A Murder is Announced

Jones: So where does that leave us?

Barnaby: Studying country law, Jones, that’s where that leaves us, which dictates not only the behaviour of the animals, but also of the people.

Barnaby: This is Sergeant Troy. And this is a spade. Between them, they are going to dig a hole in your backyard with your permission.

Hollingsworth: Which I don’t give.

Darren: ...and he’s written an editorial about how the police don’t have a clue.

Troy pulls out his warrant card.

Darren: Oh. I see...

DS Noland: Mr Gudgeon would not jeopardize a long and complex operation by spilling the beans to a flatfooted country copper. ... keep your mouth shut and go back to chasing purse-snatchers. I don’t think you’re cut out for the NIS.

Troy: You’re right. I’m not.

(later)

Troy: A document? You mean like, a piece of paper?

DS Noland: Don’t annoy me, Troy.

Troy: Sorry, but you have to spell these things out for us country coppers.

(still later)

Barnaby: As you well can imagine, we’re not used to dealing with such vast sums hereabouts.

DC Backley: Well there’s no need to get stressed, sir. This is an NIS matter now, and we’ll take care of it.

Troy: (about Joyce’s painting) It’s very, um, it’s very... atmospheric.

Barnaby: Who is this?

Joyce: Alan Pinkney.

Barnaby: Why has he got huge whiskers growing out of his ears?

Joyce: They’re paint brushes.

Troy: These trees are very good, Mrs Barnaby.

Barnaby: (about drawings in victim’s house) Not very good either, are they?

Troy: Maybe the murderer was an art-lover, sir.

Troy: ...she was also assaulted, according to Teal.

Barnaby: Will you stop saying that? Did he get the woman’s registration number?

Troy: Gudgeon won’t like us poking around in his evidence, sir.

Major Teal: Surely you’re too young to be a sergeant?

Not actually a Marple, but in the same vein of murder mysteries from England. I stumbled across a photo of young Sam Heughan in an episode of Midsomer Murders and I just had to watch it for myself.

Here, he’s blonde with a British accent. And so young!
