“Pray tell, Phoenix,” Unyielding started as he always did, broaching the velvety darkness of night with a gentle whisper. “What color are your wings again?”

Scarred fingers ghosted over the bend of Phoenix’s wings, sneaking beneath the clouds of duvet to trace longing into the jut of hollow bone. Unseeing sockets were sealed behind a hardened layer of pure gold, forming a gilded mask intended to punish those of such little faith. Phoenix flinched at the prospect of another’s gaze on him, the jerk of his body more instinct than reason.

“…Blue,” he muttered, easing himself closer to Unyielding’s touch. “They’re blue.”

“As blue as the sky?”

Fingertips gingerly brushed the edges of star-speckled vanes, following the astral path of constellations littering folded primaries.

“Perhaps.”

Unyielding’s smile was wistful, bitter and sweet and bleeding saccharine into the birdcage they shared. “I’m sure they’re beautiful.” A hearty exhalation, bordering on the cusp of a sigh. “I wish I could see them.”

Phoenix blinked slowly, for he had no words to comfort. How could he soothe the memories of molten liquid cast upon Unyielding’s face? How could he stitch together the scar tissue marring pure wings of white, the talons of invisible thorns digging into sacred flesh?

Dorothea: That's because you love her.
