                                       it’s a dramatic answer, & heavy on the sassafras. this is a two part dare, & he only has one pass to use. the frown full of sorrow turns into a scowl full of righteous anger. how dare he make him use a pass so quickly. & here is also another dilemma presented to the youngest snicket : does he make a choice to drink such a vile beverage, for eternity ; or does he simply change his personality for one week ?

                                        lemony snicket simply does not finish his sentence, but merely removes himself from his chair & settles face down on the floor. are you happy, jim snicket ? you’ve broken your brother. he gives up.

when in a terrifying situation, there are twothings we all often wish for: the situation to change into something notterrifying immediately ( which hardly ever happens on its own, but is still ourbiggest hope ), or for someone to understand just how terrifying our situationis and do whatever they can to put an end to our terror ( ultimately another wayto wish for the first thing, except it involves someone else ). whatever one ofthose things you find yourself wishing for, they both involve some level ofcomfort.

just how dire your situation is, of course,determines the level of comfort you might wish for. if your situation is, forinstance, fearing that your legs will collapse in on themselves from havingstood much too long on a much too long and tiring journey on a trolley withonly three already occupied seats, the sole comfort you might be seeking for isthat of someone standing up and offering you their seat. 

if your situationinvolves having to follow the tracks of said trolley through the middle of anempty forest in the middle of the night with three suspected murderous hatmakers on the hunt for anyone who might be hunting them, the only comfortingthing would be an associate arriving with the news that the  hat makers have been found and the manhunt is over, so there is no need for you to stay in the forest a moment longer.

but as you and i know, dear reader, comfort is ahard thing to find. when my associate, who was also my brother, uttered thewords ‘we’ll just keep each other as safeas we can’, i felt as one feels on one of those sleepless nights where, nomatter how desperately you seek comfort by rolling from side to side of yourbed, up and down, knees bent and straight and your elbows up and down and anyinfinite number of bends and twists you can possibly attempt, comfort eludesyou.

his words felt like that tingly feeling on yourarm that starts crawling just as you think you’ve found the perfect way tosleep. there should have been nothing more safe, more reassuring and thus morecomforting than my older brother saying he would take care of me. however, it wassomething about the words ‘each other’ and ‘as we can’ that tingled.  they tingled because they weren’t safe andreassuring. they were uncertainties.

 uncertainty when it came to my own comfortwas comfortable enough. uncertainty when it came to my brother … it was beyond any comfort.

𝟭. although she can pole vault through the city ( & she has - but believe me , it's not an easy feat even for a former olympic hopeful ) , she was gifted web shooters by an anonymous donor . it was a dark & stormy night - & she was sat in some diner nursing a bruised ego with some strawberry milkshakes - & there they were , in a cute lil box with a cute lil bow .
