So no, your crotchety old Grandpa isn’t racist because he’s just a product of his times, he’s racist because for eighty years he’s been leaning on that old tried and true ‘treat other people like they’re lesser than he is’ shtick to prop up his fragile ego. To make up for the fact that deep down he knows he’s just a weak little man who feels dwarfed and insignificant when he thinks about how big and varied and unknowable the world really is and tries to cope by narrowing it all down to a safe, cozy little box of reality he can handle and fuck everyone who’s left on the outside of those margins.
