#i feel like the whole of the story of da2  #was simply answering the question of  #what would it take to drive someone to this point?  #every aspect written with this moment in mind  #and it would be so simple to just say ‘they’re evil. they’re crazy. they’re a demon.’  #instead they present you with the type of person who would devote all their time to running a free clinic  #who would be surrounded by people willing to attack hawke just to protect their healer  #who would save you again and again throughout the game  #saving the life of your sibling in the deep roads  #healing the mind of varric’s brother even if just for a moment  #merrill standing over pol’s body and saying  #‘You can help him can’t you Anders? You can heal anyone!’  #and he can’t. but that’s how she sees him  #even with all their arguing  #that’s who he is  #that’s what he does  #and this final moment is not a departure from that - it’s BECAUSE of that  #they make sure that this story is personal - that hawke or hawke’s sister is directly involved and at risk  #and every abuse that hawke bears witness to over the course of the game  #every time you want to save someone  #and can’t  #is the game trying to make sure you understand  #exactly how a man like that could do something like this  #it has to be horrific or else this moment has no impact  #but you have to understand why it happened or else there was no point to any of this (  @carabas)
