This whole mess I that I got myself into... he followed orders. Shinji rarely refused to do what people asked him to do. It makes things easier for him, but Misato rarely found that to be the case. He followed orders and all it did was bring him pain, agony, and more self-hatred. He still did it, and in doing so he saved them all. 

The mess wasn’t his. It was Nerv’s, her’s, his fathers. He’d been let down by too many people. She had to do better by him. He was all the family she had. 

She reached a hesitant hand over towards his. Afraid of being rebuffed.
