but I think it’s about the pain of falling in love with someone when you’ve already resigned yourself to not loving ever again. 

someone breaking down your walls… that’s not always sunshine and rainbows especially when you’ve become closed off. it’s about encountering someone that for the first time ever or in a long time forces you to go against your OWN toxic habits (shutting close relationships out, avoiding being vulnerable with someone, avoiding accepting love because you don’t think you’re deserving of it)

“my best laid plan, your sleight of hand” - the plan was to be alone/not get in too deep in a relationship, sleight of hand is when something happens so quick your brain doesn’t even register it. in one swift moment he broke down her walls - cue the next line:

“my barren land I am ash from your fire” - remember her use of “you built a fire just to keep me warm” - and barren land i think alludes to that breaking down of walls, open for him to see all of her (think of the archer “can you see right through me” also)

“it still hurts from when they pulled me apart but what you did was just as dark” - sometimes being on the receiving end of tender love and care can just be the cruelest feeling ( “i love you aint that the worst thing you’ve ever heard” ) it’s like how dare you how dare you come and make me vulnerable and soft and see through all my walls. and also like knowing that you come with a lot of ‘baggage’ that you’re scared to burden others with and just the fear of putting that in someone’s hands. 

taylor explores the sort of dark side of falling in a beautiful fulfilling non-toxic love a lot (i.e. Treacherous) and i think people are missing this key theme in her music. 

There are certain skills and techniques involved in effectively conveying a story in prose — things involving figurative language and word choice and pacing — and those are distinct from the skills of storytelling, with its plot and character and world building.

To be a good writer, you have to be a good storyteller. But to be a storyteller you don’t have to write books. Stories can be games and comics and podcasts and movies and tabletop sessions and interconnected snippets and glimpses of a world. And all forms of storytelling are valid and important and necessary.

But I worry sometimes that people who have stories to tell too often feel like they need to write books, because of the relatively low barrier to entry. People often write books when what they really want is to make movies or games or comics but they lack the skills or resources to create these ambitious projects.
