a vision came to me
happy mothers day to them <3
Something I've always loved about Skyrim was something very specific -- a line from the quest The Cure for Madness, in which Cicero, still unseen, shouts through the Dawnstar sanctuary: "could you at least... slow down a bit? I'm not what I used to be."
Even before I really started paying attention to Cicero and loving the character as much as I do, that one line instantly clicked as a double-entendre after having read his journals. The first and most obvious meaning to "I'm not what I used to be," was his age. Cicero is canonically in his 30s-40s by the time we see him in Skyrim, and on a surface level he's talking about how run-down he physically feels. But the second meaning is what's most intriguing. He takes the phrase "I'm not what I used to be" literally, in that the line represents how much he'd changed from his former self throughout the course of worshipping the Night Mother, being alone with her for at least 10 years, and finally arriving in Skyrim and seeing Astrid trying to take a personal hold over the whole Dark Brotherhood.
That line is the first blatant signal to the player character (at that point in the game, the Listener) that Cicero is so much more self aware than he ever openly lets on. And that one line is what fully cemented my love for Cicero just as a whole during my first Skyrim playthrough.

What do you mean Skyrim isn't a dating simulator?
Body pillow designs of Cicero is genuinely one of my favorite genres of fanart of that sexy man.
Part of why im so drawn to Cicero is the infinite hunger for recognition/love that seems to stem from him being human, as well as the ever present denial of said recognition/love that stems from his role in the brotherhood.
There's this like. "catholic" guilt that's been baked into the very essence of his character (using the term catholic loosely bc i'm not religious in any way). Cicero craves the attention of the Night Mother, but he immediately denies himself this desire to be seen and appreciated for his efforts, because he is not the one who is "worthy" of all of that. He's a vital part of the order and he knows that! Without the Mother, they wouldn't have a link to the Dread Father. Of course, the rest of the brotherhood is also important; without the listener, they'd have no link to the Mother; without a speaker to redistribute the contracts, the order would be running on hopes and dreams; without the siblings, the order would be an idea and not a living, breathing organisation...
It's really interesting how Cicero is both the ideal member of the order (pious, takes care of the matron, is loyal to the tenets) and an absolute freak (prideful, no disregard for his fellow siblings, would kill the listener if there was no other way). I like to believe that he was actually chosen by the Mother-- he had to have been elected to get the title of the keeper, so it's not like he just likes to do it for fun. If we disregard the fact that they just needed a narrative continuation of the db in skyrim, he survived the destruction of the order in cyrodiil and managed to make it to skyrim to continue their legacy. He survived ten years hidden in some cavern or whatever with the Mother and as a result, went mad. Or at least partially mad, because he displays some VERY real moments of lucidity in certain parts of the game (the switch between third and first person; addressing himself as Cicero but still somehow talking about himself using pronouns like I/me or the possessive my). Maybe the Night Mother "gifted" him the Laughter, the Jester in his head so he wouldn't feel so alone? To add to the "chosen one" thought, if you summon the spectral assassin (Lucien) before your confrontation with Cicero in Dawnstar, he mentions that the Dread Father wouldn't want him to be killed or something along those lines
This is so well said, and I couldn't agree more. One of the reasons why I love Cicero so much, just as a character, is the amount of depth and nuance he has. You really need to analyze him closely to piece him together, and even then there's still so much that remains up for speculation. He is so much more intelligent than he lets on, and he is certainly not afraid to lie to get his way or keep up appearances (a minor example is when the player sees him in the Falkreath sanctuary for the first time and he says that it's the last sanctuary in Skyrim, meanwhile he knows full well about Dawnstar).
I love him 🥹 I could write essays about him honestly
Got it
Cicero fanart?? Yes, please. You're welcome.

I've been going through my first Skyrim playthrough and I've been exploiting the fact that Mercer will follow you anywhere once you've initiated the quest to find Karliah by taking him on all my adventures (he does, in fact, fast travel with you) and I have never felt more inclined to consider any video game NPC my husband.
just wanted to update this and say that Mercer Frey and I are long divorced and I'm married to Cicero now
