"Who will pray for you (me), when your (my) body's gone."
A short written analysis, which borderline crosses a narrative writing, about Thomas5200's character in State 2.5 and Decayed & Decrepit
In short, I truly think 2.5!Thomas and DaD!Thomas would absolutely despise each other. While it might be too far fetched to say DaD!Thomas would hate someone to that extent, 2.5!Thomas—with the minimum knowledge we have about his character—is a different story. Their morals and beliefs simply conflicted with one another no matter how similar they look.
At the end of the day, 2.5!Thomas is a realist. He had accepted from the start that he will and has done many unforgivable things. Considering that in his speech, despite having justification about why The Conspiracy had done what they did, he didn't run from the consequences. Rather, he fully embraced it. He turned himself in and accepted a death penalty without hesitation.
(He was the last Conspiracy survivor after all. No one would mourn his death.)
DaD!Thomas however, constantly lives in an idealistic version of his world. He's naive, a bit insensitive, and fundamentally selfish; all of those traits are the exact opposite of 2.5!Thomas. DaD!Thomas had done what he himself had assumed to be an irreparable mistake, but rather than owning up to it like what 2.5!Thomas had done, DaD!Thomas chose to avoid the consequences of his actions. He's terrified of it, terrified of people knowing the truth and justifies himself in every situation.
(Considering how he lost Augustus because of the same truth, I wasn’t surprised to see him further lock everything away behind a lie.)
This exact conflicting views of their mistakes and how they had dealt with it would immediately spark a form of hatred, mostly with 2.5!Thomas absolutely despising the other (him? Naive and loved? An odd concept to begin with). To rub more salt on the wound is that DaD!Thomas actually got his happy ending, with Flux alive and well.
Ignoring the fact that 2.5!Thomas is an international terrorist, I think a very short description of their character can be boiled down to truths vs lies.
How can it be that someone who is so fundamentally different from him achieve such a good ending to his story while he's left to rot? He would think. Would this proof that all his morals and beliefs are wrong? And that maybe, just maybe, he’d still have everyone he loved my his side if he was just a little bit different.
(No. The truth was that there was nothing else he could do to save The Conspiracy. They were fundamentally different people even when they look the same. DaD!Thomas was just an oddball of a person in such a devastating world, if 2.5!Thomas had been in his position, he’d still lose everyone.)
Adding onto this, is a very iconic verse from StarKid's "Nerdy Prudes Must Die". I think this verse fits a bit too well with the dynamic I just written out, with 2.5!Thomas practically forcing DaD!Thomas' eyes to wake up.
"I want you to repeat after me
Will you pray for me (Will you pray for me)
When I'm gone? (When I'm gone?)
Or until another Richie comes along"
Or is this the eternal dark without a dawn?"
These two verses, I think, fits well with 2.5!Thomas' mindset. While these sentences are said to mock DaD!Thomas' life, I do believe there is some frustration hidden behind his words. A bit of truth in them, if you will. Because as I said before, no one would be there to even mourn 2.5!Thomas as he's unfortunately the antagonist of the story, complete opposite of the (canonically) well-loved DaD!Thomas.
"Who will pray for you (Who will pray for me)
When your body is gone? (When my body is gone?)
This is the consequence for what you've done"
And now this last verse, the ever pitiful projection coming from a miserable man to another equally miserable one. Because at the end of the day, both had lost something because of their mistakes even when the damage are indefinite. 2.5!Thomas lost everyone and everything, yet he was at peace at the end of his journey. DaD!Thomas lost so little people, yet the lies and guilt will forever haunt him for the rest of his life.
TLDR, this is just an excuse to add NPMD’s lyrics onto a written think piece of mine. I’m also a bit too obsessed with the thought of every version of Thomas meeting one another, so the song didn’t help at all.
