i do think it’s one of the subtler and more persistent myths about media under capitalism that popularity & appeal in mass media are somehow democratically earned, as if anything that gets popular does so because of the sublimated Will of the People regardless of who’s bankrolling it … as though corporations aren’t, historically, highly invested in manufacturing the same desires that they cater to, & as though the field of choices that consumers have to begin with are almost always circumscribed by what corporations are willing to offer to begin with. which is not to say that popular demand doesn’t play an active role in production/distribution, just that the role it plays isn’t an entirely meritocratic, utopian one to say the least
