right out the gate with what might be my favorite that I've read recently. technically it's an au but even if that's not really your thing I REALLY urge you to give it a try. if there's anything I love more than a character study, it's a character study wrapped up in d/s dynamics and gorgeous prose. the dynamic specifically is SO well written and tangible between them. loved ilya's yearning, loved this specific brand of shane's submission, and while I'm usually a hard sell for the childhood friends - ish realm of au's, I was so fucking sold on this from the first paragraph. it's very 'buzzy', as the kids are saying these days dsgjdhfgjg. can't recommend it enough!

I will admit that I had my doubts about how to make this setup work within the confines of canon, but it DOES. there are still two chapters left to go and I am eagerly awaiting the next one. this is a BRILLIANT premise, I can't believe I hadn't thought of it or come across anything similar before. also as someone who can click into just about any characterization of the hollander's if it's well written enough, I liked that this one didn't frame her as doing what she does solely because of love and care and parental duty. some of it is just. a clear invasion of privacy and crossed boundaries jdhgfksjhdgf and I'm a sucker for that nuance with every character, but especially digging into shane and his parents specifically.

I read part one when it came out and then eagerly waited for part two, which was just as thick with nuance, thought provoking world building and characterization, and overall amazing writing. do be sure to check the tags, this includes some elements of what I would call murky dubcon, but within the context I think it makes sense for the story. it's got layers to bite into, so take some time to sit with it if you plan to read!!!
