What Are Motor Tics?
Broad definition: involuntary, spasm-like bodily, occular (eyes), facial, shoulder, neck, and head movements.
Types/Classifications of motor tics:
1) Simple Motor Tics- they can be clonic (isolated, single movements) like blinking, nose-flaring, and eye movement. They can also be dystonic (slow, temporarily sustained pulling, twisting, or stretching movement) such as arm thrusting, mouth gaping, and sidewards eye movements.
2) Complex Motor Tics- these have nearly the same definition but look closer at the differences! Clonic complex motor tics (acts that are not purposeful, but appear purposeful) can look like head jerking, touching oneself/others, grabbing objects, and spitting, to name a few. Dystonic complex motor tics (movements not appearing purposeful) can look like head-shaking, bending over, knee-dropping, series of facial twitches, etc.,.
its disability awareness month so lets get fuckin real about tourettes and tic disorders bc some people STILL don’t get it
Dispelling some myths
NO you can’t ‘catch tics’ from watching tiktok videos.
NO anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and Autism do not cause tics, HOWEVER, they are extremely common in people with TS/tic disorders and up to 90% have them as comorbidities.
NO ticcing in your sleep is not a sign of epilepsy.
NO CBD/THC are not magical cures.
NO not everyone with tics has tourettes. Tic disorders are there own seperate diagnoses from tourettes and many other neurologic disorders (and things like degenerative diseases, brain injuries, and enviromental toxin exposure) have tics or tic-like movements.
and finally
PEOPLE WITH TICS DO NOT TIC 24/7
FAQS
Do you tic during sex????!?!?!
First- stop asking strangers this, you’re CREEPY. Second, normally no, tics tend to lessen while ‘distracted’.
Isn’t Tourettes just swearing?
Nope! It includes motor movements, other vocalizations, many comorbid mental health disorders, and phenomenon like tic attacks and uncomfortable urges before tics. Coprolalia and copropraxia (the swearing and inappropriate gestures) actually only appear in ~10% of TS patients.
Do tics hurt?
Technically, the sensation of ticcing is just uncomfortable. However if the ticcing invovles self-hitting or anything that would normally be considered self-injurious, or the tic repeatedly happens and strains a muscle, then yes, it hurts.
Can I laugh?
This depends on the person. Some people are okay with it at anytime, others only if they’re laughing first, and for me- its okay as long as its not a tic where I’m hurting myself or something and othertimes, I want my tics ignored completely no matter how ‘funny’.
Is there a cure?
No. There are therapies and medications to help manage symptoms but there is no one ‘cure’ for tic disorders or tourettes syndrome.

trash post from my phone but i CANNOT believe that some people still believe tics are controllable. Just saw a post on a disability subreddit where someone was asking for advice because their tics offended a coworker. The comments were all saying things about how this person shouldnt have sexually explicit tics and needs to get therapy and medication immediately. Telling them that they have to be able to do the job (which was not even what the post was about???). Telling them that since they didn’t have ADA accommodations in place, they’re stigmatizing tics. WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE HELL?
Tourettes is INVOLUNTARY. We CANNOT control it. We can try to hold it in or redirect it but its like trying not to cough when youre sick. Damn near impossible, and leaves you crying. There is NO medication MADE for tics. It is frequently treated with seizure medication, and, fun fact, if you take seizure meds and you Dont have seizures, then you might DEVELOP seizures. I was on a Blood Pressure med for my tourettes and had to stop because it triggered heart issues. Redirection therapy doesnt work for everyone, and for me, still causes tic attacks!
Anyway shout out to all of my tourettic and tic disorder baddies. I love you all, and you’re perfect with or without treatment!! The way your brain works is nothing to apologize for, and other people’s reactions to the things out of your control are NOT your responsibility.
Just a reminder that having tics doesn’t make someone “cute”
Having tics isn’t all “hehe I can’t believe I just said that” or “I’m just so quirky”
They are something that affects the daily life of those living with them, they can be painful and very draining
Shoutout to people who have "annoying" and "uncomfortable for others", type of tics.
Shoutout to people who tend to have a lot of tic attacks.
Shoutout to people with coprolalia, copropraxia, etc.
Shoutout to people with "bad and ugly" tics.
Those who's face get twisted, and looks "ugly"
Those who can't do anything because of their tics.
Those who struggle with walking, eating, etc.
I see you
And I don't think you're a bad person for it, I don't think you're a burden for others, you aren't, you are as valuable as people without tics.
There's a genuine terror for a certain percentage of us with Tourettes that we may be actually KILLED OR ASSAULTED for ticcing in the wrong time and in the wrong place to the wrong person.
People think we're drunk or on drugs or we mean what we say and somehow that gives them the right to abuse us.
What I say as a tic is ALWAYS out of my control, but your reaction is 1000% in YOUR control.
Do better for those of us with neurological illnesses.
Disabled people should be allowed to exist in public. Yes, I mean all disabled people.
That includes people with tic disorders.
That includes people who smell ‘bad’.
That includes people who can’t help being loud.
That includes people who move ‘strangely’.
That includes people with bulky mobility aids.
That includes people who drool.
That includes people who struggle with incontinence.
We all should get to exist, however that looks, and go out in public, use public transport, do activities outside our homes. And we should be allowed to do those things without being glared at or having ableist things said to us.

People with psychotic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with personality disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with substance abuse disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with tic disorders are neurodivergent too.
People with bipolar disorder are neurodivergent too.
People with dissociative disorders are neurodivergent too.
Neurodivergence isn’t just ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression. (Plus those last two also get left out sometimes!) Neurodivergence is anything that affects your brain.
“Neurodivergent people hate loud noises” is actually just as valid as a statement as “neurodivergent people have delusions,” “neurodivergent people have tics,” or even “neurodivergent people have low empathy.”
plurality is like werewolfism. youre standing in walgreens and you look out the window and catch sight of the moon at the wrong angle and the back of your head starts tingling and you're like aw fuck ive gotta get out of here before the Transformation hits
Hello, New Year!
CARD GAMES
ft. amagi hiiro
© tokusaatsus 2022
warnings: none
On the days leading up to his birthday, Hiiro becomes a little more…sullen, though that’s not the word you would use to describe it. Maybe melancholy is a better fit? It hurts you, to see the normally bright leader of Alkaloid so dull and sad, and you can tell Aira feels the same.
That’s why you decide to do something about it.
Coming from a rural village, Hiiro is quite unused to the modern-day world. He’s assimilated well, mostly due to everyone’s combined efforts to teach him more about the world beyond his village. But there are some things ES has that his village doesn’t, and that leaves him out of his depth. This includes–but is not limited to–technology, cuisine and, most importantly, card games.
You think it’s a little funny, how the leader of an idol unit based on a deck of playing cards has never played any card games.
