     IT ISN’T WRONG TO SAY

               he’s never tried, but he feels like he’s been called out on some fault of his, like somehow it’s wrong for him to have never spiked his hair, rebelled against “the man.” It’s always been easier for him to live a life of compliance, and usually, the two don’t intersect.

               ❝ I mean — well — ❞ Now is probably the only time compliance and spontaneity will be one in the same. At least, for a long time. Shinji swallows his words. ❝ Alright. But — where do you want to go? ❞

     "HQ STUFF” SOUNDS

               important to Shinji, but he tries not to worry himself over it. If it were important to him, he’d know about it, and if it were important to Mari – well, she’d be there. So he holds onto this opportunity to not be by himself on the school rooftop for as long as it will last him.

               Perhaps her questions are to be humorous, but even as a joke, he finds the notion of being rebellious in that way too far-fetched. His expression twists a little, into something not exactly amused, but not disgusted, either; understanding, but uncertain.

               ❝ I couldn’t live like that, ❞ he concedes. ❝ Maybe you could, but…I don’t know. I guess it’s not really my idea of fun. ❞

hq stuff in general is never important to mari – important to everyone else, sure. but not to mari. she’s here for a good time, not a long time; or that’s what she used to tell herself, anyway. they’ll find ways to work around her sporadic schedule because it’s not like that’s ever stopped them before.

     STRANGELY, SOMEHOW,

               all of this is reassuring to him. Even with Mari’s bantering way of talking about it, it seems like she’s understood him. And not many do, when he tries to express these sentiments — it’s why he doesn’t talk about them with a lot of people. For a beat, Shinji hesitates, and then he makes an attempt at returning her smile.

               ❝ I guess we did, ❞ he agrees. He pauses for another moment, like the words won’t  quite come together in sentences in his head. ❝ I’m glad. Not a lot of people really understand it. But I — didn’t keep you from anything important, did I? ❞

she considers his hesitance to be pitiful, but not in an unkind way. “some people stay so far in themselves that it makes understanding others hard.” she shrugs, stealing a glance at him. “they have to help themselves out before they can help you. like on planes.”

                    she laughed.  ❝ there’s no way you didn’t get that from me. dirky and rose are too uptight to even think of jokin’ like that. ❞ she held the pants out to him, still giggling to herself.

     ❝ IT’S NOT LIKE THAT!

               Not really, at least… ❞ Shinji withdraws into himself a little shamefully, knowing that he’s come across that way. Even if Mari’s kidding ( sometimes it’s impossible to tell with her ), it still isn’t what he meant. ❝ It’s not that I…like being insignificant…it’s more like I like the feeling of not having to worry. If I can think of my life as something small, then it’s not as bad if people don’t care about it. I guess. I’m not sure how to explain it. ❞

               He remembers how she said not to put that kind of a spin on things, and the regret creeps up on him. ❝ But, that’s probably not what you were talking about at all…was it? ❞

mari absentmindedly curls one of her pigtails around her finger, sighing against the heat of japan. there must be something in the air that makes everyone around her so insecure within themselves. that’s the only thing that can explain it. “yeah, yeah. i get it. i know one too many people who think the same –– just don’t take it too far, eh?” mari smiles playfully, even though the sentiment is anything but.

                    ❝ reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaal mature, davey. you want these pants or nah ??  ❞ in her infinite maturity, she sticks her tongue out, and holds the pants further away.

               she grins and leans her weight against the door, holding the pajama pants juuuust out of reach of grasping hands, especially those behind doors.
