Spring of last year, Midgar.
Genesis looks up as Raven leaves the bathroom with wet hair, wearing shorts and a tank top. He’s sprawled out on his couch, having been reading LOVELESS up until now. At the sight of his girlfriend, he puts the book down on the coffee table and straightens up a bit to make space for her.
“Had a nice shower, my love?” he asks, smiling fondly as she sits down on the other side of the couch, putting her feet into his lap. She lets out a deep breath, relaxing against the soft cushions. “You bet I did. I forgot how good showers could feel when the water temperature and pressure are actually decent.” Genesis lets out a soft laugh at her answer, taking one of her feet in his hands to rub it lovingly. He cocks his head to the side, still smiling at her. “You’re right about that. Those cheap, terrible showers in Wutai were definitely not for the weak.” Raven gives him an incredulous look, playfully shoving her free foot into Genesis’ chest. “Oh, stop acting like that. You were the reason the rest of us couldn’t enjoy proper showers.”
Genesis catches her foot by the ankle only after it already made contact with his chest, now holding both of her ankles firmly in his hands. She tries to wiggle them free, but he doesn’t let up so easily. He squeezes them firmly and narrows his eyes at her, feigning offense: “Now you’re blaming me for those budget showers? What did I do to you?”
“For one, you always had to be the first person to take a shower, and you still had to follow through with your extensive beauty regimen, so you used at least the same amount of water as Sephiroth, Angeal and I did collectively, if not more. Because of that, you used most of the hot water, forcing the rest of us to take lukewarm, medium pressure showers if we were lucky. The last to take a shower usually got to take an ice cold shower with such low water pressure that it could barely rinse all the shampoo off their head,” Raven explains, watching as Genesis just rolls his eyes and scoffs at her: “You can’t expect me to not take care of myself. Personal hygiene and grooming are important.”
“They usually are, but they become quite irrelevant when your main concern is survival, which is usually the case in war. You knew that when you signed up.”
“I knew that most people tick like that, but I’m not like most people. I would rather die with a pretty face and soft, clear, velvet skin than survive looking filthy and greasy.”
Raven lets out a little chuckle, aware that Genesis is starting to get riled up. She finally manages to free her feet, putting one of them on the coffee table while propping her other foot on the couch, her leg bent. “Then what are all those blackheads on your nose about? Or the pimples on your cheeks?”
Genesis pouts and crosses his arms, letting out an annoyed huff before he raises his voice a bit: “I just spent months practically living in mud! No wonder my pores are clogged!”
“So if the mud clogged your pores and gave you blemishes, why do you use mud to try and fix it?”
“Because the mud masks I use are specially designed for skin and isn’t full of germs like the mud you find out in nature!”
“Mud masks are still natural products, not artificial.”
Genesis huffs again, looking away from Raven in silence. She keeps staring at him expectantly as he thinks of how to respond. After a few seconds, he uncrosses his arms and looks at her again. He leans in towards her, speaking in a low voice: “You are one deceitful, stunning woman. Those soft cheeks,” he cups her face and traces her features as he praises them, “and those beautiful, full lips that are softer than silk…” He trails off, his hand moving down to her collarbone.
“Then there’s these divine curves,” his other hand joins the loving motions on her other side for a second before he moves both of them down the sides of her ribcage, stopping at her waist to give it a firm squeeze.
“That gorgeous chest that narrows down into that tiny waist,” his hands continue to make their way down over her hips, “only for your silhouette to broaden again as we get closer to those perfect, wide hips that could make any man with eyes lose his mind.” He moves his hands down to her open thighs, rubbing up and down as he looks straight at her.
“You have the body of a goddess. A goddess of femininity and fertility that man would worship for milennia to come, until the end of time. You look like the definition of woman, but then you spread your legs and argue like a man.” Genesis stops his worshipping touches, getting up from the couch to head to the kitchen as he continues: “If it weren’t for your divinely feminine face and body, I would probably feel like I’m dating a man, not a woman.”
“Oh yeah?” Raven turns her head to follow Genesis with her gaze as he pours himself a glass of water. “Excuse me for being the masculine one in my relationship when I’m basically dating a princess.”
Genesis gasps and puts the glass back down before he can even take a sip, storming back over to the couch. “I beg your finest pardon?!”
To provoke Genesis even more, Raven goes on in a dramatic, high-pitched voice, acting like a damsel in distress to mock her partner: “Oh no, I touched mud! A-and I can’t do my 20 step skincare routine, only my 13 step routine! I can’t even sleep in my king-sized bed with a bunch of pillows and satin bedsheets! Instead I only have an air mattress and sleeping bag!” She keeps going, now making it sound like she’s close to crying: “Ah! There’s insects too! Does anyone have bug spray? Please, somebody help me! I’m seriously going to die if someone doesn’t get these flies and that speck of mud away from me!”
Once she’s finally done, she looks up at Genesis, who’s standing there with his mouth agape in shock, completely dumbfounded. When she realizes that he’s too stunned to speak, she explains: “That’s literally how you sound all the time. Don’t act so surprised.”
Genesis eventually recovers from his shock, quickly going back into his argument mindset. He points his finger at Raven, leaning down just a little bit as he mutters almost threateningly: “Watch your mouth, young lady. I’m older and bigger than you.” Raven just chuckles as a smirk spreads on her face, enjoying this way too much. “Hasn’t stopped me from whooping your ass before, has it? Besides, I’m your colonel, I can put you on latrine duty whenever I want to for as long as I want to.”
Genesis scoffs and shakes his head, putting both hands on his hips. He bites his lower lip for a moment before he—
“And BOOM!!! I kicked that monster’s butt and saved the little girl!” Raven is suddenly pulled out of her thoughts at the unmistakable sound of Zack’s loud exclaim, opening her eyes to see the second class SOLDIER squatting in the middle of the helicopter. The two troopers he’s been talking to look at each other, communicating their thoughts with just a single look. Raven hears Sephiroth sigh next to her as Zack grunts with each squat, sharing her annoyance. Angeal and Lazard are the only ones who seem unbothered by his antics, which Raven can’t understand at all.
“Can you shut up and sit your ass down? Some of us are trying to relax,” she orders, which makes Zack slow down. He stands up and turns around to look at her, giving her a sad, almost hurt look. “Uh, I’m sorry…” he mutters as he walks over to Angeal, sitting down next to him. His shoulders slump and he crosses his arms over his chest, letting out a defeated huff. Angeal shoots Raven a sharp look, subtly shaking his head at her. She chooses to ignore him, instead speaking up again: “Save your energy for the mission, kid,” to which Zack responds with a quiet “Yes ma’am”.
The rest of the flight to Wutai remains more or less quiet, only interrupted by the occasional chatter. Zack can’t help but notice how similar Raven and Sephiroth are, from their faces all the way down to how they’re sitting; both of them have their arms crossed, one leg thrown over the other. He can’t help but wonder whether the two are related, considering their similar appearances and mannerisms. On the other hand, the two of them are always referred to as good best friends, and he figures that word definitely would’ve spread if they were actually related. He decides against asking for now, seeing as Raven appears to be sleeping, her head lulled gently against Sephiroth’s shoulder.
Despite her outburst, Zack can’t help but look at Raven. In the moonlight, he notices the scars on her face, especially the one on her cheek. To him, she’s a bit of a mystery; all he’s ever heard about her from Angeal has been positive, that she’s one of the best friends anyone could ever imagine. And yet, she was dry and short-spoken when he tried talking to her before and in the beginning of the flight, having given up after her replies have been mostly monosyllabic. Her face is youthful, yet she has the scars of an experienced warrior and multiple strands of silver in her hair that would suggest she’s a lot older than she looks. And then there’s the fact that she’s known for not being super fond of social interaction or PDA, but now she’s openly sleeping against Sephiroth’s shoulder. The sight almost makes him a little jealous, knowing that he tried his best to win her over, only for her to be all dry and then snap at him, while Sephiroth hasn’t even exchanged a single word with her since they’d stepped on the helicopter and she’s clearly really comfortable around him. Enough to allow herself to sleep on his shoulder. His train of thought suddenly gets interrupted as Raven shifts slightly, which is when he decides to tear his eyes away from her before she catches him staring.
