Why Do People in our Society Want to Be Miserable?
What is it with misery that gets Americans all excited?Ā āYou have to have an adult job.āĀ āYou have to provide for your family.āĀ āYou canāt be doing this part time job crap.āĀ
Everyone spends Christmas and New Years with their families, only to complain about theĀ āshittyā time they had there. Why canāt people be more positive?Ā
Iām always getting in arguments with people about myĀ ālack of a big girl job.ā It doesnāt have benefits, itās not 40+ hours a week, it doesnāt have retirement options. That must translate to just a shitty ass job.Ā
Whatās wrong with having a job that fulfills me? I work 36 hours a week, which is not quite full time work. I have Christmas vacation, spring break, summer break. My futureĀ āMr.ā describes that as a childās job.Ā
In one aspect heās right, Iām notĀ āpullingā my weight in the relationship because Iām not working as many hours and I donāt get paid vacations. In another sense, Iāve never been happier. Itās fulfilling working with kids. I enjoy my vacations to get to spend time with my family and friends.Ā
Our arguments make me miserable though. It often ends with me crying and getting upset. I have an advanced degree, and to him that means Iām notĀ āpulling my weightā because I should be having some fancy ass job making six figures at a job I hate.Ā
Alright, so he doesnāt sayĀ āget a job that you hate.ā But I do hate it. I hate corporate America. I hate this need for greed. This need to buy yourself a six series BMW because goddammit youāve worked hard for it.Ā
Well good for you...take your BMW, Mercedes, super fancy car and show it off, youāve worked hard for it. But leave me the FUCK alone while youāre at it. Donāt look down on me because Iām fulfilled by reading, learning new things and helping people in the America.Ā
Yes, shit on me for feeling the way I do about society. I canāt help to feel the way I do about life. Weāre all raised different ways. Some people are mostly happy and some people are mostly miserable.Ā
I canāt stand thisĀ āAmericanā way of working hard for stuff though. I have a place to live, I have a car that gets me from point A to point B, why does it have to be about more? Why is everyone always calling me a child or a gypsy or whatever?Ā
I guess thatās the #Millennial way right? To most, itās usĀ ārunningā away from our responsibilities. To me, itās looking at the world in a different light. Iām sorry if Iām the disappointment in your life who didnāt live up to their full potential. To me, itās just me learning to love and live my life.Ā
To me, I feel like a hard worker. I put my heart and soul into everything I do. I may not make 100 grand, but does that really mean you should look down on me? Does that really mean that youāre the success and Iām the failure because I could give two shits about the way America is obsessed withĀ ākeeping up with the Joneses?āĀ
Iām just tired. Tired of this war on Millennials and how weāreĀ āselfishā and weĀ āonly care about ourselves.ā Blah, Blah, Blah. Fuck you! Iām sorry Iām interested in helping kids learn how to read. Iām sorry Iām more interested in exploring this great, big world we were created in than figuring out a way to cure cancer. Sure, curing cancer is #amazing and I swear Iām not being sarcastic. But Iām not sure I want to live until Iām 90. Youāre 90! Iām sure youāve most likely seen enough of the world by then.Ā
I just want to live a happy life. I feel like Iāve spent most of my life being miserable that Iām okay with spending life being happy now. Iām almost 30 and by most peopleās standards Iāve accomplished nothing. Iām a failure to society, Iām selfish (supposedly) and I only care about myself.Ā
Iām okay with my (future) kids going to a state university, or whatever university is cheapest. Iām okay with themĀ āworkingā for things that they want like a tablet, or ipod or whatever. I plan to shower them with the love and affection that I never got as a child. Sure I got all the toys/stuff my heart could want, but I could never mutter anĀ āI Love youā to my parents.Ā
Thatās tough for a child. So Iām okay with my child not having the bestĀ āsneakersā or the bestĀ ācellphoneā or not having every single toy they wanted on Christmas. I think that builds character. Not being able to pay the rent? Thatās not cool, but not getting your barbie dream house that youāll probably give two shits about in a month, Iām not so worried about that.Ā
I think Iām a good person. A Millennial who likes to think too much and who isnāt too democratic or too republican. Probably a Millennial who thinks we need a new political party because America is shit right now. A Millennial who doesnāt know it all, who doesnāt have all the answers, but is willing to learn.Ā
I hate people who think they know it all, I hate people who think theyāre better than everyone else. I say I hate them, but I just donāt understand them. If theyād talk to me, Iād surely listen.Ā
Until next time Millennials, itās 2016 and I wish for more Millennials posting on this blog. I hope thatās the case soon.Ā
