To all my followers who are citizens of the EU and of voting age, please consider signing and sharing this EU citizens’ initiative requesting that the European Commission stop upholding intellectual property rights regarding COVID vaccines and treatments and make them a public good instead.
In order for the European Commission to read these proposals this initiative needs a lot more people signing that it has now, so every person counts.
Please reblog if you support this. Likes don’t mean much on this hellsite, and they especially mean nothing for this sort of thing!
#belgium is the only country with its quota of signatures some countries signature numbers are very low spread this !!
Yup, Belgium has over 160% of its quota already (go us!) but if I recall my EU law classes correctly, not all States need to meet the requirement:
Art. 3.1.b) of the Regulation on the European citizen’s initiative : “in at least one quarter of the Member States, the number of signatories is at least equal to the minimum number set out in Annex I, corresponding to the number of the Members of the European Parliament elected in each Member State, multiplied by the total number of Members of the European Parliament, at the time of registration of the initiative.”
So basically: we need 1 million signatories, and at least a quarter of the member states need to have met their quota (so that’s eight countries). If this initiative gets to 1 million signatures, and at least 8 countries have met their quota, the European Commission is required to examine the initiative (following a rather strict procedure, but it has no obligation to actually take action - there’s a chance that the more people sign this, the likelier they are to actually do smth).
According to current numbers on the countries closest to meeting their threshold, please sign especially if you’re from Italy, Ireland, France, Spain, Cyprus, The Netherlands, Greece, and also Finland for a ninth country (also sign if you’re from other countries, but current signature percentage is very low (under 10%) for all other countries, so these ones are currently the ones most likely to meet their threshold).
