The Velvet Revolution, November 1987

27 years ago the entire Presidium of the Czechoslovak Communist Party resigned, the culmination of what became known as The Velvet Revolution. Pictures show scenes from the half a million demonstrators that gathered nightly in Wenceslas Square, the moment the Presidium resigned and Vaclav Havel and Alexander Dubcek embraced at hearing the news. Partying and celebrations in Wenceslas Square at the realisation the the Communist era was over.

In 1994 I photographed a young fresh faced 28 year old PR man and had no idea what the impact on Britain, Europe and the world this man would have.

We saw efforts to detoxify the Tory brand with stunts with huskies, hoodies and determination to “stop banging on about Europe.” But it didn’t last. He chose to brake with the long held cooperation with the European People’s Party group allied the Conservative MEPs with the far right Eurosceptic parties.

After his election in 2010 he peddled the lie that Labour had crashed the economy and heralded an era of austerity that ripped the heart out of the most deserving and left those who caused the crash free to continue unabated. The lie that we had the strongest economy in Europe denied the fact that there was little benefit to the majority. Policies contributed the exponential rise in property prices and a rampant explosion of unregulated rentals. Social housing was all but eliminated and the public sector privatised guaranteeing mushrooming profits that went offshore at the taxpayers’ expense.

Pandering to the right wing xenophobic elements in the Conservative Party he called the referendum on Europe unleashing the most divisive campaign this country has known. We now will have to live with the consequences of the result of this referendum for generations to come. We have the chance to get rid of this government at the ballot box, but the consequences that will have been unleashed upon the people of these islands and Europe as a whole will be with us for a very long time.

Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, advocacy and partnerships with local health care organizations. For three weeks, the Orbis DC10 sits on the runway at Yangon Airport, and each day five patients will have been treated for cataracts, glaucoma, and some will even receive cornea transplants. For a period prior to the arrival of the plane, local doctors will be screening a wide range of people to be examined by the plane's doctors, who will then make the final decision on who will be operated upon. Those chosen are selected on the basis of the value that the procedure will have in training local doctors in techniques that will be of benefit to them, as well as  being of clinical advantage to the patients. All patients selected will be poor.
