Minimal Footprint Hedonists

Now that we moved successfully into our new workshop and things are getting quite more cosy we  started working the last weekends on our new mission: combining our pedal powered monsters with a solar module that we got as a gift from einleuchtend e.V. Its worth checking out their webpage, they did already a lots of cool projects. 

The goal is to connect them and generate enough (reliable) and long-lasting electricity for small appliances on festivals until July. That could be a small Hi-Fi system or other electrical consumers. We tested our generators for their true output with and without a storage (car battery) and had a wide range of output. Per generator it went from 30Watt each generator, up to 250 Watt (combined) and the resistance was higher on the side that started first pedaling. We will need to see how it works if we connect a third generator and if we get less resistance when we have more bikes connected consecutive in one circuit. That is going to be exciting to see.

Since yesterday we have a new place for our Bike-Experiments: Funkhaus Grünau. It is located in the outskirts of Berlin, right beside the beatuiful river Dahme and the traditional Regattastrecke. Funkhaus Grünau is a wonderful space, where magic things happen.

The former boathouse was designed by architect Otto Zbrzezny in the style of brick expressionism and has an impressive history. Apart of the beautiful location getting to know the history of the building puts any doubt away that you need to pay us a visit: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funkhaus

It is used now as an shared open space for all kind of projects (art, recycling, handcrafts etc.) that are open for anyone that wants to participate in them.

Just before Christmas we were invited from RÜTLI-WEAR @ Siebdruckwerkstatt Neukoelln, to present our finished generators. Why not moving the living room into the public?

Wir werden erst einmal auf Deutsch umsteigen in diesem Blog, das erscheint uns einfach praktischer.

Ein kleines Update, was wir die letzte Woche so gemacht haben:

Wir haben eine Überholung der mechanischen Verbindung von Lichtmaschine und Rollentrainer vorgenommen, so dass sich mittlerweile zwei Lichtmaschinen fest am jeweiligen Rollentrainer (stationäre Lagerung des Hinterrades, Lagerbock; siehe Foto: Aufbau) befinden. Das Drehmoment und die Drehzahl des angetriebenen Fahrradhinterrades, welches durch den Rollentrainer in der Luft hängt, wird über einen Keilrippenriemen auf eine Lichtmaschine mit Rillenflansch übertragen. Für einen Schaltungstest werden die beiden Lichtmaschinen verkabelt, sodass sie zu Betriebsbeginn über einen Ankerstrom für die Statorwicklungen der Lichtmaschine verfügen (Starterbatterie), diesen später auch selber erzeugen können und ihren Strom an die Spannungswandlerschaltung (siehe Foto: Verkabelung) abgeben. Ein erster separater Test der Schaltung und der zwei aufgebauten Fahrradgeneratoren insgesamt verlief zum Teil erfolgreich. Der eine Fahrradgenerator erzeugt eine gleichmäßige Spannung bei moderater Tretkraft. Diese lässt sich gut über einen Phasenkanal der Spannungswandler auf 12 Volt herunterregeln. Bei dem zweiten Fahrradgenerator treten allerdings im Dauerbetrieb noch zu große Spannungsamplituden auf. Dieses Verhalten wird im nächsten Schritt näher untersucht, bevor ein Zusammenführen der Phasen beider Fahrradgeneratoren über die Spannungswandlerschaltung erfolgen kann. Es muss also der eine Phasenkanal sowie die Lichtmaschine mit besagtem Spannungsamplituden-Problem auf ihre Funktionstüchtigkeit überprüft werden. Des weiteren werden demnächst die mechanisch festen Verbindungen (Lichtmaschine-Rollentrainer) der zwei verbleibenden Fahrradgeneratoren hergestellt und die zweite, für größere Ströme ausgelegte, Spannungswandlerschaltung im Betrieb getestet.

The last few weeks we have spent our time to improve our existing two Pedalpower generators. The main objective is to minimize and optimize the functionality of the electrical circuit and the power converter, but above all to install the alternators stable as possible on the home trainers where the bikes are clamped in while reducing the space we need for the circuity. The aim in the next few weeks to merge 2X2 modells of these types, and to obtain a power of about 200 watts each. So then the first experiments with appliances will follow.

Die letzten Wochen haben wir damit verbracht unsere ersten zwei Pilottretgeneratoren zu verbessern. Dabei ging es hauptsäclich darum, die elektrische Schaltung und den Stromumwandler zu minimieren und perfektionieren, vor allem aber die Lichtmaschinen stabil und mit möglichst wenig Platzverlust an die Hometrainer zu installieren.

Die neue Spannungswandlerschaltung ist aufgebaut und erfolgreich getestet. Die wesentlichen Unterschiede zur vorherigen Schaltung bestehen sind vor allem:

+ kompaktere/ geschütztere Bauform + ein höherer zulässiger Strom (7,5 Ampere pro Generator) + ein separater Schalter zum Betrieb eines Lüfters zum Kühlen der Kühlkörper der Schottky-Dioden/ Transistoren + komfortable Kabelklemmen für Leitungen zur und von der Schaltung weg

Es wird demnächst getestet, wie sich die Schaltung im Dauerbetrieb aufheizt und ob die Kühlleistung des Lüfters ausreicht. Auch wird die alte Spannungswandlerschaltung neu verlötet und kompakter gestaltet, sodass ein Test mit vier Generatoren durchgeführt werden kann.

The new voltage converter circuit is built and successfully tested. The main differences to the previous wiring consist mainly in:

Compact and more protected design

A higher allowable current (7.5 amps per generator)

A separate switch for the operation of a fan for cooling the heat sink of the Schottky diodes / transistors

Convenient cable clamps for cables to and from the circuit path

Our trip to the Recycled Creativity Festival to Grünau, in the outskirts of Berlin last weekend was betted in a charming atmosphere at an amazing site, just beside the beautiful river Dahme, which has a long history of Regatta and sailing sports. Passing by a bunch of old traditional rowing- and sailing clubs, the old and massive Funkhaus Grünau appears.

The building was was used as a radio station from 1947 to 1956 for the state radio the Soviet occupation zone and later GDR (DDR) used it as a radio station. The reactivated building that the collective of wonderful people are refurbishing and is used now for Open Source Workshops, worshiping DIY - Do It Yourself! From crazy selfmade body-extensions, toys for all occasions made out of bike parts or the hilarious and impressive Trash Regatta, where 10 teams built boats made out of pure trash, you could find a lot of crazy, interesting people hanging out there.

Inspired by this awesome stage we tried to feed some stereo systems with our bike generators. It was very helpful for us to realize that many times there are plenty of unexpected problems with self made pedal powered generators that you don't expect. We generated successfully enough energy to power a small stereo and had music playing. Unfortunately we had then some problems with the cables and therefore couldn't manage a clear sound. With future optimizations like a more compact and protected circuit and a better adapted sound system that should be resolved.

We are participating at the Recycled Creativity Festival with our first pedal-powered Generators. The show takes place this Saturday, 22nd of September in Grünau, just in the outskirtes of Berlin. We will be testing in the afternoon, from around 16h on our first generators, by connecting tools, lights and later on making music out from pedalpower. There will be as well a bunch of upcycling workshops, a funny Schrottregatta on the river, with selfmade monster-ships and party until late...JOIN IN, CREATE AND HAVE FUN!
