My regular followers, who know I am a retired psychologist, frequently ask me if I think certain blogs are “real.”  My usual initial reply is “what difference does it make?”  Tumblr is primarily a form of entertainment like Netflix or a movie.  I do think most, like my own, are a combination of reality and fantasy.  It’s just a different ratio for different blogs.  Some appear to be 99% true, while others appear to be 99% false (like most Fin Dom sites which look more like scams to me).  For me, what I tell you about myself and my past experiences is true, but I don’t tell you everything.

It was pointed out to me by a colleague that blogs have given a visual presence to day dreams.  We all fantasize about sexual relationships with people who wouldn’t give us the time of day, or about being wealthy, or about being a sports star.  Blogs allow us to give our fantasies a home.

At the end of the day we are all just trying to get by, financially, emotionally and sexually.  Truth can be subjective anyway.  I recall a American Lit professor saying that while To Kill a Mockingbird is a work of fiction, it tells us a truth about the deep south in the 1930′s.
