I’m not going to go into the whole entire plot of the expansion, but due to your own actions (done in an attempt to help the people of the First Shard, which WAS working great), you end up on the path to becoming The Lightwarden, the most powerful and dangerous Lightwarden ever. You have a friend who slows it down for you, but you become a ticking time bomb.

Also another friend was going to save you but the current big bad decided to kidnap him and you gotta go find his ass while the stagnant Light in your body slowly turns you into Godzilla

Within the story you do manage to get rid of that light and survive, but it gets real close

And since B’raht Jadian is two idiots in one body, with technically two souls, I have two bad alternatives in which they don’t both survive.

In each version, one idiot tries to pull that light into just himself, to save the other. When Obsidian tries, Jade refuses to let him die and they end up half-separating and re-fusing into a new Lightwarden and it’s very sad, I make their local boyfriend go be the new WoL for EW and he has to go tell their friends and datemates back home in another dimension that they died.

But the one I’ve been spinning is the one where Jade tries to take the light.

Obsidian still tries to stop him, but Jade manages to sort of push him away, and the imbalance in their body and soul caused by him trying to contain the Light within just himself tears them back into two people—for the first time in four years—and Jade becomes the Lightwarden Agape.

Fighting Agape is not an option. But they manage to push it, just as the transformation is finishing, into the rift between realms, where nothing can survive, and it dies there.

The First and the Source are saved! Mission accomplished!!!

Except Jade’s gone.

So much had happened between him and Obsidian, so much of it bad. Obsidian spent longer than he’d like to admit now thinking he didn’t care about Jade, but now he’s spent four years sharing a body with him. They did literally everything together whether they wanted to or not. They got lost together in a strange world, and had to learn to navigate and help it in a body that wasn’t really either of theirs initially. Through it all they’ve been trying to find a way home, to their friends and datemates, and to have their own bodies back.

And now suddenly Obsidian does have his own body back, and it feels wrong.

As B’raht, their body strength had been averaged out, and initially they were stronger than Jade had been and weaker than Obsidian had been. Obsidian had gotten used to that strength, especially as it grew with all of their trials and challenges. Now he’s alone, and his physical strength seems to have shot up suddenly, but he’s lost the agility Jade had had, that he didn’t even realize wasn’t his own anymore. And worst of all (at first) is the silence. There’s no one else in his head anymore. No one making jokes to lighten the mood, no one to help him figure out problems, no familiar and comforting voice offering to take over for a while. Just him. And he’d never felt so lonely before.

But there’s more, too. The people who were there saw the whole thing, know who he is, but he looks different now.

All of the scions, plus F’llhamin, Khalji, and the kids they adopted were told, but they’re not going to recognize him. Plus Arya was obviously doubtful of that whole thing, and Mythril and Mythrite are so young Obsidian’s not sure they understood when they told them (and he wouldn’t be able to blame them if they didn’t), and…

fuck. And the leaders he’s worked with. How many of them did they tell? Merlwyb? Nanamo? Kan-E-Senna?? Lyse knows, at least she can vouch for Obsidian if they forgot to tell Raubahn. They definitely didn’t tell Hien, though, right? Or Aymeric?? He can’t even remember who does and doesn’t know, twelve help him.

…So it takes a long while for him to get used to being on his own again. And a lot of talking to people to try and tell them who he is, and what happened to B’raht, without Jade and his people skills to help him.

About a year later, after the events of Endwalker, he finds his way home. Finally. Thank god.

And then someone asks if he knows where Jade went, and finally what he already knew, what he’d been trying not to think about hits him like a freight train:

Jade never got to come home.

Jade died in a strange world trying to save people he didn’t know, and never made it back.

He never even got to say goodbye.

And now Obsidian, also just finding out that the five years he spent in another world were only five months here, has to figure out how to tell Jade’s housemates—and especially Dark and Zuli, who have his transgressions against them much fresher in their minds than he does—that Jade’s dead. And he’s not coming back.

He has no idea how they’re going to react. He thinks he might get a little bit of grace from Zuli and maybe Dark, since they all went through some shit together and seemed more willing to accept that he’d changed after that goddamn hotel, but he’s not sure they wouldn’t accuse him of killing Jade. Or just letting him die and not lifting a finger to help (and could he really argue with that? There must’ve been something he could’ve done, right…?)

And he’s still not entirely used to this. His own body again. He’s still asking for Jade’s opinion in his head and waiting for responses that never come. He keeps pushing himself through mentally exhausting tasks forgetting he can’t just switch out and let Jade take over a little while. He still forgets he’s stronger than he was when they were B’raht—and now that he’s got his corruption back, hes got his enhanced strength back, so it’s even worse—and keeps breaking things by accident.

And there’s no one to lean on, who understands what’s happened.

Jet, doing much better than he was when everyone back home last saw him, was there for some things. He knows what it felt like trying to navigate a strange new world and find a place to fit in, while trying to find a way home. But he wasn’t there for everything. He wasn’t there for the horrors and tragedies that B’raht saw, and he wasn’t there when Jade died. He certainly has no idea what Obsidian feels now, with Jade’s loved ones giving him these mistrustful looks that he can’t help thinking are full of blame, blaming him for killing what now feels like an important part of himself.
