Notes: The mods said "happy pride", my brain did ... this. I dunno what my problem is.
“Forgive me, father, for I have sinned.” The confessional reeks of dust and sage. Steve shuffles on the bench and loosens his uniform tie. The sooner he gets this done, the lower his chance of getting a migraine. “It has been two weeks since my last confession.”
“You sure about that? Cause I've been here a month, and we haven't had the pleasure.”
Steve sputters. Shoot, that's right. He's heard the girls gushing about the new priest in the halls. His long hair and dark, pretty eyes. The dimples in his smile. He tries to look beyond the ornate screen, but all he can make out is a shadowy figure.
“Wanna try again?”
“Don't talk to me like that,” Steve bristles. “My dad's chairman of the school council, he'll-”
“Ah,” the priest hums. “That makes you Mr. Harrington. I've heard all about you. You're captain of the swim and basketball teams.”
“That's right,” Steve huffs. “I've been busy. Those competitions are important.”
“More so than your immortal soul?”
Silence falls.
“You resent this, don't you?” the priest asks. “Coming here, laying yourself bare before a stranger. You think it's beneath you.”
Steve doesn't answer.
“You do know,” the man sighs, “that out of the seven cardinal sins, pride is the vilest, right? Because it keeps us from accepting guidance and help?”
Steve's nails dig into the bench. The stench of sage makes his head throb.
“You know that, if we do not confess our sins, we are inviting evil into our lives? Have you been tempted by evil, Steve?”
Steve's stomach sinks. Suddenly, he's seven years old again, getting caught while spacing out at Sunday school.
“Yes, father,” he admits. “I've been having … strange dreams.”
He can't bring himself to go into the details.
How all of the dreams feature the same man. How he can never recall his face once he wakes. Just the way his eyes burn - past flushed, naked skin and straight into your soul. How his fingers end in wickedly sharp nails that leave burning trails of pure, wanton lust all across your body. How his voice makes your blood boil and sends your head spinning, forcing you to heed his every command.
Kneel. Open wide. There's a good boy.
How some wicked, twisted part of him looks forward to these dreams.
The priest hums.
“Just as I feared. We have to act quickly to ward off the forces trying to lead you astray, and I need you to follow my every instruction. Can you do that?”
Steve nods. Remembers the man can't see him.
“Yes, father.”
“There's a good boy,” the man purrs. Something forbidden coils low in Steve's abdomen. “Now, you will kneel and pray for forgiveness. And tomorrow, you'll come back here. We have a lot of work ahead of us, if we want to bring you back on the right path.”
In other news, I've seen talk about this around... but I also want to put my two cents in. I don't think Benson would ever want to genuinely harm Randy (we all know how he reacted when he got shot), but I do think that Benson thinks that he actually does.
As in, he will constantly fantasize about hurting Randy in some type of way, mentally or physically as a means to put himself in a place of power above anyone and especially the guy he is so infatuated and infuriated with for seemingly being so weak (since his weakness reminds him of his own). He will think about marking him, breaking him, all sorts of things—not my business to tell you, but given the extent of the real brutalizations he committed, you can only imagine the lengths his imagination can go. Except, all of this is where his mind goes in place of sex. Benson undeniably wants to fuck Randy, and thoroughly. The thing is he is so repressed and angry his mind goes straight to violence instead, blah blah blah—you know how it is.
But, honestly, if they even somehow were able to have sex, I don't even think it'd go well. At least, not at first. Benson would probably have a flashback of some kind and Randy would have to comfort him (while probably being mildly annoyed, lol). It's honestly kinda funny. Benson is shaking and trying not to sob and Randy just feels really awkward and doesn't think he's suitable to help Benson out here, but that doesn't mean he won't try to be there for him regardless.
"character doing a c+ job of breaking the cycle of abuse" is such a crunchy dynamic forever. what if i'm giving my all to give you a better life than i had and i'm succeeding but "better" just isn't quite enough. what if my blind spots and deeply ingrained trauma and inexperience mean that you will be indelibly scarred by me despite my best efforts. what if my abuser's influence still bleeds through at times because i know nothing else. what if i go so far in the opposite direction to avoid it that i hurt you in ways i couldn't have anticipated. what if my undeniable love and unforgivable shortcomings came part and parcel with each other. what if your love and gratitude and resentment and pain came part and parcel too. what if we both knew you deserved better but i was all you had. what if we had to move forward and reckon with that. what then
