okay so i have gone on a yap elsewhere about how my ideal thomas death would go, but that's not really happening if decayed ends next week (wtf sobs).
he sacrifices himself --- for the city, or maybe even just stella. i feel like ive talked a lot on why a sacrifice would be a compelling and satisfying end for him, but ill shorten it to: the fact that his 'great legacy' could be so small it's not ever going to be known, and he makes peace with that. a wholely selfish, recognition-seeking character finds a last ditch of comfort in a selfless, thankless act. there's a lot of bits and pieces i could add to this to explain why i think this could be interesting and how it might work out but im. not bothered! (i think you'd have to be very careful managing your time in the session to make this feel natural and build up to it; not dragging scenes out, but also letting important moments breathe, which is something I think has fallen flat occasionally. thomas isn't in the right spot for this in the present moment, so something needs to change his mind-- i think saps' death can certainly be a catalyst for it, but id be disappointed if us as the viewers are just expected to accept that as reasoning for suicidal sacrifice.)
now, this really depends on the tone and what message they want the series to have, but they could give him a very purposefully dissatisfying ending.
thomas goes home. he doesn't have any new friends with him, nothing to his name, maybe he even loses his notebook.
he returns to his home community. they barely noticed he was gone, frankly. everythings the exact same -- everything's clean, everyone's alive. there's nothing to mark he was ever gone, except a scuff mark on his shoe and a blood stain in his bandana, both quickly replaced by fresh new clothes.
another day of learning things he can never have use for. another day of people ignoring him. another tight, polite smile at the 100% on the page.
everything is the exact same. agustus was right: it was all for nothing.
