There was a crashing sound, then a familiar moaning that rolled through the funeral home before Beth heard Daryl call out her name. It was walkers, with her heart pounding in her chest she grabbed his crossbow and tossed it to him without thinking. When their eyes seemed to meet and demands were made for her to run Beth did that but not without arguing towards the stubborn crossbow wielder that she wasn’t going to leave him. She couldn’t, not when a horde was on his back. But there was a part of her that didn’t want to put Daryl in more danger if she tried to help him. So she zig-zagged through the hallways and grabbed her bag of supplies to swing it over her back. Looking behind herself, Beth saw it was clear and made her way towards the exit.
The moment she stepped outside she saw to the side of her a walker creeping up, but instead of attacking it Beth made a quick dash towards the trees. There was no chance the walker would have caught up to her even if it saw her. She needed to focus on getting to the road to meet Daryl so both of them could find a safer place to rest their heads. Though before she was even able to do just that she came to a skidding stop when another sound reached her ears. In a squint of her eyes, Beth looked ahead where she saw a car driving on the road she was trying to reach. Her first assumption had been it was the people who left food at the funeral home that they were able to eat. But Beth knew better than to assume such things and reached for her knife attached to her hip and tightened her grip around the handle.
Just as she began approaching closer to the car that stopped on the side of the road, Beth checked over her shoulder again for good measure to make sure no walkers were close by. Knelling down to hide behind the bushes and trees surrounding her Beth watched as the men who got out of the car began to search the area while another came close to the bushes she was hiding in to relieve himself. In a quiet gag, Beth looked away and shifted on her feet to maneuver away. But as she did this the sound of branches breaking under her from her weight emitted a sound. It was enough to stop the man from unzipping his pants and reach for his weapon instead to begin his search.
Beth could have cursed at herself for alerting the man, but little did she see through the dark that there was a third man and he began circling around the bushes where Beth was hiding. Before she had time to react or move away her petite frame was holstered up and her back was pinned to a man’s chest restraining her from escaping. But that didn’t stop Beth from struggling, or letting out a scream that undoubtedly would draw walkers towards her.
“Look what we got here boys.” The man spoke from behind Beth in a thick voice. “Whats a pretty thing like you doing out here all alone?”
“Screw you.” Beth hissed back while keeping a watchful eye for the walkers that might have crept up on them. Or even Daryl, who most likely should have made it to her by now… But he was nowhere in sight, just where was he? Did he get out of the funeral home in time?
In a low chuckle, the man’s grip over Beth tightened. Somewhere during the struggle, Beth dropped her knife so the man hadn’t seen it or heard it hit the ground. “Maybe you’re not alone? Tell us do you have a friend out here with you? I promise we’ll take good care—”
But Beth didn’t give the man a chance to finish as the heel of her boot came stomping down onto the man’s foot. This gave Beth the chance to pull away from him when his grip loosened and reach down to pick up her knife. In that same motion, she turned to point her weapon at the man who came charging at her in frustration. The last thing Beth wanted to do was hurt another person, but they were giving her no choice but to defend herself by using her knife that plunged under the man’s jaw and stopping him in his tracks.
As warm thick blood spewed out of his mouth and onto her hands, Beth jerked the blade free. Her adrenaline was pumping, making it so her hands shook with a mixture of fear and shock. With wide blue eyes, she turned to the other two men when the first one fell to the ground to bleed out. “Stay back.” She demanded with a point to each of them. They too shared the same shocked look, but it was because of something else behind her. When she looked at to what they were staring at she saw a group of walkers slinking their way towards her. All she could do at that point was mutter. “Crap…” @ncbodysbitch
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He pictured staying at the funeral home for a while, a couple weeks—maybe a couple months. Life didn’t work like that though, you didn’t always get what you wanted. One stupid mistake and it all came crashing down, he was quick to answer the door to get out of having a PERSONAL conversation. He thought it was the dog, he wanted to lure it inside—for Beth.
Instead it was a small herd, pushing through and claiming the home. All he could think about was Beth and how he had to protect her. They needed to get out of there. He drew them away so she could sneak out the front door, he’d meet her on the road. That was the plan.
He was stuck inside longer than he wanted to be, while he was focused on staying alive—his mind kept drifting to BETH . Did she make it out okay? What if she ran into trouble? He did his best to focus on himself because he wouldn’t be able to protect her if he was dead. He knew that she didn’t need protecting though, that didn’t stop him from wanting to protect her.
Finally he made it out of the house, heavy breaths escaping his lips as he looked around—the blonde was nowhere in sight and he could feel himself start to panic. He quickly bent down to examine the tracks, it looked like she made a quick dash for the trees and he took off, crossbow in hand.
Once he got to the trees he saw the body first and then Beth and two others. He was ready to shoot and not ask any questions but they had a SHOCKED expression on their face, he turned around and saw the group of walkers heading right toward them.
The archer didn’t even have a chance to catch his breath before grabbing Beth by the arm to lead her in the opposite direction. Away from the walkers, away from the stranger. “C’mon.” He murmured before dashing deeper into the trees. He wasn’t sure how long they were running, it was likely minutes but it felt like hours. It was dark, the only thing lighting the way was the full moon and the stars.
Daryl finally stopped when they reached a large tree in the woods, up above was a tree house, it would be a fine place to rest till morning. He wanted to investigate first. He looked around before moving to climb the ladder, throwing open the latch and climbing inside. No walkers, no people, looked like some kids hideout before the world went to shit. Inside there were snacks, comic books, sodas, a small tube tv and a couple bean bag chairs.
“C’mon up.”He said down the latch, once he saw it was safe. He rummaged around his back pack pulling out a candle and lighting it up so they could both see.
The last thing Beth was expecting was for Daryl to come rushing in to save her, yet again. But he couldn’t have had better timing considering the circumstances she got herself in yet again. Luckily, they were able to use the walkers as a diversion and it seemed to work in their favor. Not a single thing alive or dead was following them, or that’s what it seemed since it was too dark to tell otherwise. The further they ran the harder they went the more Beth’s ankle began giving her a reminder of her injury from that trap when Daryl was teaching her how to track. But she didn’t complain, she couldn’t. If they stopped there was no telling what could have greeted them unexpectantly. So, she pushed through, only hoping in the back of her mind that they would reach a safe point sooner instead of later.
When they came across an abandoned tree house, Beth looked up to it with scrutiny. After so much had happened, how couldn’t she? What if someone else had found this place before them? What if they were waiting up there just to attack Daryl. Although she knew he could handle himself, Beth, still worried and waited as patiently as one could muster before she heard his voice signaling her to come up. It was a relief and upon adjusting her belonging over her shoulder, Beth grabbed onto the first plank of wood to carefully climb up the man-made ladder even though every push against her ankle made her want to wail out.
There was no better relief than that of reaching the top where she took notice of the belonging inside and Daryl making use of his own items to give them some comfort. After the candle was lit, Beth smiled weakly. It was all she could do before she walked over to one of the bean bag chairs where she tossed her bag of belonging next to and followed with hitting the poofy chair that was calling her name to sit down. Dust which had accumulated on the chair lifted up and around her, making the blonde to lightly cough and wave a hand around to clear the air. That was smart…. Or so she thought to herself before looking cautiously over to her boot that kept her injury hidden. A part of her didn’t even want to take the boot off to see the damage she had done. But she knew the compression would only make it swell worse.
“You think we lost them?” She asked curiously over to Daryl to keep him preoccupied with questions as she slowly brought her leg in a bend over her other leg so she could carefully remove the boot. Though just the slightest wiggle to loosen it had her cursing inside her head. Just how was she supposed to take this off without Daryl noticing her huffing and puffing? Maybe if she just ripped it off real quick it would hurt less? Just like a band-aid! It was probably a foolish idea, but it was the only alternative she had besides asking for help, and dammit she didn’t want to make Daryl feel like he had to help her… He was already doing so much.
With a quick glance his way, Beth ensured Daryl had been busy doing his own thing before she grabbed the heel of her boot. A slow countdown began in her head and as soon as she reached the final number Beth pulled the boot off. Unexpected pain shot through her, causing the blond to buckle forward. Nostrils flared giving Beth the chance to take in a quick inhale and toss her boot to the ground in a quiet thud. She didn’t even want to look now… The relief of the boot coming off only made her ankle throb with relief yet with a pain that was excruciating.
“It’s a shame there isn’t any moonshine in here… I definitely need it.” She attempted to joke even if it had been a poor one. It gave her time to gather her thoughts and slowly sit straight again before she grew the courage to turn to her unforgotten ankle again. “For what it’s worth… I’m sorry for almost getting us killed back there… I shouldn’t have let those guys get to close before they realized I was there.” She mentioned in a soft-spoken voice while taking the end of her sock to pull off last.
This was the last place that Daryl would have expected to be. Wehn they had found the prison and settled in, they had started to feel comfortable. Things had started to feel like a community, like a home. That was their first mistake, really. One that he would be worried about happening again in the future. Because if they get too comfortable like they had done this time around, there was always the risk of something going wrong. There was the risk of being unprepared for whatever it was that would go wrong. It was something that Daryl vowed to himself the second that he and Beth managed to escape the prison together safely that he wouldn’t allow to happen again. In his mind, the best option was going to be to keep moving. They had to now as they tried to hunt down their family and reconnect with them, but even once that happened the only thing that he would want them to be would be to keep moving.
But here he and Beth sat in the funeral home snacking on food that had been gathered up by whoever was residing her previously. It felt a bit wrong, taking something someone else had scavenged for, but he was all too familiar with the phrase finders keepers nowadays. Anything that anyone could find unprotected would be their own, and that seemed to be the unspoken rule of the world in it’s current state. So whenever Beth suggested that she was going to write a thank you note to whoever it was that had left these here, he sat there in a moment of stunned silence as he looked at her. A thank you note. Hell, people hardly thanked anyone for anything nowadays, it was hardly a thing that anyone would expect. But Beth was here wanting to leave a note for something that wasn’t even worth a thank in his book. Maybe there could be good people out there. She was a model one if he had ever seen one.
And in that brief of a moment, it got him thinking that maybe they could settle. At least for a small, temporary time. Maybe they could become comfortable here so long as they were smart about it. Even if it went against all he had thought the moment the prison fell, it was something on his mind now, all sparked from Beth changing his mind and inspiring him. Maybe becoming comfortable here, with her, wasn’t such a bad idea.
So he paused for a bit before scraping his spoon at the edge of the jar and shoving the bite into his mouth again, offering her a shrug. “Maybe we don’t gotta leave no note. Maybe we don’t gotta leave. Can stay here. If someone else comes back, we’ll just…deal with it then.”
At first, Beth didn’t think she heard Daryl correctly did he just say… They could stay here for a while? Pure curiosity began to set in that moment and with it Beth dropped everything she was doing to turn her attention to the archer and blink not once but twice upon letting his words sit with her. “So… You still think there are still good people out there…?” She asked in her soft-spoken voice that held a tinge of hope. After all, this was huge… That was if Daryl somehow changed his mind. But that brought more questions to flood her mind. What did change his mind in the first place?
When she knew the stubborn man across from her would fight tooth and nail on her about opening about this with her, Beth couldn’t help but smile even brighter. To her, it was a fun challenge in a way. Daryl was a complex man, and although he might have not known it… He did help her grow in many ways. From being patient, persistent… And stronger. It was because of that she had such a high respect for him. Not to mention what he did for their family beforehand. Daryl was always one to protect and provide for them no matter what. So of course, she wouldn’t force him to say something he didn’t want to, she knew when to back off. But there seemed to be a mutual understanding between the both to an extent. Which was probably due from the both of them depending on each other since the prison’s downfall. All they had were each other until they found the others. Beth had to keep that hope alive that they were all still okay.
Just as she leaned in her lips parted to question one last time. “What changed your mind?” With her voice trailing off into silence Beth’s raised her eyes to lock onto his own. It was there her smile began to falter the longer she stared into his and quickly she realized what did change his mind. It was her. Or at least that’s what she assumed when she read his expression that said more than words ever could. The realization was enough to cause her heart to race. Sure, since they left the prison, she was insistent on reminding Daryl that there were still good people around. But he was so quiet that she thought her words would never get to him. But somehow, she managed to convince him… And her only brilliant response to this was. “Oh.”

❝ i’m trying my best ! doesn’t that matter ?! ❞ (from my maggie? i'm sorry for her already as she's in an angst mood xD)
Beth squinted her eyes towards her sister and began to back away. Not to retreat from her sudden outlash, but to try and understand it from Maggie’s perspective. She saw right then and there the struggle she was dealing with. The pain, and in that moment all Beth wanted to do was take it away so her sister could feel whole again. But she couldn’t all she could do was be there for her as she had done for her so many times before. Thinking back on those times made a soft smile creep to the corner of her lips and begin to grow brighter as she stepped forward.
“Maggie...” She called out upon reaching out to her physically to touch her arm with a gentle touch of her fingertips on her arm. There was a hope there that this would help bring her back down to her as she tried to reason with her. “I know--” She paused suddendly to shake her head as if to correct herself. “We know you are trying your best. Without you, we would have never gotten this far in the first place. Which is why we need you now. The people of Hilltop need you. There's no one better who can lead them but you. Please come back with me.”
