Random late night thought:
I’ve being thinking a lot about Aerion (which is surprising if you know me), and how he’s kinda tragic in a way. I’m not going to defend his actions, but there’s something to be said about how patriarchal structures impacted how he was raised. Double that with him being a Targaryen, it is a recipe for disaster (most of the time).
Young men, generally, are expected to suppress any emotion seen as “feminine” at an early age. With that there’s also the expectation to adopt more “masculine” ways to express their feelings. One of the main ones being anger.
Going with my first point, there’s also the expectation of men being mostly detached from their emotions. Especially with fathers relationships with their children. It doesn’t mean they love them less, but it means they don’t connect with them on a deeper level most of the time. Since, that’s typically seen as the role of the mother.
Young boys are allowed to get away with more than young girls. There’s this idea that boys will eventually grow out of harmful behaviors, and that you should let them be. Which, if you couldn’t guess, can lead to potentially dangerous consequences in the future.
When one is raised in a position of power (may that be gender, social status, race, etc), they tend to abuse that power. And, they are told that it’s okay to do so because of that power. The idea of “inherent better-ness” is the core of their identity, even when it’s not true.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Feel free to add to them, or disagree with them. (Also sorry for the typos and grammar mistakes that are definitely in this. I wrote this at 12:30am)
