The Six Napoleons

Though most of Watson’s early manuscripts are now lost, his later output has been widely studied and enables the reader to glimpse at a plethora of fascinating might-have-beens. In the original draft of this turn-of-the-century adventure, Lestrade sneaks in a “damned” that was quickly corrected. Did Watson feel that a Scotland Yarder shouldn’t be quoted swearing? Or did the inspector make the request prior to publication?

Lestrade’s heartfelt speech at the conclusion of the case is in keeping with the evolution of his relationship with Holmes. Far from the tense inspector we first meet in A Study in Scarlet, at the beginning of this strange affair of the Napoleon busts he is paying a rather casual (and not unusual) evening call, keeping Holmes abreast of the Yard's goings-on but leisurely puffing at a cigar.
