he effortlessly wore a pair of navy scrubs with a faded pittsburgh baseball cap pulled low over his brow line making her cheeks warm as she noticed his broad biceps peaking out from under his sleeve.

her eyes glanced towards his salt-and-pepper stubble and she waved as she noticed his hospital id clipped to his waistband.

she bit back a smile, noticing he had the most confused expression she'd ever seen directed at a coffee menu.

"is this your first time here?” she chirped.

he looked over at her— hazel eyes meeting hers. “is it that obvious?" he gave her a crooked sideways smile that caused her heart to flutter.

"a little." she chuckled but the second she said it, her face fell. "oh— sorry." she winced. "i’m sorry! that sounded mean."

"it did." he said flatly.

"oh my god—” she panicked walking her hands, motioning that she didn’t mean it that way.

"i’m kidding, kid.” his mouth tugged into the faintest smile making her gasp out as relief washed over her so visibly that he almost laughed.

"i was told to come here," he said as he stepped up to the register. "apparently the coffee across the street doesn’t hit the spot like this place does."

she giggled. "yeah, i’ve heard that before."

"you have?" he rose a brow, tilting his head causing her to to the same.

"mostly from doctors like you." she shrugged.

"how do you know i’m a doctor?"

"i mean..." she pointed sheepishly. "the badge gave it away."

he looked at it, "right."

great job. you moron, he thought.

she looked at him as he looked at the menu and ten back at her.

“i’m going to be honest." drawled.

"okay."

"i have no idea what any of this means." he pointed at all of the specialty items causing her to smile widely.

"t— the menu?"

he nodded once, "feels like i'm taking another board exam." he joked making her laugh— a bright sound that a couple people turned to look as she covered her mouth.

"oops, sorry."

"for laughing?" he tilted his head.

"i laugh really loud." she blushed shaking her head.

"i don't think you do."

"you don't?"

"no." he said as he found himself studying her for a second. she had this habit of apologizing for things that didn't need apologizing for.

"so," she said, trying to recover, "what do you usually drink?"

"eh” he shrugged, “a black coffee."

"no flavor?" she wondered.

"nope."

she nodded, "okay, any sugar?"

"no."

"creamer?"

"nah." he shook his head making her tilt her head, her hair fanning over her face.

"so, just a coffee then."

"yes, please."

"hm,” she pretended to think very hard, “i think i have just the thing." she chirped making him smile.

"i was hoping you'd say that."

she turned to make the drink while he looked around the shop. it was cozy, quiet and nothing like the emergency department he'd left twenty minutes ago.

"you know,” she hummed, her voice carrying over the sound of steaming milk, "you look less confused now."

"it’s because i’m not looking at the menu anymore."

"that helps." she mused.

"it does."

she finished pouring the coffee before grabbing a lid as she reached for a marker, she hesitated. she did it all of the time, the little smiley faces on the cups.. but he looked almost too serious for that. she bit her bottom lip, tapping the marker against the cup— then, before she could overthink it she drew a tny smiley face.

"there you go." she huffed out with a smile and slid the cup across the counter.

jack reached for it, looking down at the cup then back up at her. "you drew a smiley face."

eery ounce of confidence left her body, “oh.. i—” she laughed, “i do that sometimes.. b-it if people don’t like it i can—”

this is so embarrassing, she thought.

“you do it for everybody?"

she nodded quickly, “yeah, most of the time."

"why?"

she shrugged, "i don't know."

she gave him a bashful smile as she averted her eyes from him while giving him a tiny smile. “i think coffee should make people smile before they even drink it."

he looked at the cup again and then at her. "damn that's a good answer."

his words made her shiver causing her hands to rub her hands together ti distract herself on how nervous he was making her. her heart was beating so fast she almost thought he could actually hear it.

“i’m glad." she said quietly as he took a sip. jack paused, rolling his eyes making her stomach drop in anticipation.

"this is really good."

she stated at him while he started back. neither of them looking away from one another. neither of them moved. she opened her mouth to say ‘thank you’ but someone behind him politely cleared their throat.

he stepped aside, "right." he shook his head motioning for the person to walk up to the counter but her coworker came form the kitchen waved down the customer towards them, noticing how her cheeks were bright pink and the order man stood staring at her with a molten hot stare.

she laughed softly, "busy morning." she said, nervously twirling a strand of hair between her fingers.

"guess so." he hummed. he picked up his coffee again before heading toward the door but just before he pushed it open, he glanced back. "you know..” she looked up, "i never got your name."

for a second, she completely forgot how to speak as she opened and closed her mouth a few times before finally spitting it out to him. he repeated it quietly, like he was making sure he'd remember.

"jack." he pointed to himself making her laugh.

"i know."

"you do?" he asked in slight confusion.

he pointed toward the hospital badge still clipped to his waistband causing him to look down.

"i really should stop forgetting that's there." he blushed lightly, rubbing the back of his neck out and ofnervous habit.

"it keeps giving you away." she joked.

he laughed.

"i guess i’ll be seeing more of you” he smiled causing her to nod slowly.

"i hope so." she tilted her head as she watched him walk backwards towards the front door.

hack nodded once, biting his bottom lip like he was in his mid twenties all over again before disappearing out the door.

the little bell chimed behind him and stood there for another few seconds, staring at the door.

"you forgot to charge him for the extra espresso shot." her coworker's voice snapped her back to reality.

"w— what?"

"you gave him a double shot." her coworker laughed as she fished off the counter filled with croissant crumbs.

"i did?"

"mhm."

"oops." she shook her head before looking at the computer to see how she put in his order.

her coworker smirked. “you were flirting it up with that silver fox.” she laughed excitedly.

"hey! i was not." she protested.

"you absolutely were."

she looked down at the register, "do you think he'll actually come back here?"
