why is esme so drawn to what's in and what's out ? was there something that sparked that in her ?
i am answering this a whole month later because that is precisely how long it took me to reach a conclusion that i am satisfied with !
i think it’s safe to say that no matter the time or place , there will always be trends : there will always be things that are considered cool or uncool , and the line between them can be very thin but very definite .
esmé’s proclivity for the in-ness of everything is , in my eyes , a way for her to assume power . being able to keep up with the never - ending trends and shifts in popularity would most definitely have advantages in the world ( or at least , the city ) that esmé lives in . people no doubt look to her to see what’s she wearing , what she’s buying , what she’s eating . she has influence . additionally , being the sixth most important financial advisor while married to a nice and rich man like jerome and living in a lavish penthouse like she does would only raise her up further in people’s esteem , seeing as how materialistic they seem to be .
what really sparked all of this off for me though was when i saw the books that were on a table in 667 dark avenue . seeing as how i highly doubt that jerome would be reading books written by she.ryl sandberg and the like , we can presume that they’re esmé’s , and i can absolutely see her , at a young age , catching onto the fact that the people around her are consumerists through and through , and deciding to use that to her advantage . by educating herself about the whole concept of what’s in and what’s out and almost dedicating her lifestyle to it , she’s essentially giving herself an enormous amount of power and control over the people she surrounds herself with .
