Essentially ripping up the US constitution into shreds, the Patriot Act was introduced after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City. As fear and a desperate need to heighten security grasped the country, the piece of legislation passed without a lot of dissenting voices as the government took advantage of this widespread panic as opportunistic as that administration was. Yes, I am shading Bush, and no, I’m not sorry. However, it has since with labelled unconstitutional, and to some, including the admin writing this very post, it is not just that. It is evil.

The United States constitution protects Americans from unreasonable search and seizure by mandating that before anyone’s property is taken by the state, a warrant is issued, implying that that particular object being seized will contribute to the overall and collective safety of the community. However, the Patriot Act signed legitimised the use of an investigation tactic called ‘Sneak and Peak warrants’. Let me cite for you a US Legal clinic website:

A sneak and peek search warrant is a warrant that authorizes a police officer to physically enter into private premises without the owner’s or the occupant’s permission or knowledge to conduct a search of the premises. Generally, such entry requires a breaking and entering. However, this warrant does not authorize law enforcement officers to seize any property from the premises.

The Federal government can also conduct surveillance on targeted persons even without any probable cause, and the target is not required to be contacted and cannot challenge this mandate.

ThoughtCo goes on to list some things that the Patriot Act allows the government to do:

If adopted it would allow the government to wiretap a person for 15 days without a warrant; federal agents could secretly arrest people and provide no information to their family, the media or their attorney until charges are brought, no matter how long that took; and it would allow Americans to be stripped of their citizenship for even unknowingly helping a group that is connected to an organization deemed to be terrrorist.

We, the Wiretappers, frankly find it naive to believe that the government will not take advantage of the sheer power that the Patriot Act grants to them. At the end of the day, the good American people should not need to give up so much of their liberties for a level of freedom that cannot even be guaranteed.
