It feels like a uniquely American capitalist take to assume these traditions will make you completely self sufficient. You need a lot of people, a lot of time, a lot of knowledge across a lot of subjects, and a lot of luck to provide for everyone's nutritional needs.

So should you even bother trying to be more self sufficient with your food? I argue yes. Foraging and gardening are fun and will teach you so much about many things. They are deeply rewarding activities that can supplement your diet. There are herbs I haven't bought in years because I grow my own. There are dishes I can only make with foraged ingredients because I can't get them in stores.

but then you look at this cartoony villain, and it's just kind of...brilliant?

here's this white woman -- and not just any white woman, but a white woman who is heavily implied to be of the Aryan super-race waiting-for-Hitler's-return type--who takes one look at Joe and becomes weirdly sexually infatuated with him and obsessed with his race and ethnicity and culture and openly indulges in fetishizing him and his Indigeneity...

...much like the way 99% of the world fetishizes Indigenous peoples, culture, and religions.

like, it's not even on the nose by the season finale! the script has this weirdo lady behaving in the most bonkers anti-Indigenous way by going hard in on her fetish, becoming a caricature of a caricature that is both so uncomfortable to watch and honestly just the best kind of satire for the way a lot of people actually think and behave.

and in this way, the villain becomes a neat little indictment of the cartoonish ways anti-Indigenous racism permeates so much of everyday life, never mind Hollywood, television and film, literature, music, poetry, and general popular culture to this day. it's everywhere and the show really goes in on how ludicrously everyday this kind of racism and fetishization is--a sobering take on a real phenomenon.

But, the way they were able to create such an accurate embodiment of the fetishization of indigenous people/culture portrayed by a white woman is beyond important and genius.
