some people really need to understand that there’s a difference between saying ‘they’re a good character’ and ‘they’re a good person’
Me: This villain is a really good character!
Some fucker at tumbler dot com: Um you do realize they KILL people right? Or are you OKAY with that??? You’re cool with murder???? Wouldn’t mind if they killed your family!!!??? I’m calling the police
They’re a good person: I agree with their actions and think that their intentions are in the right place most of the time according to my moral compass, and if they were real, I’d generally call them a ‘good person’.
They’re a good Character: They’re well-written, interesting or fun to watch or listen to etc, compelling, or they elicit the emotional reaction in me that they are intended to elicit. Even if that emotional reaction is fear, disgust, hatred, etc.
A ‘good character’ can be ANY kind of person. What makes a ‘good person’ and a ‘good character’ are very different. If all of the characters were ‘good people’, guess what… there’s no story, because there’s no conflict.
