I have to wonder (im lying I believe in my shriveled heart) that Dutch enabled Molly with her "attitude" towards chores and the other girls. Like, just hear me out.
I personally believe that Dutch fed lines about chores being "below" her, probably to appeal to her sense of self, and probably to maximize his time with her. I mean, he's found this strong-headed, wealthy, beautiful woman in a country she's basically alone in. She's got no one but you dude, that's a vulnerability opportunity!
SO, you promise her adventure. Now, what's not adventurous? Chores. Cleaning. Mending. In comparison to riding out at midnight to rob a stage or taking a night out in a local town, the difference is clear. So you woo her with stolen goods and maybe a ride out on your majestic ass horse, the dream is manifesting. You are in the clear now for what you really want, right?
But one has to wonder, was Molly that high-strung? I mean, I refuse to believe that Molly, a newcomer in a strange land, did not think "Well.. I'm running with this gang now. I should probably get to know the folks I'm living with." I don't think she wanted to become besties with everyone, but you'd think she'd probably want to get to know who the company Dutch kept.
But here's the part where I'm a bitter hag (and maybe self-projecting). So you're telling me, that Molly, someone who was seeking adventure and by some extent, was willing to give up the comforts of her old life, was not willing to try to connect with the other women? I mean, okay, yes, there is a clear social hierarchy that she's used to, but you'd think maybe she'd rid herself of that (just a smidge) if she's going to give up a roof over her head for tents and venison stew every day.
But you've got Dutch, spouting romantic poetry and sweeping her off her feet, he's convinced this strong-willed woman to join him at his side. She's crossed a fucking ocean! She's given up all connections to her status and friends, family, everything! That kinda requires a spine, last I checked! And he's feeding her sweet words and the like, but maybe.. maybe slip in a little something about the other girls.
"Oh, Mary Beth reads those silly romance books too. But of course, we are living one, my dear."
"Don't mind Miss Jones, she's.. well, she's cut from a different cloth. Coarser kind, my dear Miss O'Shea. Nothing like yours."
"Oh you'll adore Tilly! Sweetest girl, a little blunt, but sweet."
"Ah, Susan. Yes, yes she's.. well you've seen her. She's used to being the lady of the camp, but right now, you are the one by my side. The only lady I see."
"Miss Roberts? Oh yes.. John's.. woman."
These are just what I think he'd say in the guise of reassurances, of dismissing her concerns or curiosity about the others. He wants to address them in a way that satisfies the bare minimum but also plant seeds of.. distrust. "Oh, well.. If Karen's coarse, maybe I should avoid softer topics." "Mary Beth is just a dreamer, but I'm living the dream." "Tilly's sweet? Maybe I'll talk to her--Oh! She's.. blunt. for sure. Maybe too blunt."
Don't get me started on her and Susan's dynamic. Two strong women were scammed out of good lives by bro. (I will yap about this later)
So when Molly talks to Abigail about her relationship with Dutch, she's really trying to open up about this. In my mind, Abigail is probably the safest person to talk to.
She's committed to being a mother (and to some extent, John) so loyalty to Dutch is divided between maternal responsibilities and being an active member of the gang
She's not overtly bitter towards her
She's got her own beef with Grimshaw (argued against returning to sex work to contribute towards the gang's funds)
She's another strong-willed woman who's not afraid of getting rough (Abigail I would fight John for you I swear)
She's also going through some relationship problems
But of course, when Abigail tells her the bitter, ugly truth about the strings attached to Dutch's love, Molly denies it. Again, she's sunk a good amount of time and energy into this relationship. (I mean, bring Arthur and John into the conversation too, he's got them by the necks every time he calls them "son" or "brother").
Dutch has fed enough into Molly. Isolated her, fed her pretty words and when she's full and happy, she goes into the world with that information. And when the world reacts the way she's been told it will, it feeds a loop. "Oh Grimshaw really is a jealous tramp!" "Miss Jones has no sense of propriety!" Remember, she doesn't know these women like Dutch does. Like they know each other.
But it's too late. She's established herself "above" these girls. "Well they're so rude! So coarse! All they do is talk amongst one another! I want to talk too!" But when she talks about being in love with Dutch with Tilly, she's brushed off pretty quick for only wanting to yap and not work. Dutch bringing over Mary Beth and her to listen to some shit by Miller, in some weird ploy to pit them against one another (imo) because who else can appreciate the beauty of his words?
Isolate. Discredit. Minimize. Over and over again. You are another pawn in this game, pretty and bright, but playable. You've found yourself alone in a camp of strangers, essentially. In a country that is not yours. With a robber who promised you everything, only to find you've been robbed.
You are desperate. Everyone is. I cannot imagine how Molly felt when she realized the breaking point was near. When she realized that she looked deranged and pathetic, writhing for attention, affection, some sort of connection. But when it's presented (i.e. Arthur or Karen talking to her at Shady Belle.) she rejects it. It's like fire against frozen hands; it's going to hurt at an extreme, but it's because it's been so long so you don't have a baseline. You've been in the cold for so long, why won't he let you back in?
Dutch knew. Maybe not endgame but he knew one way or another Molly would be another thread to pick off. Either by her own hand or someone else's. All manipulative people do. Transaction over, now go bother someone else until you're ready to do another, if you have anything to give and if it's better than what's available.
