Moiraine Damodred & Lan Mandragoran

Moiraine & Lan get a stowaway on their travels looking for the Dragon

Lan never thought Moiraine would be like this with animals. She loved Aldieb of course. But he never imagined she would insist they take the abandoned puppy with them, the one who had snuck into Moiraine’s saddle bag just outside of Cairhien. The dog had been weak and underfed, and Moiraine spent weeks feeding him by hand, kept him in a cloth sling on her chest as she rode like the tiny puppy were her child. Moiraine hated children, but it turned out she was rather fond of puppies.

The dog regained his strength, turned into a playful puppy that Moiraine named Shark after he drew blood while playfully nipping at her ankle one morning. He grew larger and Moiraine fretted about what to do with him. Ultimately, she’d left Shark at the White Tower with Siuan, and Lan watched Moiraine look twice as heartbroken when she had to say goodbye.

Shark was no longer a playful puppy when he accompanied Lan and Siuan to rescue Moiraine from the Tower of Ghenjei, weighed as much as Moiraine did when the dog laid the full weight of his body on top of her that night, when he licked tears from her face and seemed to give her a comfort that Lan and Siuan were powerless to give.

Lan takes care of a sick Moiraine:

Lan returns to his room at the inn with breakfast, opens the door, and finds Moiraine packing up their things.

“You are the worst patient!” Lan tells her because the plan was to stay until she felt better.

“That can’t be true. The worst? In the entire world?” She’s smiling at him, but she looks awful. Her nose is bright red and she’s even paler than usual.

“How did Siuan put up with you?”

“She healed me.” Moiraine smiles then adds, “Against my will.”

“I’m sure. Because you told her you were fine and definitely not sick. Just like now.”

“I am perfectly fine.”

“You almost passed out and fell off Arrow yesterday.”

“I did not.” Moiraine continues packing up their things all while every muscle in her body hurts and her vision blurs every time she stands up too quickly. “And I feel much better.”

“You feel worse.”

“I don’t!” Moiraine picks up her bag and then topples back onto the bed.

Lan groans. It’s going to be a long journey with this infuriation woman. He pulls the bag from her hands and gently pushes her back into bed, covering her with a blanket. “I can feel that you need water and rest.”

“I don’t,” Moiraine protests.

“Bond,” Lan says, tucking the blanket around Moiraine.

“Maybe a short nap.”
