Nico, i must apologize,,, i lied,, technically,, i first found out about Harlan Ellison years ago when i was much younger, not through ihnmaims or any of his many interviews, i first found out about him through Netflix. how?? you might ask??? Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated.
i didn’t even know or remembered i watched it, until i got told he was on the show and went to check on my Netflix profile to see it. then saw i apparently already watched the episode years ago, and so i rewatched it for the first time since elementary and remembered everything. oh yeah he’s the grumpy guy from that one episode who my fav Daphne likes 😭
so in other words Harlan Ellison has made me believe in the idea of hauntings!! (i’m joking of course,,, only a little,,)
ive had times where i really liked something, then went back and realized i already knew of it/liked it years ago, and never remembered it and thought i just discovered it, too. happened to me with music especially. (narc by interpol…)
ive never been a Scooby Doo fan, but i do know a lot of people like Harlan’s appearance and that version of the show in general. fun fact: Harlan didnt even like Scooby Doo 😭 in “On The Road” Vol 5, he mentions that he named HP Lovecraft’s character (Hatecraft), but that he thinks Scooby Doo is “moronic.” he said he was more of a Ren and Stimpy kind of guy. shit makes me laugh considering they were promoting his episode on the pavilion and theres the photo of him watching it with Susan.
i like Velma, though. i almost cosplayed her once in highschool, my friend was going to be Daphne. but unfortunately, covid happened. i also like Marcie Fleach, because she also has a similar look to me and i relate to her character.
oh god. considering Harlan read so much and had like, quarter to half a million books in his home.. its one of those things where it seems like a mountain, doesnt it? of all the books he ever read, jesus, what were his favorites? can i list a bunch or is it too much to even know?
but then i realized its kinda easy to find some of these after all. good going, Nico. and good question, Spade.
some writers Harlan loved: Gerald Kersh (his favorite), Franz Kafka, Kate Wilhelm, Robert Silverberg, Donald Westlake, Cordwainer Smith, Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Alan Moore, Dorothy Parker, Theodore Sturgeon, A.E. Van Vogt, Jorge Borges… i could go on and on with those…
people on facebook have collected times Harlan gave positive reviews & recommendations, so i can share some of those with you (part 2 maybe sometime?):
“Doctor Rat” by William Kotzwinkle, “The Far Arena” by Richard Ben Sapir, “Thorns” by Robert Silverberg, “The Time Stream” by John Taine, “Fade” by Robert Cormier, “The Demolished Man” by Alfred Bester, “Dimension of Miracles” by Robert Shecklev, “The Mountain Made of Light, Fire and Ice” and “The Summit” (trilogy) by Edward Myers, “Song of Kali” by Dan Simmons, “The Green Mile” by Stephen King, “The Humanoids” by Jack Williamson, “The Long Afternoon of Earth” by Brian Aldiss ….

I had a library of books, oh, thousands of books [...] and when folks would come to visit, folks who don't snuggle with books, they'd always ask the same dumb question. [...] 'Have you read all these books?' [...] And it came to annoy me more than a little bit. Till I finally figured out the right answer.
Who wants library full of books you've already read?
an extremely long info post on the marriages of Harlan Ellison.
most people assume that Harlan divorced 4 times because he was an ass. and while that may be true that Harlan had problems, he was also a victim of cheating and domestic violence, which i think is important to mention. of course, you should come to your own conclusion on these relationships.
(Harlan with his mother and his second wife, Billie.)
1. Charlotte Stein (m. 1956, d. 1960)
Harlan got married for the first time at the age of 21, partially because he felt that he had to. He met Charlotte at a dinner he attended with a friend. according to Harlan, Charlotte was a bit resentful and jealous of him due to his success with writing (she wanted some of that for herself.) after he was drafted in the military, Harlan came home with a bouquet of flowers just to find Charlotte in bed with another man, and apparently… he beat the hell out of him. even after this affair, Harlan chose to stay with her.
Charlotte proceeded to cheat on Harlan again at a public convention and everyone knew about it. when Harlan’s mother became ill, he left to visit her. when he came back, Charlotte had emptied the entire house and taken everything. a year a half later, she asked him to be with her again. and for some reason, Harlan agreed. at some point.. the two finally divorced.
Harlan says that Charlotte was secretly in love with her father. after her father’s death, she had a mental break and was sent to an asylum. Charlotte’s mother called Harlan and told him that Charlotte would sit in the asylum and tell people she had to “be quiet” because “Harlan is writing.” this later became the inspiration for Gorrister’s backstory in the IHNMAIMS game.
2. Billie Sanders (m. 1960, d. 1963)
Billie was Harlan’s second wife and, unfortunately, his rebound marriage as he was still grappling with his divorce from Charlotte. they met through a publisher. Billie had a 13 year old son named Kenny that Harlan acted as a sort of stepfather to. this relationship was actually nice; Harlan describes Billie as a wonderful woman. but eventually, he realized he was not deeply in love with her, and he saw her as more of a close friend.
some accounts here are a little messy. i remember one instance in which Harlan wrote/implied that he may have gotten into old relationships in order to force Billie to divorce him. older Harlan in “A Lit Fuse” swears that he never cheated at all, and that his sister Beverly had misinterpreted something and told Billie that he did. either way, Harlan wanted to divorce her and so, Billie told him to “take her somewhere warm” first. they moved to california. from then on, Harlan helped Billie financially even after they divorced.
3. Loretta Patrick (m. 1966, d. 1966)
Loretta was already married when Harlan saw her for the first time. just at first sight, he told his friends “i’m going to marry that woman.” she ended up single very quickly, and Harlan immediately got together with her. of course, they got married. this relationship ended up going off the rails pretty fast. Loretta once put up a giant crucifix in Harlan’s bedroom, and when he asked what the hell it was, she replied “it’s our lord.”
Harlan caught wind of Loretta potentially flirting with other men. because of that, he did not want to leave her alone, and demanded she come with him to the WGA where he would be getting an award. this caused an argument, and while Harlan was getting ready, Loretta stormed into the room and beat Harlan with her large hairbrush. this caused him to pass out (quite literally from a wound on his head), and he had to go to the emergency room. obviously, he immediately divorced her.
Loretta wanted half of everything in Harlan’s name. it was soon revealed that she had been married 7 times in the past 2 years, and had regularly conned men out of their money. luckily, the judge did not grant Loretta her wishes. he gave her 10 dollars for every day she was married to Harlan, aka, 450 dollars. Loretta later married Dean Jones.
4. Anna Lori Horowitz (m. 1976, d. 1976)
Harlan’s most controversial marriage. Lori was only 19 when she got married to Harlan, who was 41. the two met when Harlan was speaking at her college. she did not previously know who he was but decided to speak to him after his lecture. they went out for lunch and Harlan, who said he usually did not have any interest in young people, immediately liked her. she was looking for work, so Harlan had her come work for him.
very quickly, Lori began living with Harlan, and eventually they were married. at the time, Harlan believed it was the only time he had ever truly been in love. they had a lot of fun in the beginning and they did as many things as possible, travelling together. eventually, Harlan’s writing deadlines caught up with him and he had to pull back from trips. Lori was then often away from home with suspicious reasoning and Harlan found out quickly that she was cheating.
he did not immediately leave Lori. in fact, he gave her another chance and once even offered that the two have an open relationship to a certain extent, if she really needed that. but Lori shot it down and admitted that she was just not mature enough to handle anything serious with him after all, and she wanted to discover herself.
Harlan said afterwards that he regretted the marriage and should not have done it, that it was “a stupid decision” on his part. Harlan’s mother died that same year, and he considered it one of the worst years of his life.
5. Susan Toth (m. 1986, to his death, 2018)
Susan needs no introduction, but i figure ill tell you some information. Susan and Harlan met in glasgow, scotland, as Harlan was the guest of honor at a convention. apparently, he said something rude to her and she threw books at him in response. according to Harlan, it was then love at first sight. Susan was 25, Harlan was 51.
the two stayed together after having dinner, in their hotel, where “clair de lune” played on loop as they slept or went about their day. when Harlan left scotland, Susan was already coming with him to live with him in california. they were married a year later and had a very private and casual wedding.
Susan remained married to Harlan for the rest of his life. some facts about her: she was a writer herself, she wrote columns and also for kids shows! she had physical health issues and needed surgery for problems with her spine. everyone absolutely adored Susan’s british accent, especially Harlan. she was described as kind and polite but extremely witty and just as clever as Harlan was. she was said to be able to keep up with him perfectly and was not afraid to be firm with him, which he liked.
Harlan died in 2018, and Susan admitted that it was hard to understand who she was without him, because she had dedicated her life to Harlan and his work. she had been okay being in his shadow, but now, she didnt know what to do. Susan was meant to lead Harlan’s estate, but unfortunately, she suddenly passed away in 2020, only 2 years after Harlan. they had both died from the same exact cause: a heart attack.
it makes me sad to say, but Susan may have died from a broken heart without him.
yeah, i got no problem with that. im a yumeshipper/selfshipper myself, though not with AM. (i do however have my own evil ass f/o.) ive seen some people act like selfshipping with AM makes no sense but its all about who YOU like. YOU are the selfshipper.
i do prefer when people actually portray AM in character, though. its more fun and interesting to me to see selfshippers who love AM when he doesnt/cant truly reciprocate. theres so many interesting dynamics there. canon complex AM too, over human AM. thats really fun.

do you think Harlan Ellison had a favorite color??
i cant recall a time that he stated a favorite color. i wonder if i can ever find some smaller info like that. someone in my server asked this the other day too, and someone replied that they associate him with reds and oranges.
its gotta be some kind of red/orange/yellow.
i notice that a lot in his cover art, or house decor, or whatever else.. fashion especially.. those warm colors. he probably loved the use of so many different colors when it comes to fashion and decor, but i associate him with those warm tones. his house was named after mars, and its got that kinda rusty, marsian outside with a warm colored inside.
(off topic, but him liking mars made me think of his ruling planet as a gemini - mercury - and how its the smallest planet if you dont count pluto. how perfect for you, Harlan. gemini is associated with yellow too, right?)
something about him and oranges… reds, yellows, maybe tans or reddish browns… variations…
Harlan Ellison fans opening a book of his and reading the dust jacket only to find a fake story of him living at their exact same state at their exact same home address with someone who has their full legal name. (the book with the same dust jacket story has sold thousands of copies and has been translated into different languages)
i dont even know what to say for this post because ive been awake for 21 hours straight but i said i would type one out so i am.
today is may 27, which means it would be Harlan Ellison’s 92nd birthday. its hard to believe that in less than a decade, he will have been born 100 years ago.
becoming a fan of Harlan drastically helped my life a lot. when i discovered his work, i had been stuck in some unhealthy mental state for years. i was focused on interests that did not benefit me, and i have always been the opitome of what Harlan discouraged: a lazy person with no motivation, someone stuck to a screen, obsessed with the internet, not reading as much as i should.
it felt like, over the past few years, Harlan picked me up by the collar and shook me and lectured me and told me to get my shit together and get away from things that aren’t beneficial to me. i started to read again and even though its not anywhere near perfect, ive still come a long way with self improvement and staying away from shit that keeps me down.
i wish Harlan had experienced peace earlier in his life, and it’s unfair that it came so late for him. i know that wherever he is out there, he probably regrets a lot of things from life. but i hope he understands that hes doing good now, and part of that is helping me and other people like me.
forgive me if im a melancholy little loser today. ill be listening to a lot of clair de lune this week. probably. or something. i dunno.

please, everyone wish Harlan Ellison a happy 92nd birthday!
(coincidentally, he has the same birthday as my grandfather that i never met. if thats worth noting. lol)
i’ve always seen a few people talk about the movies Harlan Ellison has liked throughout the years, do you have a list of some of the movies he’s liked a lot??
Harlan once wrote down a HUGE list of movie recommendations on the pavilion in response to someone. i kept it in my notes in case anyone ever asked for them. uh.. this is going to be very long guys. but its his fault he doesn’t shut up, not mine. this isnt extensive, there’s definitely so many movies Harlan liked that aren’t here. but its a lot so it works as a good answer.
