initial designs for client Creating breakfast on the move, Idea 1: mash and walk, a product designed to fit on the bottom of a shoe which enables you to mash food while you walk, creating smoothies, boiled egg sandwich filling, hummus, mash potatoe if desired. Mash to your hearts content! Idea 2: a toaster that is powered by each of your legs being attached to the ends of a magnet which is then pulled in and out a coil of wire each step that is taken, generating an electric current. ambitious perhaps, a lot of experimentation needed! Playing with the senses Idea 3: a dish that looks like tomatoe and cheese pasta, actually a strawberry and vanilla sauce with grated white chocolate, the pasta perhaps normal wheat or maybe a different dough made to be sweet but still look like pasta, to finish off a nice sponge cake? I think not, bread instead of sponge the filling, tomato and cheese, or maybe carrot/sweet potato in a chicken-gravy like sauce to look like marmalade, open to debate fillings! comfort restaurant Idea 4: embrace the comforting smell and feel of carrot and coriander soup with a pond full of it, surrounded by beds and sofas (similar to that of clients home) instead of tables and chairs, where they sell all of moms classic dishes and garlic bread and hunters chicken, even the staff dressed in typical mom clothes, extra blankets if still feeling under the weather!
My client notes. This was the first time doing a client based project where I actually met a real person to ask questions (wasn't just a made up client) and we were going to come up with a design together. I found it quite difficult to pinpoint what I wanted to bring to the table and it felt like I was just offering a service, it wasn't a two way project. I have a broad range of skills and enjoy many materials, my best feature being variety. After creating some ideas/initial designs I feel I have managed to put my personality into the project and come up with some fun and exciting ideas which hopefully Charlotte will enjoy too.
wearable food - jeon ju http://www.yeonju.me/work_wf.php
at 30 minutes in, Mad Hatters Tea Party food designed b y James 'Jocky' Petrie. The contestants have to recreate food’s that look like something but actually taste completely different: a sandwich that’s actually made from cake filled with tomatoes - strawberries with lettuce - green chocolate, a cup of tea that’s actually a bacon broth, a victoria sponge thats actually a rapseed oil cake base, greek yoghurt and apricot jam filling and air-rated white chocolate top that looks like sponge, a custard that’s the flavours of a chicken sandwich and marmalade on toast that’s actually orange fizzy jelly and coffee.
These foods would play with the senses and be completely different to eat to what the brain would expect to taste.

Marti Guixe
Mealing “Mealing” describes the act of eating a meal, as well as the social concept of a relational meal. Mealing is a performance and meal-in-motion for approximately 80 people within an enclosed space. Participants will be given ceramic glasses with “edible microsnacks” adhered to their surface and instructions for eating them while performing small gestures that will require each person to interact with their fellow diners.

Challenging what restaurants and meals are, a social interaction where usually you wouldn’t speak to the other groups of people in the room, this project forcing people to interact with others while having a meal.
restaurant design and food experiences.
restaurants are interesting because the environment where eating takes place can really effect how you feel about the food; things like lighting, settings, what you’re sat on, how close to other people you are can have an impact.
Marti Guixe’s candy restaurant- ‘formalises the occasional act of eating sweets by creating a ritual for it that mimics that of everyday,any-time-of-day consumption’ it is configured like an ordinary restaurant. i love this project because it’s really playful, the build-a-burger as a main course and drink is cola bottle really made me laugh.
Eat Love- Marije Vogelzang, food concepts by eating-designer.
Vogelzang approaches food with the attitude that it’s more than just what we eat, a very playful material. She stretches what can be achieved with basic ingredients or the whole concept of a meal, challenging what it means ‘to eat’
"There is no material that comes as close to human beings as food."
this book focus’s around the 8 philosophical areas of inspiration that vogelzang has developed to inspire food creatives: the senses , nature , culture , society , technique, psychology, science, action.
These projects I found relevant to ideas i had for my client about wearing food or using it to create jewellery from.
I also really liked the concept of using a mathematical sequence to determine amounts in food.

Concrete review
concrete has a lot of potential, with better moulds a high standard of finish could be achieved but found a high success in the use of wallpaper to create a texture whether it imprints completely or not.
The actual use of a concrete cup perhaps isn't the most practical, raises questions about if people would actually want to drink from it and put it right up to their mouth? alternatively could be used as a pencil pot or a general holder. To develop the plates further would suit the practicality of the material, imagining restaurants could serve food on them if hygienically made, but then where on the plate does the textures need to be, round the edges? all over? just in the middle so when food is eaten then revealed?

refined concrete cup
I tried to match the wallpaper pattern up so that there wasn’t so much of a definitive seem along the one side of the cup and also wanted the hollow part to be much deeper; the first experiments the inside cup floated up so i weighed this one down. I also left the cup overnight to dry which meant the wallpaper had been embedded into the concrete although i really like the white covering this gives, happy accident.
Concrete Cups
plates and bowl experiments
plastic texture: the surface of the plate is very smooth and the shiny effect of the plastic has transferred however there are quite a lot of air bubbles ruining the smooth sleek finish. this opens up other opportunities to then fill these air bubbles with another material? a contrasting colour? or maybe one that would blend in?
leaf texture: the concrete got underneath the sides of the leaf so i was unable to pull it all out to reveal the imprint of the veins but what did come out left behind a nice subtle texture, solidifying a shape that is usually quite fragile.
Bowl: Very chunky and heavy. there isn’t much definition of shape and isn't very much surface on show to actually create a texture with other than the indent of the bowl, which is maybe a bit too small. i tried to use wallpaper to print onto this surface but was unable to peel it away.
concrete plate - Vidonori
minimal shape, definite edges creating a sleek sophisticated aesthetic. This type of plate would be used in a fancy restaurant to serve meals on or perhaps as a sharing platter but not as an everyday use.
