Dream Askew Part 1 - Sprouting
Our first scene takes place in Sister Patience’s chapel. Called ‘the fuckken chapel’ by most of the locals of The Nest, the lower and more damp and cave-like parts of Tower Five; the name leads the congregation to have to make repeated cover-ups on their signage. The Chapel is based in the ruins of an old gourmet restaurant that was once known as Arby’s 2: The Sequel to Arby’s. Aside from the usual trappings of an overgrown former gourmet restaurant, there is also a massive lobster tank with a mysteriously humanoid moss figure curled inside the murky water.

Dream Askew Prologue
Recently I’ve started running a game of Dream Askew, so I’m going to start doing write-ups for it on Tumblr.
Vic (@headstomp) as The Mothman (The Stitcher) a mysterious figure shrouded in many layers of plant matter and fabric, who fixes things by splicing them with strange overgrowth. Their workshop functions are woodworking and hydroponics. They supply themself by taking apart the old to furnish the new. They have relationships with a semi-feral dire racoon (direcoon) named Dwayne and a black marketeer they owe a small fortune to. Not to be mistaken for the original Mothman of Point Pleasant, WV. Wipo (@wipomatic) as Puck (The Iris) a legally blind void-child that takes people’s memories on request and uses a sounds and vague shapes of an old video game handheld to cope. Their psychic gifts are Memory Harvesting and Lucky Guesses. The Maelstrom told them it would shelter them from an repercussions. They have relationships with Foxtail, a weird eater they created and Skye, a weepy transgirl whose past they’re erasing. Katter (@dockatterson) as Sister Patience (The Torch) a trans woman who’s fled the harsh confines of her strict Coven and started her own religious following, focusing on forgiveness through sacrifice. Her rituals are Letting the Blood (“Spend your blood so that the weaker among us may save theirs.”) and Tripping the Circuit (“Child of noise, endure the silence of death and you may hear the throbbing hymn that binds us.”). The looming threat that she alone understands is that When we abandon our historical rites and bonds, evil things grow in the empty spaces left behind. She has relationships with the coven she was asked to leave and her feral muse. Auggie (@augmentalize) as Mimosa Tisane (The Hawker) a gargoyle delivery worker that glides between the towers to hawk xir wares, using a strange makeshift glider that gives xir the appearance of wings. Xir provisions are easy food, deliveries, and a new soft drug called Brightseed. Xir accepted currencies are barter and whispered secrets. Xie has relationships with the pissy killjoy nextdoor and the society-types xie delivers to.

21- Strega Nona
21- Strega Nona (1975)
Taking a mental health break from hyper-analysis to offer this pasta witch.
Strega Nona is the titular character behind the children’s book of the same name written by Tomie dePaola. The story is about an old witch who is renowned in her village for her remedies and matchmaking abilities. She hires a young helper named Big Anthony to assist her in her work as she is getting too old to work alone. One day, Strega Nona is cooking a magic pasta. Big Anthony doesn’t pay close enough attention, however, and while he sees Strega Nona singing a magic spell to produce the pasta, he misses the necessary spellcraft required to stop the production. The result is that macaroni noodles flood the entire town as the spell gets carried away. Strega Nona gives Anthony a fork saying “the punishment must fit the crime,” and makes him eat all of the pasta. The two characters, Strega Nona and Big Anthony, have appeared in nearly a dozen additional books by dePaola, however the first is the most well known, winning several awards for children’s picture books.
The moral of the story? Pay Attention. I love any time a witch, especially an older one, is shown in a positive light in a children’s tale. Even in a children’s book, the story conveys the wisdom and magic associated with witches, and goes so far as making Strega Nona a moral compass. She’s happy, kind, and well respected around town, the latter aspect greatly differentiating her from other witches in this series. While her personality is the inverse of the traditional witch, her physical appearance, as that of an old, frumpy, squat, and big nosed woman does fit the standard image. She’s shown with a cauldron (pasta pot) and various animal familiars surrounding her. Similar to the Witch from Room on a Broom (#75), La Befana (#68), and even Eglantine Price (#97), Strega Nona joins the ranks of positive witches geared towards and beloved by children.
Pasta witch speaks to me on a spiritual level. Also a gastronomic one.
