this big guy was in grizzlies west and i literally almost cried when i saw him. how does this game evoke such beauty with these animals that are made of pixels

you can see how much he's trying to justify the situation. the way he speaks and the way he acts almost insane, is probably perceived as dutch just being the antagonist. but he's most definitely just unsure of what to do.

if you watch the video, he speaks as if he's trying to convince himself. he may be talking to arthur and john, but in reality, he's talking to himself. he stumbles over his words and speaks in a manic manner, usually shouting and it's just a display of his insecurity. it's plausible the whole situation scares him. he's never had to deal with such a situation before, and words only get you so far.

the whole history of the gang has been based on dutch's words and his language and you can tell he has no idea what to do when he can't talk himself out of the situation. the constant monologues and the constant reminder that he will get them out of it holds no value in the situation they're in. because there is no action to the words, things start to fall apart and in turn, dutch falls apart as well.

he also isolated himself for hours at multiple points in the day. whereas before he was always standing outside of his tent, observing everyone in an almost "look what i've created" manner. but now he can't bear to look at the other thing he's created - the thing he was proud of now ruined through his actions.

there's also one instance in the video where he argues with john and questions him about the bank job and how the pinkertons showed up so quickly. because he refuses to believe it was a poorly thought-out plan and he refuses to believe that any of it was his fault. the way he talks to arthur as well makes it seem like he's trying to blame anyone but himself because he can't take responsibility; taking responsibility means admitting he killed hosea.

there's another point where he's just sitting in his tent and staring into nothing. over the course of the previous chapters, dutch is always shown with a book in his hand or standing outside his tent. there's never a moment where he just sits alone. it shows how much he's genuinely thinking and I'm surprised the man didn't just break down into tears. he genuinely just looked stressed the whole chapter.
