I just want to make this perfectly clear in the most polite way possible. I love Morrissey.
Do I love him as much as Johnny? No, but that's personal preference.
But if you're gonna come onto my blog, reblog every one of my Smiths post, and try to befriend me then just please note, understand, and be aware that I love him.
I have been through constant unending cycles of people coming into my life, befriending me and gaining my trust, for a week, or sometimes several months, only to then decide oh, god. Morrissey's just too awful. He's just too heinous, too cruel, too bigoted, too racist, too inhumane, too negative, too whatever. Then I'm blocked, and I am left bereft again.
So I'm just giving a big, giant DNI to all Smiths fans until you have really legitimately thought on and decided that you are okay with who Moz is, the controversies he's embroiled in, and the things he's said and done (though I'm not ever saying you have to endorse them. Just be at peace with them).
If you think, well that might make me a little uncomfortable - that's okay! Just block my blog and don't interact with me. We can both live our lives peacefully in our own corners of the internet. There's no need to fight or be mad or be disappointed.
No, I don't agree with everything that comes out of Moz' mouth, my dude really needs to dump his nephew off a cliff and get an advisor who isn't afraid to say no to him, but I do love him. I will probably love him my whole life. I have Still Ill tattooed on my body. I have every book about him on my bookshelf aside from that shitty one by Johnny Rogan. I paid $300 to go see him last October and loved every minute of it.
So please. Please DNI in anyway if this bothers you or upsets you or potentially could bother you in the future. I'm fine with that, it doesn't offend me if you don't like him. God knows he's not perfect. But I just don't want to go through yet another period of mourning someone I thought I could trust, okay? It's exhausting.

The fact that Johnny knocked on Morrissey's door two days before he turned twenty three and that the earliest recording of them together is the cover of i want a boy for my birthday is so important to me

I know we do mostly Marrissey here buttt do we have any thoughts on Morrissey and Alain Whyte...
hello you! I think your Alain/Moz obsession is so cute, and I'm completely on board with it! Marrissey gets a lot of attention on my blog cause, well. They're them.
But I'm all for each and every one of the rare ships, unpopular ships, hated ships. I love it all.
Moz/Alain actually surprises me with how little it's mentioned or brought up? Like, maybe cause the early to mid 90s are so focused on Moz/Jake, but still. Moz wasn't with Jake the whole time, and Alain is unbelievably attractive, like. Both then and now. I've been obsessed with him since I got back into Moz in 2019. I had the stay at home sessions on repeat in 2020, I leave comments telling him to tour over here all the time (in D.C./Baltimore, I mean), I love Baby, I'm Strange. There really, absolutely needs to be more Alain enthusiasm than there is, like. It's just so weird to me he's so overlooked honestly.
But yes, absolutely feel free to send me a hundred Moz/Alain head canons. I'm 100% here for it.
It's important to remember that Johnny often seems to change his mind or tell different stories about certain songs.
When I first heard Hi, Hello, I thought there was a sense of missing Moz in it, but people insisted it was about Sonny, his daughter, from a comment he made.
And yet here, he says Hi, Hello is about a romantic relationship, like The Messenger - which is absolutely about Moz. He wrote it directly after their conversation and the failed reunion in 2008:
So. Just something to keep in mind. Johnny changes his mind a lot about his own lyrics and what they mean.
Overthinking about the lyrics of Johnny Marr's most recent song (Ophelia).
Because everything can be marrissey when you're insane. βοΈ Pseudoanalysis under the cut if you're interested in reading.
You can check the official lyrics in the description of the video here. What Johnny directly stated (Via his newsletter, you can read my screenshot here) is: "Ophelia was inspired by certainly one person I know - though it's probably a mixture of people. She's heroic, admirable and confounding, much like Shakespeare's Ophelia who possesses a quiet nobility and strength. Once the name took hold, it just sang effortlessly over the track and everything clicked." With this he would be confirming it's indeed a she but like "a certain person I know, though it's probably a mix of people" sounds interesting. Person. Unspecified gender. Not woman. Hmmm. It's also confirming it's meant to be symbolic, not literal.
Ok so I haven't read Hamlet but from what I could gather she's a female figure that symbolises helplessness, innocence, etc. So obviously, since this is symbolic, it's a person represented by her.
Of course I'm thinking about Morrissey since he's associated with femininity and he characterises himself as a helpless figure. I've also seen people also say she's a figure who went insane after Hamlet left her, sang crazy songs and is associated with flowers, among other things that reminds us of him. With that said, let's see if that holds water...
In the song Johnny talks to Ophelia directly. He states he supports her but she doesn't know this but will soon discover it; Moz is very insecure and honestly I don't blame him, Johnny is Johnny, so he doesn't know he has his support. But can find out through this song.
Ophelia is serious about what she says, according to the lyrics. Moz is absolutely serious most of the time.
Johnny says "she has to break out". This could be a reference that Moz has to free himself from this victimism and this pity play, that could also be the one he had his whole life, not just with Johnny.
"The night gets devious, your star is calling out" the night doesn't have to be a reference to a specific time, it could be about the unknown or since they're both singers they're very familiar with it. He says "his star is calling him out", which could be about him being special, his fans or even the ambition. Even though the night is scary an element of light wants him there. Could be a way to tell Moz even though he's scared he has to know he's desired and admired, it's his destiny to be a singer. To be an artist.
I could be overthinking but. That's what this is about.
"You're so imperious, dancing mysterious, the nova flame that never burns out" Moz is very authoritarian and dominant with his art, he's the one establishing boundaries and dictating the vision. The dance could be literal, since we know he does dance on stage, but it could also be a way to say he's private. He makes himself a mystery. Alluring. Which is true, Moz does that.
"Nova flame that never burns out" doesn't necessarily mean he's new or young. But that he's very original and consistently creative, different and ahead of his peers. Ironically despite his helpless persona, Moz doesn't give up. He's still here and makes it very clear he's never leaving and he won't run out of creativity or things to say. It's a praise to Moz and it's true.
"Who will come today? Who will come your way?" Could be about how Moz talks about the obstacles he faces. It could be ironic from Johnny's part since Moz constantly talks about his enemies. It could also be a genuine question, to know Moz's worries.
"When the day is done and you get home, you can stop the rain" Ophelia died by drowning because of sorrow she felt, so this expression means "after everything is done, you can be successful and overcome your fears". That Moz can avoid his own tragedies in the end. He wants Moz to fight this sense of inevitability because the only limit is what he does. His own will, despite what he could face.
"Sometimes you gotta scream out, yeah stir it up, tear everything down" we know Moz deeply represses himself and seems to have some kind of martyr complex. So Johnny is encouraging him to finally be himself and make a big mess, an honest one. Again it's a bit ironic since Ophelia is a helpless figure who destroyed herself instead of others, when pushed to the limit. Sounds familiar?
"You got me, Ophelia, and sure enough we're gonna break out" NOW this is interesting. Johnny says Moz has him and is hopeful they'll break free. From what? Could be many things. It could be a way Johnny sympathises with him, that they're on the same side. These two always had the mentality of "it's us against the world". They're both reactionary people in this regard and that's why they connected so well since the beginning. It's also why Moz can't move on from Johnny either, in real life, that connection was extremely meaningful and unique for him. He seems to think it won't happen ever again.
Johnny repeats the chorus and ends with "You got to find out who will come your way". In the beginning Johnny established he supports Moz and Moz doesn't know it, so this could be his way of saying "you have to find out I'm going to be the next person returning to you". OR it could be about him asking MOZ to watch out to see who's going to come next to his life, after Johnny.
This is the end of the analysis. IDK I COULD BE OVERTHINKING BUT YEAH THAT'S WHAT I THINK, EITHER THAT OR IT'S ACTUALLY ABOUT AN ACTUAL WOMAN IN HIS LIFE LIKE HIS WIFE, HIS DAUGHTER, ETC.
