here's a lesson that i learned the hard way, and now i realize i could have avoided if i had paid better attention to Sailor Moon (as evidenced by the photo above):
in Japan, they take their shoes off in clothing store fitting rooms.
i didn't know that. so, cue me becoming absolutely mortified when i went into a little stall to try on a dress in Harajuku with my shoes still on, and coming out to find my japanese companions whispering about it......... AHHHHHHHHHH god that sucked
so now you guys know! and look, naru and.... is that supposed to be haruna?? took theirs off like good little culturally-conscious girls!
Hida Folk Village (飛騨民俗村 Hida Minzoku Mura) is an open air museum of close to 30 old farmhouses illustrating the traditional architectural styles of the mountainous regions of Japan. The village is located in the town of Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Of particular interest are the thatched and shingled roofs, such as the gasshō-zukuri-styled buildings. Many of the buildings were brought to this location from their original sites in order to preserve them. The village is quite picturesque, as it is built on a hillside overlooking the Takayama Valley and surrounds a large pond.
The structures in the village range from 100 to 500 years in age. Many are open to perusal and are filled with artifacts from their respective time periods, including splindles, silk worm raising artifacts, cooking utensils, and clothing. There is also a workshop in the village illustrating how many of Japan's famous handicrafts are made. Sometimes the village is referred to as "The village hidden in the leaf".
Guys, I miss this village so much. It was incredibly beautiful, and the entire village smelled like burning wood and incense. Also I started walking up a path and in 10 minutes oops I had climbed up the side of the mountain and suddenly had this view of the village
so it's been over one year since i left for japan...
I definitely wasn't able to keep up with this blog as much as I would have liked (who has time to blog when you're busy exploring TOKYO?!) but I'm hoping that this summer will give me the opportunity to better recap all the fun stuff that I did one year ago. I'm re-reading journal entries from last summer and remembering the less-than-stellar feelings I had about being in Japan (I was sooo homesick) but also remembering lots of funny little things that happened during my stay that I might not have initially thought worth posting. So we'll see where this summer takes us!
How big is that giant alpacasso???
I meeean considering I am 5'1 and a tiny little thing you have a decent comparison?! It was giant! And chained to the wall so no one can run away with it! ;)

Look at what this damn blizzard did to my Swimmer umbrella from Tokyo ;___;
did i ever mention the time that it was my first night in tokyo alone and i was starving so i went to the 7-11 in our neighborhood (they're on every block i swear to you) and got some sort of curry with beef
so well i got it but i also got an ice cream bar
and when i went to pay i also WON another ice cream treat! (some One Piece promotion they were doing gr8)
so i got home and welp i ate my two ice creams instead and didn't want curry anymore. so i put it in my fridge in my apartment.
well the fridge was so cold that it froze my poor curry
so when it was time to open it up, the curry and the rice at the bottom was frozen solid
and i didn't know what to do
so i tried to thaw it with my hair dryer
it did not work
and frozen rice is not edible.
and that's the story of my first night living in tokyo.
mission accomplished
please just love me
