There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable. I simply am not there.

Hot take: i would like to see a female Patrick Bateman. Not a genderbent per se, but You could 100% adapt American Psycho to a female protagonist.

What makes A.P so good is not only the killings and violence, but the way they're used in a satiric critique to the wealthy yuppie culture, toxic masculinity and Even repressing homosexuality because of societal standards.

Understanding that, i'm sure a female director/writer would be able to tranform that into a questioning to double standards between men and women, internalized misogyny.

But now that i think about it, if we wanted for the female character to stay true to Patrick's, they would need to do something more alike to The Substance.
