoro moved into your line of sight. His heart thundered around in his ribcage, his next sentence feeling silly, yet true.Â
âHumans do something similar,â he offered. âYou bite me⌠and Iâll bite you.â
You hadnât expected to get this far. Nodding gently, you threw caution to the wind along with all the pretense. âAll that is to say⌠I⌠Well, I understand the South Mother because I met you.â
Zoroâs gaze softened, his hands drawing you closer till his exhale fanned your face. You knelt before each other, a single question in his eyes, to which you nod and lean in if only to be near him. His hand cradled the back of your head, lips dancing across the skin of your neck, finding the spot that made you squirm and biting. Zoro had no fangs to sink into your flesh but it hardly made a difference; the mark was there, along with several others littered along your shoulder.
Letting out a shaky breath you gripped Zoroâs jaw before he could go any further and brought his face level with yours. Running your tongue over your two jutting fangs, you muttered, âWhere?â
Zoro craned his neck to the side, his breathing heavy and pupils consuming his irises. You gently traced the line of his jaw, completely enamored, before latching onto the skin where his neck met his collarbone. Careful to not wound him, you bit down just enough to leave your mark. Zoroâs slight hiss had you soothing your tongue over the mark, remembering the feel of his lips on your skin, and copied his earlier ministrations. Zoro would deny it over and over, but he whined, and you would take that knowledge to your watery grave.
Come morning, imagine the crewâs surprise walking into the galley expecting the usual dance of awkward feelings, only to find the pair of you thick as thieves showing off the fresh territorial markings splayed across your necks.Â
Zoro rolled over when you were five feet away from his hammock, shrouded in the midday darkness heâd sought in the storage room. Itâs no wonder he jerked up and nearly fell out. âShit, donât do that!â
Everyone else worked through various activities around the ship, the sweltering heat making some deck work miserable, but the whole crew contented themselves to a slow day at sea. Yet, you stood here, eyes slightly wide and stare greatly troubled. Zoro leaned up in his hammock, swaying it gently, and flitted his eyes all over you. You werenât harmed by the look of you, so it had to be something different.Â
Zoro was good at dealing with physical things. Like swords, wounds, and annoying cooks. You presented a challenge; you brought him immaterial emotions and ideas, rewriting the way he viewed the world till he was somehow visibly softer. Nami pointed it out to you one low-lit night, noticing how Zoro didnât bite back at Sanji as muchâhe knew it upset you when he did.
So he parted his lips and closed them sharply, unsure what to do with you. From the way you stood frozen just out of arms reach, breathing carefully caught, he figured you were much the same. Zoro blinked away sleep and rubbed at his jaw.Â
âSomething wrong?â
Instantly, you recoiled, laughing. âNah. Sorry I woke you, I didnât see youâre asleep.â
Now he knew for certain you were lying. You and Zoro had been on that crew together long enough for you to know his shitty sleep schedule. He cocked his head. âWanna try again?â
âNo.â You rolled your eyes. âYouâre very brazen, you know.â
âAnd you came here for a reason,â Zoro turned it around, not bothering to ask whatever brazen meant. Later heâd skim the dictionary heâd bought just to keep up with your vast vocabulary. âSo, what is it?â
Cold closed off your expression from him, foot inching backward, tiny murmurs of stupid slipping between your lips. Zoro huffed and lunged out for you, his hand catching the cloth of your shirt and yanking you back to him. You yelped, teetering on your toes, twisting around to catch yourselfâyour right hand hit Zoroâs chest and your left dipped into the hammock, your legs crossed and twisty. Zoro still gripped your shirt, inhale sharp and touch featherlight.Â
âI know Iâm⌠brazen,â he grunted. âBut you can talk to me. You always have talked to me, so whatâs the matter now?â
Chest tight, a dull ache spread from your heart to your arms and legs, up your neck and welling in your eyes. You let slip a shallow breath, a single look enough to express yourself to him. Zoroâs arms reached around your torso, righting you before hooking a hand under your thigh and heaving you into the hammock with him. You couldnât focus on the awkward position of being on his lap, not when Zoroâs specific kind of unspoken comfort met you readily.
You slipped into his embrace flawlessly, as though youâd lain clutching him in a hammock a thousand times. His hand drew circles on your back, his eyes wide and afraidâtears started to dampen his chest, and he didnât care at all about that, but Zoro did care about you.
And right now you needed silent comfort, and that he could give you, if nothing else. Zoro never spoke a word, hearing how your labored breathing slowed to something akin to regulated. When you felt ready, you raised your head from being buried in his chest and told him what ailed you. Zoro hung on every single word.Â
âIt feels superficial to say,â Zoro whispered, reaching to swipe a strand of hair out of your face. âBut I think itâll be okay. Maybe not now, but eventually.â
Relaxed with your legs resting between both of his, your hands folded atop his chest and your chin settled there, you nodded softly. You met his gaze suddenly, gathering your nerve to lean up and press a tender, lingering kiss on the corner of his mouth. You pulled back enough to say, âThank you.â
Zoroâs hand raked into your hair and drew you back in, capturing your lips against his in the hope that all his yearning, devotion, and appreciation could become tangible in your hands. He dealt with physical things, and you dealed in the unspoken; yet that stark divide felt bridged then and there in that little hammock.

summary. zoro doesnât necessarily like you. but to his surprise, an improvised and unplanned escape plan makes him realise that⌠it may not be entirely trueâŚ?
the sun is warming your face pleasantly as you stroll around the market, the sweet smell of fresh fruits filling your nostrils. you hum and when your eyesight falls upon the stall with strawberries, you let out a gasp.
âletâs get them too!â you yelp in excitement and walk to the seller. zoro moves his feet lazily, hand still secured atop of his sword.
he didnât understand why luffy sent you and him to get some food that sanji wanted. the damn waiter couldâve done so himself, heâd know what to choose.
but no. heâs here with your pretty self, sun prying his skin. heâd love a nap right now and notâ
âhere, try it! itâs so sweet, oh myâŚâ you hum in delight and before he can protest, youâre shoving a fresh strawberry into his mouth.
zoro groans. itâs good, heâll admit.
âdo we need them?â his brows moved up, scanning you. you bit your lower lip in thought, causing his stomach to make a flip.
this strange feeling accompanied him for a while now. he always felt so⌠dizzy but in a pleasant way when he was with you. at first he thought heâs sick but he didnât even have a high temperature.
the thing is, youâre cutely annoying. you talk a lot, you smile all the time, you like sweet things â literally. it pisses zoro off but then again, he feels all warm inside when he gets to hear your laugh.
âplease?â you ask, pouting.
he shifts his hands, the groceries you made him carry making a rustling noise.
his brows furrow, thereâs a long silence.
âfineâ he groans, not entirely sure why he caved in.
so while you pay, he glares at the elderly sellsman whoâs looking at you two strangely.
he recognised you.
âthank you so much! have a greatââ you start, the small basket of strawberries in your hands. zoro placed a hand on your shoulder and moved you further, urging you to walk âhey! i didnât get to finish!â
âwe need to goâ he huffs and starts to look around to find a way back to going merry. which, at a crowded market and considering his skills, may be difficult.
âwhy?â you whine yet follow him obediently âthereâs so much stuff i wanna seeâŚâ
you get your answer when the sound of coordinated and synchronised steps reaches your ears. marines.
âexactlyâ zoro scans your expression and his hand slips from your arm to your wrist. the hold is gentle though, almost as if afraid heâll hurt you.
âthe way out is the other way, i thinkâ you announce and he stops suddenly, causing you to bump into his back. the swordâs handle meets with your forehead, causing you to groan âlet me lead, you get lost way too easilyâ
he sighs but yet again today, gives in. you turn on your heel and start to lead him the way back, walking quickly through the various stands.
âthey went that way!â
zoro is ready to grab his swords, noticing how the old man who sold you the strawberries is pointing at the place where you stood mere moments ago. the roofs of the stalls donât do justice, youâre way too exposed.
âoh my god, a kitty!â you yelp and suddenly squat down, forgetting that zoro is holding onto you. if not his quick reflexes, heâd be facing the ground (literally)
ây/n, what are youââ he hisses. another con of yours â getting distracted way too easily. especially by cute things.
âzoro, look! itâs so cute!â you whine and pet the small brown-furred feline. the cat is purring happily, naturally being pulled into your embrace âcan we keep it?â
ânoâ zoro huffs, peeking from the stall you were squatting behind. the marines were still looking around
âwhy though? itâs so adorable! we would have another crewmateâ a plea leaves your mouth, puppy eyes looking at him. zoroâs heart skips a beat and makes a somersault yet his face remains stone-cold, unbothered.
âno. we need to go and thereâs no time for suchâŚâ his voice dies in his throat as the kitty brushed its head against your leg. the small tail cutely presses against your skin, the feline letting out the quietest meow possible.
âi love him so much, heâs adorableâ you mumble, scratching its soft fur behind its ear âweâre gonna name him alfredââ
âweâre not naming this thing alfred. besides, weââ he starts, interrupted by a sneeze out of the blue.
âis there a cat?â
you look at zoro with wide eyes, pure of shock and fear. the cat is still snuggling onto you, plopping into its back and showing its stomach â clearly requiring more scratches. while you continue eavesdroping, your hand gently grabs his and moves it to the catâs belly.
zoro shots you an âannoyedâ stare but moves his fingers hesitantly nevertheless. the warmth of your touch spreads through his body.
âiâm allergic! we should go, iâll be all swollen in no time! theyâre not here, the old man maybe has some sight problemsâ
the green haired male shifts his gaze to you.
âare they gone?â you whisper, smiling softly at the cat.
âmhmâ he hums, somewhat in disbelief.
âsee? this was a purrfect escape plan!â you grin and you two begin to stand up. when getting no response, you chuckle nervously âget it? purr because the kittyââ
âi got itâ zoro whispers, grabbing the groceries you made âletâs goâ
âwhat about alfred?â you pout, looking at the kitty.
âthereâs no living conditions on going merry for a cat, y/nâ zoro says, sounding a bit apologetic.
you sigh and give the cat a last behind-ear scratch.
and zoro grunts, the weird warm feeling overflowing his body again. he can feel his stomach feeling a bit dizzy but in a pleasant way.
god, if he could he would give you every cat in the world if that meant seeing you so happy like moments ago.

Part 1, Part 2, Master List
Miles Cooper was still at school the following week, which meant that he was given no consequences for what had happened to you or for blaming Eddie.Â
Eddie couldnât even say he was surprised by this point. If Eddie really had been the one to trip you up, he was sure heâd get suspended or even expelled. It was so close to the end of the year and he could feel that Higgins was looking for any reason to keep him from walking across that stage to get his diploma.Â
You hadnât shown up on Monday. Not that it mattered to Eddie either way, you two didnât even know each other. But you had cleared his name. That was the thought that kept buzzing around his brain like a mosquito that he just couldnât swat. Despite the glares and the snide remarks, you had gone out of your way to make sure that he didnât get in trouble for something he didnât do, which is more than what he could say for a lot of people at this school.
He had to give you credit for that at least. Not many people outside of his small friend circle would stick up for him like that.Â
With work and band practice, it was easy to forget about you until Wednesday when you showed up to English class with a thick white cast around your wrist and arm. Shit, your fall really had done a number on you. You were struggling with juggling your books and they fell off your desk with a clatter, and you thanked the girl next to you for helping you pick them up.Â
Eddie would like to think he was above eavesdropping and gossip, but heâd be wrong.Â
âWhat happened?â The girl- Sarah- asked.Â
âI face planted on the bleachers at the pep rally.â you said, taking your seat again. âOne minute I was trying to get down, and the next Iâm getting elbowed and my arm hurt.âÂ
âI heard someone pushed youâÂ
Eddie heard that emphasis on someone and gripped his pencil, hearing the subtle sound of wood splintering against his thumb. This was not the time to make a scene.Â
âNo one pushed me. Miles elbowed me and I fell.â you said firmly.Â
You were still defending him, Eddie wasnât sure how to feel.Â
âIf youâre gonna spread rumors, could you do me a favor and make it sound more interesting?â You continued, âLike, start telling people that I dived off the bleachers to distract everyone that Miles shit himself.â
Eddie snorted loudly before he could stop himself. He slammed his hand pencil down on the table and covered his mouth. Dammit, why did you have to be funny?
Sarah laughed, much less obnoxiously and agreed before asking to sign your cast. You must be covered in signatures now, as you seemed to be friends with everyone.Â
Everyone except him.Â
Not that it mattered.Â
It was nice and all that you saved him from getting in trouble, but itâs not like you two were ever going to be friends, no matter how funny you were.Â
Class started and Eddie spent the rest of class doodling and barely paying attention to the teacher. This was usually how his school days went. Yeah, he had been trying harder in the past two years to graduate and pass his classes but some days his brain just refused to focus on anything important.Â
The bell rang and Eddie took his sweet time getting his things together. Next period was his favorite- lunch.Â
âShit.â He heard you mumble as you tried to wrangle your books with one arm. He knew there was a rule about not being allowed to carry around a backpack but, shit, Eddie would have thought youâd get some help. Shouldnât one of those many signatures be offering to carry your books?Â
Obviously not, as you finally managed to tuck your notebook under your arm. You looked flustered, and hot in the face. Your brows were furrowed in concentration and you finally let out a loud groan as your papers went flying everywhere as students for the next class started coming in.Â
It was pathetic, and Eddie couldnât exactly leave you stranded. You cleared his name, so at least he could try and help you out right now. Maybe heâd even figure out what your problem with him was.Â
âHere.â Eddie said and grabbed the papers closest to him and picked up your binder before you could stop him.Â
Normally when Eddie looked at you, youâd turn your nose up at him and look away. This time, he found himself giving you direct eye contact. Your eyes were wide with surprise that he had stepped in to help, followed by more frustration.Â
âThanks.â you said shortly.Â
âNeed help getting to the lunch room?â Eddie asked. Heâd wait for you to say no, to tell him to get out of your face, and he can walk away with a clear conscience that at least he tried.Â
You were staring at him as if he were some sort of alien who had just asked you why the sky wasnât orange. Yeah ok, he could take the hint.Â
âYes.âÂ
The word sounded choked out, as if the single syllable was a struggle to say. But you had said it, and Eddie was a man of his word, even though he hadnât promised you anything.Â
Eddie stacked your notebook and binder on top of his. You were still staring at him as if you couldnât believe he was talking to you. Eddie couldnât really believe it himself.Â
Heâd do this small favor for you as a thanks, and then you two could go back to ignoring each other.Â
âLead the way.â He said, offering up his best impression of his dadâs smile. If he was lucky (which Eddie never was) then maybe some of his dadâs Munson Magic might rub off on him enough so that youâd at least relax a little.Â
You only nodded and led him out of the classroom.Â
You didnât like the cast and itâs off-putting stark white bandages. You wanted to choose a different color- maybe red or black or even that weird obnoxious toxic green that was offered to you. But your mom decided that white would be better because it would make it easier to sign, so white it was.Â
Your parents at least took pity on you Monday, letting you stay home to wallow in embarrassment that you had broken your wrist and fractured your arm in front of all of your classmates. Tuesday they released you back to school, but you had instead skipped getting on the bus (because you could not drive one-handed) and played hooky at the local library. Itâs not like anyone would care that someone your age was skipping school.Â
Wednesday came, and you forced yourself onto the bus, the first time you had used it since moving to Hawkins. The ride was bumpy and long, and your walkman ran out of batteries halfway to school.Â
It wasnât as bad as you thought it would be. A few people came up and signed your cast, some asking what happened. You just told them the same thing, that Miles elbowed you and you fell. It wasnât as exciting as the idea of the school Freak attacking you, but you werenât about to get Eddie involved in something that he had nothing to do with. You were just going to ignore the fact that Eddie had been the reason you were heading in that direction anyway.Â
English class rolled around, and you spent most of it poking the inside of your cast with your pencil, trying to scratch an itch that just wouldnât go away. It was bad enough that you had fucked up your dominant arm, but this was actually Hell.Â
When the bell rang, everyone else seemed to be in a huge rush to get out of the classroom. Everyone but Eddie. Obviously. Because of course the one person you were trying to avoid was now slinking around you.Â
Your long weekend, you had done your best to try and not think about him. You could handle falling in front of everyone else in school, but with Eddie it was different. Your stomach twisted as you remembered how he had yelled as you fell next to him and how he had looked at you as you had ignored your stinging arm as you ran out of the gym to clear his name.Â
It was bad enough he had heard you make a poor joke out of context, you werenât going to throw him under the bus either.Â
âNeed help getting to the lunch room?â
Your face was already hot with the embarrassment of not being able to carry your own books. Your backpack had ripped the second you got off the bus, and you lost your math homework to a puddle. You hated that he was still here to begin with, was breaking your wrist already not enough pain and suffering?Â
You were staring at him. Fuck- dammit- shit say something back-
âYes.âÂ
The word almost got stuck in your throat. The only reason it came out was that as painful and embarrassing as this moment was, what Stacy would do to you if she found out you said no would be far worse.Â
Eddie dropped your books on top of his, and gave you a smile that looked so forced that you couldnât stand to look at him. Was this being done just out of pity? Youâd run for the hills if he wasnât holding you binder hostage.Â
You led him through the hallway, and towards your locker. âI need to put some things up.â you said, and he followed you.Â
The hallway was already mostly clear, and so no one seemed to pay you much mind. You werenât sure what the rumor mill would churn out with Eddie carrying your books, but did it even matter? Two more months and youâd be out of this school and none of these people would matter.Â
No one except the young man following behind you.Â
Eddie dutifully held your books as you put them away. The door to your locker stopped you from seeing his face, which seemed like the perfect time to take the foot out of your mouth that had been there since the pep rally.Â
â...Iâm... uh... Iâm sorry for what I said on Friday.â you started, pretending to rifle through a folder. âAbout you being in a cult. It was a stupid joke and I shouldnât have said it.â
Eddie was quiet for a moment, and you felt your whole body tense up as you waited for him to say anything.Â
âYeah we uh.. We arenât big on sacrificing in Hellfire.â he said carefully. âHad to stop that with the club budget cuts.âÂ
You had to bite the inside of your cheek and close your eyes tight to keep from laughing. You covered it up with a cough. âYeah uh... sounds like thatâd be a lot of paperwork.âÂ
You took a slow and deep breath before closing your locker to look at him. He was smiling at you, a far less forced one than before. It was almost the same smile he gave his friends when he didnât know you were looking.Â
It wasnât much, but it didnât stop the butterflies from exploding in your chest. You should see a doctor about that.Â
âOh yeah, tons.â Eddie said. âAnd with all the letters we get about our club being associated with the Devil it was just a bureaucratic headache.â
I know that if I could just talk to him one then Iâd be fine. You had told yourself that every single day since these pesky little feelings emerged. Maybe you had been right. The two of you made your way to the cafeteria.Â
âYouâre just some nerds playing with dice.â you said, and realize that could be taken the wrong way. âNot that thereâs anything wrong with that. Iâve also... played board games.âÂ
God you were acting like a total airhead. Board games? Really? You were acting like your brain was broken rather than your wrist.Â
You felt Eddieâs eyes on you, and saw how he also looked unsure about your answer. Whatever was going through his head, he brushed aside.Â
âI should also thank you for clearing my name.â he said, changing the subject. âYou came running out of the gym and saved my ass.âÂ
âI wasnât going to let someone get in trouble just because I fell!â It was the most assured thing you had ever said to Eddie.
âWell, either way Iâd say youâre my hero.â Eddie said. âIâm pretty sure if you hadnât come running to my rescue Iâd probably be expelled by now, and then who would be around to corrupt the youth of Hawkins?âÂ
Hero. Eddie called you his hero. You felt your body buzzing with an energy that you were not in a place to use.Â
You two were in the cafeteria now, and you led Eddie over to where Stacy was sitting. Stacy, being the queen of subtlety that she was, was openly gawking at the sight of the two of you together.Â
She was giving you a look, and that look said that the second that Eddie was out of earshot you would be giving her a play by play of every single second of this interaction.Â
Eddie dropped your books on the table by Stacy.
âHi, Eddie!â she said in a perky voice. You wanted to kick her, and shot her a warning look which she ignored. âWill you be dining with us today?âÂ
You wanted to rip your hair out.Â
âAs much as I would love to spend my lunch period with you two ladies, Iâm afraid my freshmen wouldnât survive out there in the wild without me.â Eddie gave a dramatic bow.Â
âThank you. For helping me.â you said stiffly. Being on the receiving end of Eddieâs theatrics was making your brain blow a fuse.Â
Eddie gave you a nod and sauntered off to his usual table where he was immediately hounded by his friends for being seen with you. You wondered what they were thinking. Did you look weird next to Eddie? Were they judging you for not being part of their group?
âStop drooling.â Stacy said. âTalk.â
I have never broken a bone and have done minimal googling.
Also these chapters are getting longer dammit. This is supposed to be the easy stuff to wright UGH. Also tell me if there's something you wanna see with this, because I'm winging it like I do with all my writing lol

Part 1
School assemblies were fun in their own way. You werenât exactly brimming with school spirit but you could fake it for a half-hour when it got you out of your History class. Everyone was ushered into the gym at the end of the day to celebrate the sport season. You had no idea if the Hawkinâs Tigers were good or not, you could really only name two and a half people on the basketball team: Jason Carver, who you unfortunately had shared a free period with once, Lucas Sinclair, who you had seen talking to Eddie once in a blue moon, and Steve Harrington who had graduated, so he didnât really count. You vaguely remembered working with him on some school project for two days and thinking that you just wanted to squish his hair down to see if it would spring back up.Â
Stacy bounded over to you in the bleachers, decked out in more Tigerâs Green than a leprechaun. She shook the scrunchy out of her hair and slipped it onto your wrist. You sometimes wondered how she never became a cheerleader with how perky she was.
âThere, now you look like you tried.â she giggled, nudging you.Â
âI was gonna scribble on my face with a green dry erase marker, but Mr. Thompsonâs had run dry.â You said.Â
âHe was probably lying so you wouldnât steal one and huff it in the bathroom.âÂ
âHey, that was one time and 4th grade math was hard.â you cackled.Â
âSpeaking of hard drugs, look who decided to actually show up.â Stacy smirked and your stomach instantly dropped as you followed her gaze.Â
âWhat the fuck is Eddie doing here?â you whispered to Stacy. âHe doesnât do pep rallies!â
âGuess he does now.â she shrugged.Â
Eddie was a few rows lower than you, leaning against the end railing of the bleachers. You vaguely wondered if he was burning up in that leather jacket, it wasnât exactly cool in the gym with so many bodies all squished together.Â
He was alone, looking like heâd rather be literally anywhere else. You didnât blame him, this clearly wasnât a place where he fit in. You looked down the bleachers in the opposite direction, unable to pick out any of his friends. During pep rallies, the bleachers were divided by grade, with Seniors on your end of the bleachers, and freshmen on the opposite end. Maybe Eddie was pressing himself against the railing to create his own section of Super Seniors.Â
If he was anyone else, youâd join him in that section, but you kept that knowledge to yourself.Â
âHe looks lonely, go talk to him before they start.â Stacy encouraged.Â
âPlease, I doubt heâd want to talk to me at any other time. You think he wants to talk to me now?â you asked incredulously.Â
âWhatâs the worst that could happen?âÂ
âHe could convince me to join a cult and then sacrifice me to the dark forces.â you said, looking over at him. Well, it wouldnât be the worst thing in the world.Â
Eddieâs head snapped up and he whirled around. Out of everyone around, his eyes immediately locked onto yours.Â
Oh shit.
He heard that.Â
His round brown eyes sized you up, and you cringed out of embarrassment for your stupid joke. You felt like a deer in the headlights. Eddie was looking at you, really looking at you for the first time and you were about two seconds away from jumping off the back of the bleachers and tunneling your way out of the school.Â
Next to you, you could practically feel Stacy shaking as she tried to hold in her laughter, which unfortunately, triggered your own set of nervous giggling because this whole thing was so stupid and Eddie was still looking at you.Â
He looked unimpressed, and flipped you off before turning back around to sulk against the railing again as the band suddenly started up, and everyone started cheering for the team.Â
âGotta say, I am nailing this, Stacy.â You laughed, leaning against her shoulder. âPractically had the boy swooning.â
âYeah, heâll be asking you out any day now.â She rubbed your back sympathetically.Â
âI canât believe he heard me. He totally thought I was being serious.â Your giggles finally subsided and you looked up at her.Â
âIt would be very easy to clear this up, if youâd just talk to him.â She said.Â
âI donât like it when youâre rational, you know.â you replied and glanced at him again. Eddie was no longer looking at you and was just fiddling with his rings as he watched boredly as Principal Higgens was giving announcements.Â
You had to apologize. The last thing you wanted was for Eddie to think that you were really like that. You didnât buy into the bullshit that some dice and graph paper could damn your soul to hell.Â
âFuck it, Iâm going in.â you said, and turned to head towards Eddie.Â
âGo get âem, Tiger!âÂ
You made your way to the edge of the bleachers, and three things happened in quick succession. First, Miles Cooper got overly enthusiastic as you passed by him, and his elbow made a quick and sharp connection to your stomach, knocking the wind out of you. The second thing that happened was a stray backpack got kicked right in front of you as you staggered from the shock of being elbowed. The third and final thing was you falling down the two benches of bleachers that separated you and Eddie.Â
âYou can either go to the pep rally and act like you are a part of this school, or you can have detention, Mr. Munson. The choice is yours.âÂ
Normally, no one gave a shit if Eddie skipped out on something like a pep rally. That time was better spent either reading in an empty classroom or as a smoke break in the parking lot. He had just made it out to the parking lot before he was spotted and given the option. Eddie had been good about not skipping class this year, but he really didnât want to give Higgins another reason to threaten to withhold his diploma.Â
So there he was, leaning against the railing of the furthest bleachers so that the second the pep rally ended, he could just book it back to the van and leave to.. Somewhere. Uncle Wayne had work, and Eddie didnât have a shift at the Hideout. There was no Hellfire today.Â
Eddie was feeling restless as he fidgeted with his rings. Today had already been annoying and he really just wanted to sneak out to his van and have a smoke. Itâs not like anyone here would miss him, theyâd probably celebrate his departure more than the entrance to the basketball team.Â
He looked down at his hands, taking his rings off and rearranging them on his fingers. He tapped them on the railing, listening to the sounds they made as he counted the seconds for this whole thing to be over.Â
As his mind started to wander off, a voice snapped him back to the hell he was currently in. â-join a cult and sacrifice me to the dark forces.âÂ
It was always obvious when someone was talking about Eddie. Normally heâd let it go and ignore whoever it was, but he wasnât exactly in the best of moods today. His head whipped around, looking for whoever was talking about him.Â
There you were with Stacy, again. Eddie wished he could be surprised, but he wasnât. His eyes narrowed as he looked you over. You werenât dressed in anything that screamed âschool spiritâ except for a scrunchie around your wrist.Â
He saw how you cringed at the sight of him, which only pissed him off more. What was your fucking problem? You were friends with Stacy, who had been on the cheer squad before her ankle gave out, the skaters liked, you liked everyone. Everyone who wasnât Eddie Munson.Â
Eddie had wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, that maybe the two of you just hadnât crossed paths enough. Maybe it wasnât personal. But now, after hearing you say that you also thought he was some sort of demon worshiping freak he was fine to write you off as just another Hawkins student. Maybe then he could finally move past this weird feeling he had whenever you gave him the stink eye.Â
Stacy started giggling next to you, and Eddie just rolled his eyes and turned away. It wasnât worth it to start anything now at the pep rally. He was already on thin ice after being caught trying to skip. The sooner this was over the better.Â
His attention drifted as Higgins droned on and on about school spirit and upcoming fundraisers and games. It was all background noise. In his mind, Eddie was working out the next dungeon that Hellfire was going to take on. His party was getting too used to his usual tricks, so heâd have to pull out something new to really throw them off-
There was a choked off gasp.Â
Then a curse.Â
Then a horrible cracking sound as something fell next to him.
âJesus-!â Eddie jumped nearly a foot in the air as you hit the bleacher next to him. His eye nearly bugged out as he saw you sprawled next to him, clutching your stomach and gasping for air like a fish.Â
Everyone in the section was still as they all stared at you, before a few started to snicker. Stacy was quick to jump down with far more grace and land by your side. Eddie was completely frozen, unsure of what to do until he heard Miles Cooper say-Â
âIt was Munson! He did it!â
Eddieâs head snapped to Miles, about to say something before a teacher sharply demanded the Eddie get off the bleachers and come down for what was sure to be a one-sided lecture and detention for something he didnât do.Â
He didnât fight it, he was about to argue and cause a scene right now in the bleachers. Not when that teacher had a fire in her eyes that said she was just itching for trouble. Fine, he wanted to be as far away from this as possible.Â
Eddie walked down the bleachers and followed the teacher out into the hallway. He was already tuning out the lecture about watching your body and not hitting girls. This was such bullshit, and he knew he couldnât even fight back and defend himself.Â
âLook, I didnât touch her!â Eddie couldnât stop the frustration in his voice. âShe was behind me when she fell!â
âWitnesses say otherwise.â The teacher crossed her arms.Â
âLook, just because that dumbass said it was true-âÂ
There was a loud CLANK as the heavy doors to the gym burst open and to Eddieâs surprise, you were rushing through the door, holding onto your arm.Â
You made a beeline for him and the teacher and Eddie could already see it now. Your fake tears as you cried about how the freak shoved you down for no reason-
âDidnât... do it.â you were shaking your head and panting hard. With your free hand you were pointing at Eddie. âHe didnât... he didnât do anything... Miles elbowed me. Then I tripped. Eddie never.... Touched me.âÂ
Stacy was behind you and grabbed your shoulders, trying to hold you in place. âEddie didnât do anything, Mrs. Jane.â she explained. âShe was just trying to go get some water and ate shit. Eddie had nothing to do with it.â
You nodded, still panting hard as if trying to catch your breath. Stacy was rubbing your back, and you looked like you were on the verge of tears.Â
Eddie felt like he had just stepped into an alternate timeline. You were actually defending him? You were in that much pain but had still come running to claim his innocence?Â
Mrs. Jane looked at you with concern. âEddie, you may go back to the pep rally.â She dismissed him without so much as an apology for chewing him out.Â
Fuck this. Eddie didnât need to be told twice. He made his way back towards the gym, but slipped into a side hall. The pep rally was going to be over soon anyway, he might as well beat traffic.Â
He paused just as he was out of sight. Fine, he was a little nosey and mildly concerned as you had just come to his rescue.Â
âI... I think I hurt my arm.â you said, and he could hear the real pain in your voice.Â
âIâll take her to the nurse.â Stacy said.Â
Eddie heard the sound of footsteps, and quickly slipped out of the school before Mrs. Jane caught him escaping.Â
Yeah, he was going to need something stronger than a cigarette after this.Â
I really didn't think the original blurb would get much attention lol

Youâre staring at him again from across the cafeteria. Eddie Munson is laughing loudly with his friends at their usual table near the windows. Your heart jumps into your chest every time you catch a snippet of their conversation. You arenât trying to eavesdrop- okay maybe you are a little. But, they make it so easy! Eddieâs voice carries and you know that if people werenât as judgemental then the drama department would be begging for his theatrics.Â
Whatever theyâre talking about over there, they look happy. Eddie was currently leaning over the table and was in one of his friends faces, but he was smiling maniacally as far as you could tell. You wanted to know so badly what they were saying, what it was that made Eddie smile so wide. Could you ever make him smile like that?Â
Someone waves a hand in front of you and you snap out of it and look over at your friend, Stacy.Â
âAre you gonna keep staring at him, or are you going to talk to him?â She asked, as she had at least once a week since the school year started.Â
âTalk to who?â you replied, smiling at her.Â
âYou canât keep pretending he doesnât exist if you keep staring at him like the sun shines out of his ass.â She looked over at Eddieâs table where one of the freshmen had burped so loud even other tables were looking over. Eddie high fived the kid, and then discarded his jacket.Â
He was wearing an Iron Maiden shirt that looked almost new-ish. You wished that Eddie was anyone else. Literally anyone else. If he was youâd be able to walk over to him, strike up a conversation about the band, ask him what his favorite song was. Talking to people was easy, but according to Hawkinâs High, Eddie Munson was no person.Â
âOh I can, and I will.â you said, and quickly looked at Stacy as Eddieâs head suddenly swung in your direction. You didnât even think he was looking at you but having him looking anywhere near your general vicinity was far too much to handle so you looked down at your lunch instead. Pathetic.Â
Stacy frowned and looked at you. âGo talk to him.â she said.Â
âNo.â
âIâm serious.â
âSo am I. Absolutely not. What would I even say?âÂ
âYou came up to me on the second day of school and started the conversation by asking if Iâd rather fight a horse sized duck or a duck sized horse.âÂ
âItâs a good icebreaker!âÂ
Stacy all but shoved you out of your seat. âIf I have to keep watching you make goo goo eyes at the freak, Iâm going to barf. Just talk to him already!âÂ
You grabbed onto your sandwich wrapper in a feeble attempt to stop your ass from hitting the ground. It didnât work. You groaned and stood up, glaring at your friend who shooed you off with her hands before returning to her own lunch. You flicked her off. She flicked you off back.Â
You turned around and took a deep breath, clutching your trash so hard your knuckles almost turned white. Your brows furrowed and with shaking legs you started walking towards his table. Thatâs it, just one foot in front of the other. Just go over, say hi, tell him you like his shirt.Â
Itâs just small talk. Itâs introducing yourself. Itâs not like youâre about to go over and ask him on a date out of the blue! Thatâd be weird. You just had to walk the additional 30 steps to his table.Â
You could hear his voice and you couldnât tell if butterflies were fluttering around in your stomach or if you were going to be sick. Why, out of everyone in school, did you have to develop a crush on Eddie Munson? He was loud and chaotic and had a habit of getting into fights and rumor had it that he was in a shootout once, but no one could agree on the details. But he was also funny, and clearly so protective of his friends and his club, and you sat diagonally behind him in English and you practically swooned any time he was called to read because he was one of the few who would actually put in effort-
He was looking at you. Fuck fuck fuck fuck. Eddie Munson was looking directly at you as you walked towards his table. His brown eyes were curious but guarded, and becoming more guarded the closer you got to his table.Â
You swerved around him and walked to the trash can that was stationed near the table and tossed your sandwich wrapper inside. You started walking back to your table, defeated, knowing that Stacy was going to just shake her head and talk about weekend plans instead. Maybe talking to him was too much to start with. Maybe a casual head nod or making purposeful eye contact would be better-
Someone grabbed your shirt as you passed by Eddieâs table making you jump and turn around in surprise.Â
âHey, sorry I forgot your name.â Zack, the kid in your science class quickly let go of your shirt, putting his hands up to show he didnât mean any harm.Â
You offered your hand and told him. âCan I help you...?â
âOh yeah, I just got warned we have a pop quiz today.â He said. âYou gave me that extra quarter last week when the phone ate mine. I figured Iâd warn you.â
You felt yourself relaxing and you smiled. âYeah, okay thanks.â you said genuinely. âI wasnât exactly gonna leave you stranded over a quarter.â
âYou saved my ass from having to walk home.â Zack sighed. âI still havenât fixed my wheel on my board.âÂ
âHope you get it fixed soon, and thanks for the heads up.â you said, and waved as you headed back to your table with Stacy.Â
âHow did I tell you âgo talk to Eddieâ and you heard âmake small talk with the skatersâ?â she asked as you sat down.Â
You groaned and shook your head. âI know, I know. I chickened out. He was looking at me, Stace. I panicked!â
âYouâre hopeless.â she sighed.Â
âYouâre right.â
Hendersonâs belch was the stuff of legends as Eddie cackled and high fived the kid. The sound had echoed through the cafeteria so loudly that other tables were looking at the freaks with either disgust or amusement.Â
It had been a good day for Eddie so far, all things considered. Higgins hadnât tried to pull him into the office, the jocks had been ignoring him, and he had actually turned in his homework today. Small victories, but victories nonetheless.Â
But as the reverberations of Hendersonâs belch faded, and the students around him lost interest, Eddie felt like someone was watching their table still.Â
Gareth nudged him and jerked his head towards a smaller table a few yards away. Eddie swung his head over just in time to see you quickly look away to talk to Stacy. He should be used to people not liking him based on his reputation, but for some reason when it was you glaring at him, it bothered him more than normal.Â
âSheâs always staring at you like youâre some sort of bug sheâs trying to study.â Gareth snorted.Â
âShut up.â Eddie snapped. âI guess itâs better than being looked at like a bug she wants to step on.âÂ
âKinky.â muttered Jeff.Â
Everyone laughed and Eddie shook off the weird feeling that always came when you were around. He was used to people not liking him for no reason, but it bugged the shit out of him why you didnât like him.Â
Gareth nudged him again, not even a minute later and Eddie looked over to see you walking straight towards them. Towards him.Â
You looked pissed. Your brows were furrowed, and your fist was tight. Were you really about to come over and pick a fight with him? He found himself wishing you would so he could figure out what your deal was. You made eye contact with him for a solid five seconds before looking away and walking around him to throw something in the trash can behind him.Â
That was... fucking weird. Bizarre even. Why the hell had you walked across the cafeteria to the can closest to them when there was one closer to where you had been sitting?Â
âOkay, that time she wanted to step on you.â Gareth laughed.Â
âYeah, I guess.â Eddie shrugged. âShe can get in line.âÂ
You didnât return to your seat though. Eddie noticed that you stopped at a table to talk to one of the skater stoners. A few of them were regular clients of his, especially Zack, the guy with the dishwater blond hair you were now smiling at and talking to with ease. Even now, he looked high off his ass.Â
But there you were, smiling at him and chatting with him like it was normal.Â
It didnât last long, maybe thirty seconds before you make your way back to your table and went back to your seat. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see your friend (Stephanie? Tracy?) looking annoyed.Â
The whole thing was a stupid, nothing, non-interaction. Eddie was used to worse on a daily basis.Â
So why was it that for the rest of the day, he couldnât shake the way you were glaring at him out of his mind?

he is whiter then snow. this man is pure 100% american redneck in everything but the politics. this is intimidating if you dont know him because he owns like 3 different guns but also has animated discussions about âhow his sister should be able to get marriedâ when you bring up lgbt rights. his sister isnt even gay or trans or anything, he just thinks that LGBT rights also means that the lady should propose when she wants to. hes a little confused but he got the spirit. upon finding out that i am queer he said, word for word âTHATS FUCKING RADICAL HOMIEâÂ
in the first week of school he snorted a line of pepper in the cafeteria and threw up.
the only other crime hes committed before was accidently dropping a weight from his balcony and cracking the sidewalk. which is technically destruction of public property but the judge basically laughed at him and have him 10 hours of community service
this man once walked me home when i stayed late at the lab and talked to me animatedly about breeding brine shrimp for different lab purposes. absolutely captivated by this discussion. i trust him with my life
